Memorial Day was started by former slaves on May, 1, 1865 in Charleston, SC to honor 257 dead Union Soldiers who had been buried in a mass grave in a Confederate prison camp. They dug up the bodies and worked for 2 weeks to ...give them a proper burial as gratitude for fighting for their freedom. They then held a parade of 10,000 people led by 2,800 Black children where they marched, sang and celebrated.

A lot of people think it's a strange time to celebrate. My family typically use this time to remember our family heroes fighting for our country. We usually go on picnics and have a pot luck. It's our way of celebrating their lives through stories and having a good time as a family.

I wonder how they got the word? The Emancipation Proclamation did not:

It didn't buy the slaves

It didn't even apply to slaves in the states that were not part of the Confederacy, Kentucky, Maryland, Delaware and Missouri.

It didn't even apply to slaves in the North.

It might have been the only thing Linclon did right. He didn't start the war to free the slaves, hell he could have bought the slaves at going market value cheaper than the war cost, but for one small issue, no sellers, nor funds if there were. He started the war for reasons that he had no authority in the Constitution.

If it were about Slaves and he had a willing population behind him to free slaves, buying them would seem to be a logical solution. Very much like the Commercial fisherman have been bought out by the federal government in this country.

The Emancipation Proclamation was nothing more that punitive action against the rebellion states, it didn't cover anywhere else. But I imagine they took it as a good thing anyway, hoping for more to follow.

For about 10 years after 1865, blacks were elected to Congress and state legislatures. It looked like conservatives would be overthrown, but they and their KKK pals returned, with revisionist history saying that the Civil War wasn't really about freeing the slaves.

On a serious note, our schools had a "snow" day here to make up and chose Memorial day as the make up day. I was furious and kept my kids out of school. I was not the only one, the schools said that had about 1/3 attendance

I make Lincoln out to be and INFP character type, he and Barrack Obama both are I think. I also think they are the only Presidents that were of this type.
So we have one INFP character that took this Nation into Civil War with the greater cost of life than all other US wars combined.
The other President that has the character type sure seems to be a divider but he has not yet completed his term.
