Re: Finally, it comes out. Brandon Roy is hurt.

I am not really sure why everyone is freaking out though?
Really??? We just discovered that Roy has serious knee problems and may require surgery. And it looks like Oden may have lingering problems, as well, and not be back as soon as we thought. Which means our two best players, the guys we thought would bring us a championship, have a very clouded future, and may never be able to play at 100%.

I'd say that's a pretty good reason for any Blazer fan to freak out.

Re: Finally, it comes out. Brandon Roy is hurt.

Well it is what it is, I hope Roy's outcome is better that I fear. a running team should be fun to watch, I like what I saw last night, we've got the right guys to run. Watch Armon and Nic continue to develop. As long as one does not expect too much it will be enjoyable basketball to watch IMO, I'm a fan no matter what - GO BLAZERS!

No, we didn't just discover this. We knew Roy has had bad knees since his days at UW. Maybe those of you living in denial just discovered it though?

I really don't know what to make of Roy's behavior. First he blamed it on being preseason... then said he needed the ball more and be more of a focus... then he says he needs to play less because of fatigue... and now it is his knee. Maybe. Maybe all of those are true.

But... we have all seen him coast through 3 quarters and then turn it on in the 4th. We saw him coast through an all-star game, then come back the next year motiviated and played well. We have also seen how opponents have learned that a little pushing and grabing can totally throw him off his game... and when he drives now he seems more intent on getting the officials to bail him out than finish the play. We have seen him go into a funk when new players arrive that are a threat to him. He even blamed the fans at one point didn't he? Saying something about the fans wanted him to be more a team player and then when he plays that way they don't like it.

Now... 5 games in 7 nights like they just went through is pretty brutal, but if Camby is doing it...

I like Brandon Roy a lot. I hope his knee is fine... I hope his head is fine... but if you take everything he himself has said so far... I am not sure it all adds up to me.
I guess we just have to trust what he says... it will be interesting to hear what is next.

I see what you are saying--it sounds like a stream of different excuses. But if you were him and maybe in denial about the most important part of your game going out so early in your career, wouldn't you point fingers at just about everything else?

Maybe the most depressing thing to me is his defense so far this year. Even if he continues to improve his perimeter shot, he just doesn't seem to have the quickness to stay in front of other shooting guards right now. I can sort of see how Aldridge and Batum continue to develop and in the best of all worlds Oden comes back 100%, and those are three great championship-caliber players. But your starting shooting guard just can't be a defensive sieve like Roy has been if he's not able to drop 25 a night on the other end.

Man this sucks.

Re: Finally, it comes out. Brandon Roy is hurt.

I could also see the team asking Roy to hold off on this news. Good chance that attendance will suffer if Roy can't play well.

I wonder if BrianGrantFan is ok with Roy playing off the ball more now. Looks to me like we may be lucky to get Rip Hamilton out of that change.

Go Blazers

As a team, we play better without Roy anyway. A lot more motion, a lot more running, and even a lot better defense. Assuming Nate can adjust the offense so that it doesn;t revolve around 1 guy....and that's a big assumption....we should do just as well without Roy as we did with him when playoff time comes

Re: Finally, it comes out. Brandon Roy is hurt.

Is it too late to like the NFL more than basketball?

What team should I pick? Which team do you guys hate the most because I will pick that team and you can rest assured they will disintegrate right before your eyes.

Based on that criteria you should become a Cowboys fan. I'd recommend the Packers, but they've endured just as many injuries as the Blazers this year (as a percentage of their roster) so that could be tough.

The one thing they may miss is one guy who can command a double team, but I agree that the few games I've watched this year where Roy was a non-factor ball movement and defense have been better.

I guess we get to find out if Nic is as good as we think he might be when plays are finally run for him (sort of like last night)

I think Nate has already shown us in the Pistons game that he still wants the team to revolve around one guy, but this time the guy is Aldridge. Kind of an interesting move, because Aldridge is clearly less talented than Roy was in his prime (god it sucks to have to use the past tense there), but on the flip side it's much easier to focus a team around a power forward than a shooting guard. The Spurs have been doing it for a decade with great success.

I think the plan is that Aldridge is going to see the ball on nearly every possession, and how the defense behaves dictates how much movement our players have. Aldridge is a much more willing passer and we have far more talented secondary players than the last time we tried it (with Zach Randolph). People used to complain about the black hole Randolph was, but he was playing a lot of the time with guys like Telfair, Khryapa and Dixon.

Already we've seen more lobs this year than I remember all last season. So it seems like there's more of a commitment to getting LA buckets in the paint and not just 20 footers.

It really is time for Aldridge to shine.

And for Batum to show he can be a true second banana. He's already at 10 FGA this year (up from 7 last year) but I think the team needs to shoot for him to take 14-16 shots a night. It's a little sad, but he's been a much, much more efficient scorer this year than Roy. We're entering a phase where he should have at least as many shots as Roy.

