Main Page vs Off Topic Page

Honestly, I don't post much anymore as the political junk commonly makes it over to this side and you never know when you will be ganged up on. I'm not sure it is any different than what is going on in public right now. My specific experience was the "tolerant" left making me feel very unwelcome as I guess tolerance is a one-way street. I miss the good ole days when we just talked basketball. We need more ABMs and less of what is on here now.

BTW, I never go over to off topic so 100% of my experience is what happened on this side.

Whatever happened to ABM anyway? He's the guy that is responsible for bringing a lot of us to this site and has since up and vanished.

Pick you battles, put on a suit of armor and bullet proof vest, say your peace, and do not take any ruffle feathers with you to other threads.

I find the honest exchanges enlightening on several levels. Everyone has something to contribute, no matter the topic. Some people know more than they say, while others say more than they know. Some posts are very clever funny.

The OT forum works because when two posters disagree on one topic, they might agree with each other on the next three. The way a forum should be run.

And the fact that people are fairly respectfully trying to talk about it means there's hope for us! We're Americans, we're problem solvers!!!

I have felt the exact same way. There are some people on the left here who have ripped me a new asshole all because I said something was gay but the left never understands context, they just freak out over everything and even with me believing in gay rights people were calling for me to banned because I said something was gay. A specific referee in fact who wasn't gay but made terrible calls. Oh my bad I called him a SlyPokerDog. these are all words people give power too. Magical words. Then people proceeded to call me a bigot all because I used a magical word when in reality they were being the bigots at that moment. CONTEXT. Learn in people. I know Portland is full of over sensitive snowflakes but come on, not everybody that disagrees with you is a "bigot, racist, homophobic,".

Is ABM Albert from the old official game threads on the Blazers homepage back in the Sarah Hecht days of moderating them? Albert was one of my favorite game thread dudes....

He was "Atlanta Blazer Man" I think is what that stood for, and he posted on OregonLive and Basketball Forums, and I believe when the Laker mods started messing that forum up he and Denny teamed up to get us all here from both of those places.

You called someone a name, then they called you a name, and now you're mad that they called you a name for calling someone else a name?

This reminds me of a bit by Louis C.K. that I find hilarious and spot on.

I called a referee a name, it's not like I called anybody in the forum a name. Logic

It's just a reflection of our society, nobody can agree on anything or have a meaningful conversation, it's all yelling at each other and everybody is always right. The whole idea that if you don't believe what I believe than you are the worst person known to man.
This is what is wrong with so many people today. It's worst when it comes to politics and religion, which is why those are such volatile subjects, but it's seen with people looking down up those who like a different gender, if someone likes weed, if someone doesn't like weed, if someones a "redneck", if someone's a "thug" etc... For whatever reason, a lot of people can't respect others differences in general, even just a difference of opinion. It's bad over in that OT section though, but that's just a reflection of society.

I only like one gender of weed.

Two things I never touch. Facebook, coworkers, whoever.
I get this whole thing. Off topic is where conservatives have a free pass to act as crazy as they want. But, I have met some of those people in real life. They are all good peeps. They just lose sight of responsibility over the Internet. I've met maris before. I took him and his wife to a beautiful beach in Florida. He is a great guy. I might disagree with him about politics, but he is a super nice guy. It is easy to be shitty on the Internet.

If you use the word faggot knowing how it makes gay people feel and don't care you're probably an asshole.

http://www.etymonline.com/index.php?term=faggot

The explanation that male homosexuals were called faggots because they were burned at the stake as punishment is an etymological urban legend. Burning sometimes was a punishment meted out to homosexuals in Christian Europe (on the suggestion of the Biblical fate of Sodom and Gomorrah), but in England, where parliament had made homosexuality a capital offense in 1533, hanging was the method prescribed. Use of faggot in connection with public executions had long been obscure English historical trivia by the time the word began to be used for "male homosexual" in 20th century American slang, whereas the contemptuous slang word for "woman" (in common with the other possible sources or influences listed here) was in active use early 20c., by D.H. Lawrence and James Joyce, among others.

I don't use the word, just thought you should know...

I remember that game thread and I can tell you I wasn't mad at what you said nor the context of what you said. What got to me, and I thought was very childish, was that someone asked you not to say that and you pretty much said "why the hell should I not say that, sorry if it offends you but i'm going to say whatever the hell I want to say so get over being offended by it".
