Re: Official Rudy Got Screwed Thread

The human is not a 'platform'. There's a reason this idea was used in the NBA dunk contest, because its a lot harder to get footing off a human body and its lot harder to get a good vertical off a human body.

Anybody says apple in this forum and you say orange. Your here just to start shit and talk smack. Clever.

Re: Official Rudy Got Screwed Thread

the 10 foot jump is off a hard, wooden surface. The 7 foot jump is off a much softer human body that doesn't provide great footing or resistance to your force.

I'm sure Wilson Chandlers massive love handles engulfed Nate's foot and made it much more difficult. Take off your rose colored glasses, Nate's dunks weren't that great.

Re: Official Rudy Got Screwed Thread

I'll add my two cents I guess. Overall, the dunk contest has gotten lame again. Just four dunkers and two rounds? We need a little more than that NBA for the most anticipated event of the night.

Loved Rudy's second dunk. It was pretty sick, and no way he should've gotten fourth. He was robbed. I don't know if he should've been in the finals, but he wasn't the worst out of the four.

In any case, I would've loved to see what Rudy had planned if he made the finals. Maybe he can give us a little something back home of what he would've done.

Re: Official Rudy Got Screwed Thread

His second dunk was nice, but lets say Nate got a 35, JR would of went through. I think the judges expected more from Rudy, and it's a bit iffy all the scores. However, the final was good. Nate over Dwight is crazy. The best dunker won.

Re: Official Rudy Got Screwed Thread

I knew it was over when Chambers only gave Rudy an 8 for his off-the-backboard Gasol dunk, then followed that by giving Robinson a 9 on the stepping-over-Chandler dunk.

Re: Official Rudy Got Screwed Thread

Some national media perspective on Rudy:

Rudy Fernandez had two of the best three dunks of the first round but inexplicably received a 42 on each dunk.

His first dunk was sick, but even sicker was the score the judges – who apparently need the dunker to rock a cape in order to give out tens – gave Rudy. A 42? Really? Why only a 42, because he didn’t take 15 minutes setting up his dunk, working the crowd and putting on a form-fitting tank top? It was obvious as soon as this score was delivered that Howard and Robinson would meet in the finals even if they just made layups.

Even sicker than that was the disrespect shown to Fernando Martin, the first Spanish-born player to play in the NBA, by the TNT announcers. Fernandez honored his countryman by wearing his old Portland jersey while the TNT voices made Ricky Martin jokes. That was horrible.

His second dunk was the best of the night. And it should have scored a 50 without a doubt. But for some stupid reason, Pau Gasol was tossing the ball behind his back on the first five attempts. Is this also a passing contest? No it’s a dunk contest. Gasol’s inability to hit the pass ruined any chance Fernandez had to advance to the finals.

Nate Robinson deserved to win Saturday's dunk contest but Rudy Fernandez got royally ripped off.

A victory for Robinson is a victory for the Little People across the world. Good for him. All 2 feet 11 of him.

He was clearly the crowd favorite and saved the dunk contest. It went from mediocre to great because of Robinson.

However...

Dwight Howard shouldn't have been in the final round. No way. He didn't deserve it. Fernandez did.

Fernandez's first two dunks were far more challenging and creative and the judges -- because of bias toward Howard -- gave Fernandez low ball scores of 42 in his first two rounds when Robinson deserved far higher.

Howard got two perfect scores but didn't deserve them.

That was awful. Howard was a legacy pick. The judges wanted him in the final round because he's popular.

That was a G-E-I-C-O conspiracy.

Re: Official Rudy Got Screwed Thread

That New Mexico article is horribly whiney. The TNT announcers weren't disrespecting Fernando Martin. They just had no idea who a scrub who averaged 0.9 points in 24 NBA games.

That's besides the point (his scoring average). He was the first Spanish born player to ever play in the NBA, and one of the first foreign born players to play in the NBA (that didn't go to college in the US).

And I think considering they pulled the "LaRue Martin" and "Martin Lawrence" and "Gina" references, and then added "Ricky Martin" comments (all done to make fun of the jersey), it was disrespectful. The ONLY guy who showed any class was Kevin Harlan.

