DALLAS (Ticker) -- The Dallas Mavericks on Wednesday signed free-agent center DeSagana Diop.

Terms were not disclosed for Diop, who rejoins the Mavs after being traded to the New Jersey Nets in February in the deal that brought Jason Kidd to Dallas.

While he offers size, the 7-foot Diop fails to bring much of anything else to the table. The 7-foot Senegal native, who was drafted eighth overall by Cleveland in 2000, has career averages of 2.1 points and 3.9 rebounds in 434 games.

"We are extremely excited to welcome Gana back into the Mavericks family," general manager Donnie Nelson said. "At the age of 26, he is a young center in the his prime that also possesses significant playoff experience."

really? we just let him walk? how un-greedy like.

I was looking for a sign-and-trade but least it is a empty roster spot.

He was unrestricted. Not like we could match.

I didn't see a S&T happening. Not like they had anything anyone would want.

Thorn took all of the Mavs assets in the Kidd trade, not much left to trade for....a resigned 4 million dollar Devean George, Big Mouth Stackhouse's expiring deal.....the cupboard's bare down there. Takes one team off the FA market.

Haha I like that.

Associated Press

Real, you're better than that!

Mavericks, who were incredibly weak in the post, signing a decent big man who can defend makes them a worse team? Interesting.

Yeah, they overpaid for him, but they got better.

They also hindered themselves by losing out on any chance to get any good FA (such as a backup PG) this off-season. Now, they're relegated to getting vet min guys, all while being over the lux tax. Ouch.

What year was it that we get their first round pick unprotected again? I forgot.

2010. Yep, it should turn out to be a fun offseason

There aren't any good backup PGs who are UFAs this year, plus their need for a good big man was much, much greater.

Wont Jason Terry suffice for backup minutes, as well as Tyronne Lue. If Kid can play 35 mpg. Then Terry can spot 13 at pointguard.

Tyronne Lue is an unrestricted FA, and might go to the Suns. Kidd's getting old. JJ's not ready. Terry mainly been playing SG, and he's, what, 32?

That's my feelings on the Mavs...I still feel like they may need another backup PG.

well Kidd was capable of playing 35+ mpg last year, and Terry can play big minutes too, and even if he played some at SG, doesnt mean he can play 10 mpg at point or JJ Barea play 10 mpg at point.

PG: Kidd, Terry, JJ Barea
SG: Terry, Stackhouse
SF: J. Howard, Stack, George
PG: Dirk, Bass
C: Dampier, Diop

Seems fine with me, having 4 guys who can play point I guess they could do, but doesnt seem necessary. Just because Terry is a combo guard anyway, I guess they could get one. But for 3rd string point guard you would want someone who would play for minimum and be happy if they get no minutes.

Maybe get Darrel Armstrong. However with Kidd, Terry, Barea its not a pressing need.