To late, the Cowboys have already disintegrated.

The Portland Trailblazers Training Staff: Fucking over fans since 2001.

Now it really is time for those clowns to get kicked to the curb.

Re: Finally, it comes out. Brandon Roy is hurt.

The problem may be unrelated to everything we have heard also... not going to speculate on what that would be... who knows... just gotta keep cheering for him and wishing him well.

No, not really, because that means that we have a lesser version of Brandon Roy. Odd call-out, since I already posted numerous times in this thread last night. I think we'll see more of Roy's posting up, though, than running through screens. It doesn't help bad knees to be in constant motion, IMO.

After a night of sleep, I now think Roy is just frustrated that his knee isn't well. That may change, or it may not, but it is his reality right now. We're probably all overreacting at this point.

Re: Finally, it comes out. Brandon Roy is hurt.

Anyone think KP was onto something when he was unwilling to initially sign Roy to a max $$/max year contract??

The medical staff didn't draft anyone... they just do the best with what we have. Maybe they did evaluations on the draft picks and should be blamed too... not sure.

Re: Finally, it comes out. Brandon Roy is hurt.

Can we Trade him from Chris Paul now that his career is DEFINITELY OVER.

Re: Finally, it comes out. Brandon Roy is hurt.

Here's something Brandon had me throw together for him. He picked the music, so don't hate.

Regardless how bad his injury is, It's no secret that he was working too hard carrying the load and that our offense needed to be reworked. I believe this is all part of the process, and I'm glad its only week whatever it is. Its time for this team to create a new identity, and I believe were seeing the growing pains.

anyone here believe in Karma?

Re: Finally, it comes out. Brandon Roy is hurt.

So he isn't trying to get Nate fired? I am so confused.

Re: Finally, it comes out. Brandon Roy is hurt.

I'm totally stunned. When will the hurting stop? Why is this franchise so cursed? What in the world have we done to deserve this? My heart goes out to Roy, of course, but this is just devastating for every Blazer fan. Somebody please wake me up, because this has got to be a bad dream.

Aren't you the guy who has spent the better part of the early season bashing Brandon Roy in multiple threads, saying he has no heart, that he is a quitter, a bad leader, a bad teammate, selfish, etc. etc.?

Or, was that all a bad dream?

Re: Finally, it comes out. Brandon Roy is hurt.

Kind of makes you wonder whether Blazers management didn't see this coming with the decision to spend so much acquiring Mathews in the off-season. Wesley will never be Brandon, but it's great that this team has two qualified SGs to keep Brandon's minutes down.

Re: Finally, it comes out. Brandon Roy is hurt.

Depending on the severity of the injury I think people are overreacting.

He isn't the same player right now because he's been dragging his leg around this season because it hurts and that's why his explosiveness is gone. I almost find that to be good news. I'd be more worried if his knee was fine and the explosiveness wasn't there. This just tells me he needs to get his knee right so he can be playing at a high level again.

People have been making it out to be that he's lost his athleticism and he won't be the same blahblahblah. While it's true he has, it's because his knee is killing him right now. Who's to say it wouldn't come back after the swelling goes down and he doesn't have to keep draining it? We don't know.

I don't think this is the end of the road with Roy being a great player in the NBA.

I disagree. IMO you don't get this many knee injuries on one team without training being a factor. There have been other professional teams that have found out that something they have been doing for years has harmed their players. This wouldn't be the first time. Phoenix completely redid their training regiment when they figured out that some of the stuff they were doing was causing their players knee problems. I believe there have also been a couple of NFL teams which did as well.

Re: Finally, it comes out. Brandon Roy is hurt.

Pretty amazing for the Blazers' training staff to have been able to have had an impact on Roy's knees before he became a Blazer. Those guys must really suck at what they do.

The Roy situation

Ok so I did not hear about this ti'l this morning. Listen we all knew something wasnt right. Of course we knew he was hobbled. The question is how bad? I cant really get a good feel just how bad it is. hes getting a 2nd opinion and im assuming its basically wether he needs micro fracture. However reading all 500 articles and interviews on Roy this morning.... it seems its all speculation on how bad he is or if cutting PT will help.

Quick - is all but hinting hes done.

Roy - seems to insist its not that bad from his post game interview and with SI

National media - are saying limited minutes

Bill Simmons - gloating

I guess we find out results today. But it sounds like (unless this doc finds a major issue) that roy is really gonna pace himself till mid season. Thats my guess again assuming this isnt season ending. I really think the early schedule has made things worse. But as far as whats being written it seems everyone ha stheir own thoughts on roy. While roy seemed pretty cool in that interview AFTER the game. Its really strange. Last year when roy got hurt in LA... he talked as if he knew he was out. Right now he sounds like he just needs to pace himself. I dont fucking know. It is another day in blazer bizarro world.