Reggie Miller showed why he's a joke of an announcer, and Kenny Smith both showed why he doesn't do games and that he depends on someone basically calling him out for his stupidity (which would be Charles Barkley).

Way to show some respect dude for a guy who tragically died in a car crash and was considered one of the top Euro players back in the day, and is a hall of famer in FIBA.
I don't see you suiting up in the NBA. It was obvious lack of research for the TNT announcers except Kevin Harlan since the production crew had the Fernando Martin graphic set up while the dunk took place.

Re: Official Rudy Got Screwed Thread

Rudy deserved better scores, but oh well, its only the dunk contest. I'm over it.

Re: Official Rudy Got Screwed Thread

There was some good news imo, LeBron James in next years competition. This alone could bring out the best dunkers to show their stuff against him. Has the potential to be a good one.

No, I'm here to talk basketball. [Deleted.]

Rudy's dunks were not better than Nate's dunks. Sorry. Because Rudy doesn't wear my team's jersey and I don't have a massive love affair towards him, I think that makes my opinion slightly more valid than yours, homer.

Subjective.

Nate's first dunk was better than Rudy's first dunk, but Nate's second dunk was lame. Extremely lame. It took Rudy forever to complete his dunk, but at least it is arguably the best dunk of the night. Rudy's first dunk is better than Nate's second imo, just on account of how freaking lame Nate's was.

I really don't care Rudy didn't get win, I'm just glad he didn't embarrass himself badly like I thought he was going to do.

This is true. But you do have a massive love affair with trolling the Blazers board, and that is what makes your opinion slightly less valid than anybody else's in here.

Aaaaaaaaaaand it begins.

Re: Official Rudy Got Screwed Thread

Not with the regular trolls hitting this forum..no.

as for Rudy, he got screwed.
Nate was good, but I still think Rudy had a better dunk, much better than the 42 or whatever.

Re: Official Rudy Got Screwed Thread

I didn't know the lineup before the dunk contest, but when I saw it I knew the best Rudy could do was come in third. As for Pau blowing the passes, I expected no less from a L*ker.

Re: Official Rudy Got Screwed Thread

The problem with Rudy Fernandez in the contest is that he didn't have any "great dunks".

His first dunk was good, but pretty much any of the non-short dunkers could have done it pretty easily.

His second dunk was nice, but he ran out of time there. They got done ripping Nate Robinson and Birdman prior to the contest, so repeated attempts weren't going to go over well. And it didn't help that Rudy was looking pretty poor in his attempts too. Yes, Gasol's passes weren't perfect, but Rudy wasn't gaining any semblance of control over the ball on that. If you land it on the first attempt, it has a wow factor. When you see a guy pathetically miss it 8 times in a row, there's no wow factor.

I agree, that Nate Robinson's dunk deserved a bit lower score, but so did Rudy Fernandez on his last dunk, os that should have washed it out. I don't remember the scores, but maybe that gets JR Smith in the finals, and changes the entire component of the finals.

And the off the back dunk isn't too hard. A kid did that during our 8th grade pep rally game, in game, and he has no where near the leaping ability of Nate Robinson. But what made Nate's dunk a little more difficult, is that Chandler was turned differently than usual. Usually their head is in line with the basket, giving the player more of a runway to leap off of, and a straighter area for the foot to be. Instead, Chandler was turned sideways, putting the curves on the sides into play...which did come into play on the first attempt.

Overall, the dunk contest was a let down. Nate Robinson did well in the Finals, but Dwight Howard was a big let down.

dwight howard and jr smith both took forEVER to make their dunks too, and got higher scores. there is no way in hell ANYONE can look at jr smiths and rudys second dunks and say that jrs was better.

nate got a crap score deservedly for his off the back dunk, but still a 41.

its just the dunk contest so who cares, but i expected a fair fight.

Re: Official Rudy Got Screwed Thread

 You guys are great. Rudy may have deserved an extra couple of points but no way did he deserve to be in the Finals. He was pretty boring.

I wish Joe Alexander or Russell Westbrook would have gotten in. They understand the showmanship aspect of the contest which Rudy did not.

The NBA should get rid of Sprite and have Vince McMahon and the WWE sponsor the dunk contest.
