Because one was done in malice, to provoke a reaction. The other was done because he's a friend and he's mourning a loss. You don't see the difference between the two? Do you think HCP has that as his avatar to cause pain to others? Maybe he doesn't realize that people find it offensive. I'm sure he would change it if he were asked to.

What I don't get is why other posters take the bait and give him a reaction (if that was his reason for bringing up Luke, and I'm not certain that it was).

Seems easy enough to just shrug it off than be upset about it and retaliate by attacking MIXUM.

Is it at all possible that MIXUM was actually honoring Lucas by pointing out the apparent lack of effort last night by the team compared to the intensity that Luke was known for during his playing days?

Let me get this straight. HCP has an avatar of him pretending to punch Maurice Lucas, but MIXUM is the one who got banned for being "insensitive." Do I have that right?

That's been the best part of this. Mixum layed into the team because they were playing like pansies, and not like Luke would want them to play in the wake of his passing, and got suspended for it. HCP has a picture of him pretending to punch the recently deceased icon, and that is ok. I personally don't have a problem with either, but the double standard is amazing. People like HCP (I am one of them) and people don't like Mixum.

So what if I am anti-censorship? This thread is about MIXUM's suspension. Should I not comment on it, or should I just critique the opinions of others, which seems to be your purpose for posting in it? I happen to agree with the suspension, as I previously posted, but not necessarily for the reasons given by the people in charge.

Would you care to inform the ignorant as to how an avatar portraying a poster as assaulting a recently deceased man is less offensive than a post suggesting that a basketball team's lack of effort was disgraceful? Because HCP knew him? How is that picture portraying friendship? Does this mean that he and Trevor Ariza are buddies too?

I wouldn't go so far as to insult HCP for the picture, but I see where Shooter is coming from. When I saw that avatar, I was a bit taken aback; moreso than when I saw MIXUM's suspension-inducing posts.

What is the alternative? That he was actually in a fight with Lucas, and the punch just happened to be captured by a third party?

I don't know this for a fact, but I would be shocked if HCP's avatar picture is anything less than a tribute to the man that he knew... a tribute to his sense of humor and the time that they spent together.

For someone to look at that picture and think that HCP is actually punching Lucas... ? That strikes me as utterly ridiculous.

All I know is that it is in extremely poor taste to post a picture of a man about to get punched in the face when said man has recently passed away. You would think even the most simple-minded poster would realize this.

For God's sakes, Ed. You astound me. I never had any doubt that the "punch" was faked, but the very idea of it is offensive. The look of it, the feel of it, even the slightest notion that Lucas might be punched is repulsive--especially in light of the fact that he just passed away.

For you to take such a literal, lawyerly approach to this subject is mind-boggling.

To be fair, I didn't see the whole context of the thread in which the comments were made, nor do I really want to; but while I see provocation in MIXUM's comments, I don't see malice. I don't see any intent to cause psychological pain to anyone, anymore than I see the same in HCP's avatar. I can see how someone would be offended by either. But I'm not one to request "offensive" material be removed, so I'm certainly not going to PM HCP to request he change it.

All I'm saying is that I see more similarities between the two than differences.

No, I don't think he was actually punching Lucas. I understand that it was HCP kidding around. But it was still intended to look like he was punching him, and doesn't feel appropriate to me 2 days after his death. Just my opinion, I guess, but I'm obviously not alone (although the company I'm keeping makes me wonder...)

Also in the interest of full disclosure, the decision to suspend him was mine. We do allow people to be assholes, but we don't allow people to be hurtful, and his posts were just that.

Alright, let's break it down to brass tax. DC's post above suggests that it was primarily the content of the posts that earned the suspension. Ed's post indicates that prior history was (likely) also a contributing factor. It's_GO_time gets at the pertinent question.

If I had made the same pair of posts that MIXUM did, would I have been suspended?
