Just some logic here. I you can get him without giving up your 2nd best player or get him 6 months later with giving your 2nd best player do you do it easily? I don't.

the point is he didn't
and that wont come into account in any way for the heat as an organization aside from them knowing he will agree to some sort of trade to come here.

But you can't get him without giving up your second best player (or equivalent assets). That's what you don't seem to be grasping here. You couldn't six months ago (because he chose Miami) and you can't now.

What you're really saying is, "The fantasy situation of him choosing to sign with us in the off-season is way better than the real-life situation of us trading for him now, so I don't want to trade for him now." That's not called logic.

The past has no bearing on the present. Maybe there's a parallel universe where he signed with the Blazers, but it's not this one.

The Blazers have a roster problem in the frontcourt and limited ways to remedy it in a meaningful way. If CJ and Damian weren't defensive sieves and the team was more successful then we wouldn't even be having this discussion. But the lack of success and the glaring roster problems demand attention.

So sure, it would have been far preferable for Whiteside to come here last summer, but that is irrelevant now. We only have what "is" and how to remedy it moving forward. A CJ for Whiteside trade is about as fair a deal as I can imagine -- a win-win for both trading partners.
 
At this point all we can hope for is that SAC and DEN make a run in the 2nd half and we can get a nice pick. Then a sign and trade becomes enticing for one of those UFA's coming up or, just a trade in the offseason. We cant make a trade with how we are playing this year we're like the desperate guy at the bar and its closing time (everyone knows what were after). What we settle for now we are not going to like in the morning.

So we must suffer and endure

I didn't read it as 'de-valuing him', just that he doesn't want to trade CJ for him.. I don't either. There are ways to improve our interior defense without giving up CJ. At any rate, I don't know why Miami would want to trade a center they just signed to a 4year/$98m contract, and trade big for small. The rest of their bigs aren't that good.

just depends on how far they want to break it down. he is the only guy on the team that is going to net them something that they could view as a net positive for the future.
 
CJ for Whiteside isn't a bad value, but it stings because it doesn't really move us forward in terms of adding starpower. We give up a star to get a star. The objective is to have three star level players. I don't think that Crabbe is a star, probably a solid starter at best, so if we had to move CJ for Whiteside it makes me wonder if we could swing another deal for another scorer using players like Harkless/Vonleh/etc. Someone like Rudy Gay, or Serge Ibaka.

The only problem with trading for Gay or Ibaka is that they're a free agent after this season. It's the same issue with trading for Millsap.

I don't think you guys are getting his point. How chandler is, is not relevant. The fact that he is the hot pursuit is. That to me is glaring that NO isn't gonna split dame and cj. We can get chandler without doing that and I believe that is no's plan.

no trust me I get that's what he wants to do, that's been pretty apparent. but that doesn't make what I said any less true.

I wouldn't say its pointless to at least talk about it. like I said earlier, you have to find out how deep of a rebuild they want to do, and what type of players they would want in return, you give them festus (basically so they can cut him after this year) and one or two others (hopefully Meyers) and those picks we have and they get decent draft opportunity's and a good amount of money for a free agent or two as well. basically try and tempt them with intriguing guys, freeing up money, and draft picks.
 
I think the offseason is where we'll make some moves. If Hayward goes to Boston, Crowder would probably be available, and they might need to move him for space depending on who else they sign/trade for. He'd be perfect here, and you could bring Moe off the bench.

I am still all-in on trading for Ibaka if he resigns. Crowder+Ibaka at the forwards would be better defensively, and bringing Moe and Aminu off the bench would improve our bench defensively. We could then see how well that team does and if it's not good enough then trade for a rim protector next year.

I said this a couple days ago.
If we added Whiteside, that is three max's with zero flexibility to build the roster/bench.

We would have to trade for him with CJ so that we still have flexibility to plug any leftover holes.

Without albatross contracts like Crabbe, Turner, and Leonard, we'd have plenty of flexibility. If we'd signed Whiteside, it's arguable that none of those guys would be here.

So we would have a lineup of:

Dame/Napier/
CJ/Connaughton
Harkless/Vonleh?
Aminu/Davis
Whiteside/???

Very thin roster that would need several more key role players we wouldnt be able to afford.

That bench would lose very game for us, no matter how the starting five played.

And we will have to disagree on your definition of these contracts. I think they are movable, especially Turner and Crabbe based on recent play. Unfortunately, they are also players of need on our roster.
 
well if you did this trade, then moved crabbe or turner that would free up enough to put 2 players of that level on smaller contracts on our bench. would just have to find the right trade for them, like a draft day move that gets us a rookie and another player that is already on that teams roster

True that. $50M+ on Lillard-McCollum duo alone, then $35M on back ups (Turner and Crabbe), $10M on Harkless, $7M on Ezeli who doesn't even play and $10M on Meyers who can't even play. If we traded for Chandler as rumored then it will be another $12M on an ageing center. Staying below luxury tax while filling out the roster will be a task if we don't offload some players soon, and forget about resigning Plumlee - who plays center if he goes then?

I like Crowder suggestion, he has a nice contract. Could send Turner for him but Boston cannot do that IF they get Hayward as they will likely have no cap room (is Thomas about to sign new contract this or next Summer?). Ibaka will probably get s $20M.

Connaughton is not a back up, he cannot play minutes in NBA without hurting the team. Sending out Crabbe or Turner will immediately require to bring replacements.

would be interesting to see what we could surround cj, dame, whiteside and (hopefully) hark with this season and the next. this season wouldn't be too difficult long as we sent out the same amount we would be getting back in whiteside, its next season that would be the real test. unless that group just somehow really tickles PA and he says fuck it I'll pay the tax!
