There are a lot of generalizations being made in this thread, and a lot of them are just not true, at least in most cases. College graduates make a significantly larger amount of money than those with just a G.E.D. or high school diploma, and almost all of the most lucrative professions, such as most types of surgery, require very specialized degrees.

yeah i was about to make that comment- all relevant data points to post-secondary graduates making more than high school ones. also that discrepancy is incredibly pronounced amongst males, i.e. males who have university degrees make a lot more money than males who don't.

Dentists get paid though.

I also plan to be investing money and have companies (atleast one) on the side. I just had this big talk with a teacher of mine, and the guy's a straight baller. Has enough businesses and his house is a mansion. Gave me some good advice on becoming rich.</div>

Pretty much the same with me.

The only conflict I have in terms of career is the fact that all of my teachers have always told me (like EVERY single one of my teachers) that I'm an exceptional writer. However, I'm not sure how far I can get with my writing. I mean, there's literally a million writers out there, and I really don't want to take up journalism for a living.

You and me both, bro'. I think most people on this board have writing ambitions. Hell, we all write about sports on JBB on a regular basis, so why not get free tickets, press passes, and money for it? Thats the common mindset of most guys who are into sports which makes the market really saturated, and the pay, even for some of the best in the profession, isn't half of what a doctor or lawyer would make.

Personally, I decided that it was a dead-end career when I decided to attend Michigan and get an MBA from Ross, but now that I've got the option of going to Medill (top journalism school in the nation @ Northwestern), I'm really rethinking my life and my possible career paths. Basically though, no matter how money other professions may bring to me, I enjoy writing the most, and I ultimately want to have a happy, fulfilling life and career, not one that makes me dread going back to work every Sunday.

I'm getting closer to graduating college now (but it doesn't feel like it yet

), and I'm starting to look for work as a sports writer, sort of test the waters before I'm done with school. I doubt it will happen, but if the right opportunity came along, I could see myself leaving school, at least for awhile. I think a more likely scenario is that I'll finish school, and maybe take on a very part-time job writing for some small paper or magazine on a part time basis. I definitely want to get a job in the industry soon, though, because I'm getting that itch more and more now that I can almost see the end of college.

Personally, I know that I'm growing up and all that, but I don't feel like it in a bad way. I definitely feel like a kid in some ways still, and I think that's good. I was dreading my 22nd birthday like it was going to make me feel like I'm getting old or something, and I know it's only been a couple days, but I feel the same, and that's sort of a relief. It makes me feel at ease knowing that I still have a lot of time to settle on a career and finish college. So yeah, I guess I'm going to see if I can't start moving into a more mature part of my life while also holding on to the fun parts of the late teen/early 20s years.

As far as education is concerned, I want to study Economics at a top ten university and get a degree. After that, I want to get a job in central London as an investment banker for a big firm.

I want to be an Accountant.

Dentists only get paid 60,000-80,000? That sounds really low.

edit: Yeah....

I'm not trying to sound snobby or stuck up, but I thought for sure dentists made even more than what 44 posted.

Since the figure is an average of all American dentists, I'm sure there's some dentists included that really don't make much at all. There's got to be plenty of dentists out there in very rural areas that are lucky to see 10 patients a week and therefore bring the average down.

What do you do if you don't mind me asking?

I've for a while, like most of you here, wanted to become a sports writer. Recently I've researched the career more thoroughly and decided to switch my focus on a career in business. This is my forth year taking accounting, and over the summer I'll be making more money than the normal 17-year old.

I'm setting my goal high, I'm hoping to go to a top business school in two years. Hopefully I can still do some writing on the side, maybe part-time or something like that. For some reason, I just fear getting rejected into every college I apply to

60,000-80,000 is starting that was what i was refering to, anyways im really hoping everything works out and i'll have a nice amount of money saved up by the time im 35-40 and start my own business (if i cant open a clinic then like maybe a resturant or corner store or something)

Hopefully I'll be working for a small company or have opened my own company and be successful. A long term relationship would be nice, too. Mostly I just hope I've found something that makes me happy.

Pre-Med is the way for me! A typical south asian parents dream to see their son be a doctor.

Hopefully be a doctor someday, dont know what kind yet.

<div class="quote_poster">Karma Wrote</div><div class="quote_post">You don't EVER want to get married, or just not until you've satisfied every personal goal?

My deal with my parents is I told them that there's no way I'm getting married until I'm out of University and satisfied with where I am in life. And no way in hell am I doing one of those "go back to the home country and get bombarded with marriage offers" deals either. My friend's brother just went back recently and he got like atleast 10 proposals a day or something (could be an exxaggeration, I'm not sure the exact number but he got a lot). As soon as they hear "Canada", they automatically assume we must be living the high life, with the finest foods and maids and butlers.</div>

True, when they hear "America" or "Canada," they think we're loaded with cash and rich and shiz.
