I don't want to cross that line where I am being a Canzano homer because I'm not but he is good at what he does.

Canzano has won numerous Associated Press Sports Editors (APSE) awards.

In 2010, the Society of Professional Journalists named Canzano the National Sports Columnist of the Year for his work the prior year.

In 2009, Canzano was voted America's No. 1 sports columnist by the APSE, for 2008.

In 2007 and 2008, the Associated Press named Canzano the nation's No. 2 sports columnist among large-circulation newspapers, with Canzano finishing second to the Los Angeles Times’ Bill Plaschke both times.

Canzano was recognized by The Press Club of Atlantic City as national sportswriter of the year in 2004.

In 2013, Canzano won first place in Special Topic Column Writing in the Best of the West contest for his portfolio of columns that included a column on a soldier who died in action in Afghanistan and Canzano's own experience coaching a girls fourth-grade volleyball team with a player who has Down Syndrome.

In 2002, Canzano was named the nation's top investigative sports writer by the Associated Press News Executives Council[10] for his enterprise piece on Carlos Rodriguez, a 21-year-old Dominican basketball star who was masquerading as a 17-year-old high school basketball player.

Canzano is a three-time Oregon Sportswriter of the Year winner.

On July 7, 2007, the Portland Beavers' Triple-A baseball team held "John Canzano Bobblehead Night."Also, on Aug. 29, 2009, the LPGA Safeway Classic featured "John Canzano Bobblehead Day," as part of the tour event held at Pumpkin Ridge Golf Club in Oregon.

I understand that many blazer fans hate Canzano because the blazers hate Canzano but he does do good work.

Okay, buddy. Canzano typically wins those awards with cancer kid stories. They are not based on his entire body of mostly repugnant work. He sends in three articles and they are judged.

He apparently is well liked by people who only read three of his stories a year. Big fucking deal.

Your defense of this goblin has reached a tipping point. Goodbye.

Wow!!! such animosity and hatred. Sorry if I offended you. I try to find the good in everyone.

Yes but these fluff articles were insulting to the intelligence of the fans when you knew that the team was going to suck for next year.

So why do you need confirmation if you already know this? Doesn't make the writer better if he just confirms what you know... it just makes him a person that agrees with you. There's a difference.

He's a tool. He capitalizes on the suffering of others. He wins awards for those ridiculous articles. Don't pretend like the guy cares. I've met him many times. He's a self-indulgent, megalomaniac who thinks his opinion matters more than the sports he's covering.

He's the worst kind of ghoul. He feigns interest in his subjects, and other than one case, he forgets about them after he gets the award. Further works at OSHU. I wonder if he's seen Canzano coming the Doernbecher cancer ward to see if some kid is wearing a Duck shirt recently. It's getting close to award season.

He's got a great gig. Troll the Portland sports' fans, and then play the victim when he's called out for it.

I clicked the link so you all don't have to.

Here is what he said,

Introduced myself to Damian Lillard just now as the Trail Blazers were taking the court for a closed-court walk through. He smiled when he saw me coming. We shook hands.
Taller than I thought he'd be.

Lillard tweeted earlier Wednesday:

Who is John canzano and why do ppl keep mentioning him to me

This in response maybe in part, to my column on Lillard's All-Star pentathlon, which put himself in front of the team. Maybe, too, in part due to my radio rant Wednesday that we chronically overvalue our performances in Portland, and hand out standing ovations as if they were handshakes, Lillard included. Is it possible that Lillard is very good, and an All-Star, but that he still has holes in his game that need to be fixed before he elevates to "great" status?

Lillard is an All-Star, true.

He's carrying the Blazers with LaMarcus Aldridge injured, absolutely.

But also, he's shaky on the defensive end of the court. The other night vs. Denver Lillard shot 8 for 20. Two games ago vs. Utah he was 11 for 28. That's not great. Just ok.

Anyway, either Lillard was being passive aggressive or he really didn't know the name of the columnist/radio host who has stood at his locker, talking with him, asking him questions and interviewing him on radio. Just to be sure, and to put this to rest, I waited on the court before the game vs. Brooklyn tonight, and as the Blazers came out for a closed shoot-around I stood, looked him in the eye, introduced myself, and shook his hand.

Lillard laughed.

I also introduced myself to Terry Stotts and Nic Batum.

No hard feelings?

"Naw, we're alright," said Lillard.

Just alright, see? Not great.

Wow. I don't read the guy, but I'm amazed that someone in the press would put that much focus on themselves. Is he that interesting a personality?

I 100% understand where you are coming from but the Blazers do EXACTLY the same thing. IMO - with out having Canzano in the market, it would be hard to sift out whats correct and incorrect OR getting the other side of the story.

Kerry Eggers managed to be quite critical of the Blazers without inserting himself into the column. Furthermore, he actually used logic and facts to back up his criticisms.

It's like saying only Rush Limbaugh can criticize President Obama. I think Victor Davis Hanson and Walter Russell Mead do a much better job. Why does someone need to be an attention whore to criticize a person or organization?

That's impressive! Obviously John Canzano is too credentialed to be in a backwater like Portland. It will be tough to lose him to a market more befitting his talent, but sometimes you just have to let someone leave who has outgrown your city.

I don't need confirmation of anything but it is nice to hear someone bring attention to some of the fluff material the blazers put out.

Eh. I just downgrade the fluff or don't even listen to it. No one really needs to say it anymore in the information age... we can all (really) come to our own conclusions. At least, I would hope.

I like Canzano, he's part of my Blazer experience. I recognize that other's don't much care for him here. I am not going to defend my opinion of him because I don't need to. We don't need to have 15,000 posts on how bad and evil you think Canzano is considering he's actually done a lot of good. You don't have to like him.

For me, the human interest stuff is separate from the sports. So, with that said, I can say that the good is great, but he just kills it sports wise. And mind you, I don't mind the negative stuff. I do mind, however, when he takes a first person approach to something he is supposed to be a fly on the wall on.

Canzano says "The other night vs. Denver Lillard shot 8 for 20. Two games ago vs. Utah he was 11 for 28. That's not great. Just ok."

Last year, LeBron James had games of 3-11, 4-14, 6-16, 8-20 and 8-22. I heard somewhere that he was the greatest player in the NBA. MVP or something? :dunno:

One of my favorite Canzano moments was during the Oregon/Lyles "scandal." Canzano was on ESPN's Outside the Lines as some sort of insider on the major punishment coming Oregon's way. When he appeared on the screen during his segment, the writing underneath his face identified him as John "Calzano." I still laugh thinking about it.

Another great moment was when Calzano hi-jacked the 2012 Pac-12 media day by continually pestering Chip Kelly about Will Lyles. This was after Chip had answered "I can't discuss it as the NCAA case continues" 4 or 5 times already by other writers. The best part was that Calzano dragged his wife down to LA for media day and made her film him trying to goad Chip into a reaction. The only reaction he got were groans from the other assembled media who were wondering who this douchebag from Oregon was who kept interrupting the press conference.

He's such a choad.

I like how Chad Doing sometimes refers to him as John Cazizno. I think a a caller made that reference to him once.

I bet you're wrong.

Dude, we're commissioners for the Blazers forum. There's no way he would dare kick us out. He kicks us out and the Blazers would never let him attend another blazer game.

just like a troll, he doesn't exactly get his facts right. they have 11 #'s retired, but two of them are mostly ceremonial.

While yes they have too many #'s retired, 9 is the actually # of #'s retired (#1 has been used by players since they honored Weinberg with it, and 77 isn't exactly a common # in the NBA now-a-days anyway).

And even if it was 11, that argument is about 9 years old
