Matisse Thybulle Signs Full-MLE Offer with Mavericks / Blazers match

Don't match. This dude is barely a rotation player on a good team... giving him over $10m a year seems a dramatic overpay given the contracts that have been handed out this summer in free agency.

Joe can't say that he is trying to build a winner despite Dame's situation AND let Thybulle leave for nothing. Especially for a salary starting at around 10M a year for 3 years.
Well, with Dame gone he shouldn't be. Sharpe should be starting at the 3 (unless they trade Ant), and I want Rupert playing behind him to develop him. Rupert might be my favorite move of Cronin's entire tenure, I think he can be a lockdown defender with some offensive upside and the sooner the Blazers allow him to try and tap into that, the better. Also, the Blazers should have cap space next year and I'm interested in maximizing that, as it'd allow Portland to take a chance on better role players than Thybulle, or at the very least would give them the ability to take on salary for assets without sending anything back.

There's also a chance that the Dame trade generates a $20M-$30M TPE. I hope the Blazers have enough of a buffer below the tax to use that TPE to help other teams at next years trade deadline by taking on contracts in return for assets. That's what smart rebuilding teams do.

I don't think there's much of a chance the Blazers win in the next couple of seasons, so keeping Thybulle isn't all that important to me. If the Blazers feel like they can flip him for assets back, sure, but he barely fetched Philadelphia anything on half the price last season, so I don't see how Portland could get much more than a 2nd round pick or two. I don't think that's worth risking the flexibility and limited Ruperts minutes behind Sharpe. I'd rather find a cheap shooter for the 3rd guard spot (Skylar Mays?) to play limited minutes along with moving Sharpe down to the 2 to open up more minutes for Rupert at the 3.

Still like those undersized lineups

In addition to Rupert, if the return includes Caleb Martin or Ben Simmons his minutes will be even more limited. Add Jaquez jr and Little and someone needs to go. As you alluded to if it was a win-now scenario with Dame you keep Thybulle, but it's not.

Unfornutanaltey we need to make the decision before we know for sure who we get back in return.

Thybulle is only 26 and a legit defensive stopper. So he fits both timelines of going for it now or rebuilding and unless you think it is best to try to outscore teams 129 to 128 every game then he is definitely worth that rumored contract. POR is so allergic to D that I think it is has spread to the fans at this point!

I know some think that Rayan Rupert could have been his replacement and that is true but even best case is Rupert will need a year or two to get adjusted to the NBA style of play and such. Also if Rupert explodes on the scene the contract is tradeable for other assets down the line if needed. I will admit going into this offseason before all those crazy contracts were being handed out I thought he was more of a 6 to 8m per year guy but after the spending spree we saw I guess this is the new NBA in terms of contracts.

Easy decision to start with and a no-brainer at that years/salary.

A really good contract for Portland and Thybulle. If he overperforms, a new contract for him at age 28. If he’s just a plus defender who sets the example for the the team and is okay at corner 3’s, then he earns his 3 years. [AND it’s an absolutely tradable contract alone or in a package. Don’t have those contracts? It’s harder to make deals,]

Thank you, Dallas.

At 201 lbs he is best for defending guards IMO. I can see him playing alongside Ant as part of the 2nd unit.

Do not even joke about Ben Simmons -- I think the Blazers would rather Have Herro then Simmons who is such a lost cause as a player it's not even funny it's borderline sad. I do not get how some fans still think Ben Simmons can still be fixed he is the worst contract in the NBA by a country mile and it's not even close. I would rather have Westbrick from last year and have that deal still have a couple years on it then his deal and I hate Westbrick so that says something.

does this mean we still have our MLE? we matched so we should have full MLE correct?

LOL, I await your future meltdown post then.

So you want Sharpe playing SF? or do you want Herro coming off the bench at SG?
At least Simmons plays a position of need and adds defense.
