Merged: The Draft Thread For Stuff About The Draft Including Thoughts About The Draft

Stan,
How about an athletic 7' who can sing all of the songs at a Justin Bieber concert? We'll throw in pick #26, too!
I guess established can mean anything, we've established that he sucks so at least they'll know what they're getting.

I'm pretty sure they mean established as a solid player worthy of a 12 pick.

I like the article but don't agree about Philadelphia going for best player available. They did that - apparently - in 2015 draft when they selected Okafor who was tipped as #1 at some point, and it was a big mistake because he turned out to not even be the best player available. Had they drafted for need back then, they would have gone for a guard who can shoot. Looking at players selected after Okafor, it would have probably been Devin Booker. They'd be so much better off with him now. Same with Porzingis who was selected immediately after him and who 76ers apparently also liked at the time.

God please no.
I would ONLY be ok with this if it was our worst contract imo (Crabbe) and also ONLY be ok with this if it was our worst pick.

So basically I not ok with this because it probably won't go that way and I would want a 2nd back.

This has been talked about on this board all season. We are probably the "source".
Until I see it happen I doubt that it will. This is Paul Allen we are talking about. I think most people just assume we will do it because of the luxury tax.

Hey, Indiana. Take my advice: Trade PG while you can still get something for him. Don't let yourself get LaMarcussed.

Trail Blazers on line 1.

I like what you did here. Post of the offseason.

Other than BOS (who has proven reluctant to trade anything of value), who has better assets to help IND jump start their rebuild? We can offer them 3 picks in this draft, plus one in 2019 plus any player/players of their choice, other than Dame, C.J. and Nurkic, to make the salaries match. We can also take back some of their old guys who are of no use to them if they hit the reset button. This may be a pipe dream, but IND now seems determined to trade George and his value is lower than it was at the trade deadline when ATL offer a package of four lesser draft picks.

If I'm Neil, I'm going all in and swinging for the fences on this one. This is our best chance to add another all star, who is the same age as our best player. He's a great 2-way player who also fills a position of need and one of the few players in the league that can do a respectable job of guarding LeBron and Kevin Durant.

It may not happen, but you have to try and if you try, you have to try HARD.

Oh I agree completely, someone posted earlier that it's a binary equation if you can get him you give up all the assets you can not dame,cj,nurk you do it dont even question it. My whole pessimism around the idea surrounds the fact that we couldnt trade our picks right now for a top 5 pick. So any team with a top-5 pick right off the bat has a better package pick wise. It's tough to argue our young players are worth much of anything and are on some BLOATED contracts. PHX could put together a package as that includes a top-5 pick and a couple young players that would easily be worth more as an example. That and Prichard is unlikely to just hook us up with PG lol although I wish that relationship would pay off at some point for blazer fans. In this case I think he holds onto George if the best package comes from us. I think it's easier for a GM to keep his job if he says "well I tried my best to keep my superstar, but he left" rather than trading him for 70 cents on the dollar. Even if trading him for 70 cents is the prudent move for the franchise moving forward.

This is somewhat true, but I would argue that the difference is much closer for a team needing to rebuild with a bunch of young talent, compared to another team that just needs one more piece. The first team can use more shots and has time to wait for someone to develop and will plan on getting more high lottery picks throughout the rebuild. The second team needs a single player at a higher level that can contribute.

If I were rebuilding from scratch right now, the Portland picks would be enticing as I would use all three of them on center and PF projects (who take longer to develop), guaranteeing I would be in the lottery for the next few years. Once I'm done in the lottery, then at least one of my bigs should have developed by that point. That entire proposition would not be helpful to a team looking to add one more piece.

We gotta dump at least one of those contracts. I'm fine if we have to include a draft pick to accomplish that. I dont want three rookies on the roster next year.

How it actually benefits us to dump this contract in the short term? What does it accomplish?

It would make sense if we were able to then go after free agents. We won't. We will not get any high salary free agent for the next 3 years.

I hope this is an errant rumor. I would much rather see us try and play Crabbe and Biebs a bit in the first half of the season when they might be able to show some value. But for the playoffs, Crabbe started to look pretty decent. And Biebs was injured most of the year.

If we dump them while they are rock bottom and throw in draft picks aren't we becoming Orlando?

I do not believe dumping salary now is about signing new free agents later. It is about who we want to keep on the roster long term.

If the plan is to re-sign Nurkic and Vonley to new contracts next off-season, then starting to make room for those large contracts now makes sense. Keep in mind, both Nurkic and Vonley will be RFA, so NO might need to match some very large offers.

Also, PA has said going into the LT in the past did not work out well for them. He said he might do it short term with this roster, but gave the impression he would not be happy about paying large amounts of LT long term. Not sure where some of the posters in this thread get the impression he will. That is not what he has said in an interview. And PA has been very accurate with the info he gives out.

Give it time and wait and see if you cannot get rid of them without attaching significant assets. I swear some people would offer three picks plus CJ to just have Leonard's $10M off the books.

By acquiring rookies now we ensure that we have a chance at having rotation players at low salaries in 1-3 years. We should be looking for buyers for Turner and Crabbe but we should first ensure that nobody is going to take them without our pick attached. Actually with Crabbe's skillset I'd say we should be able to even get something in return from a team that needs a shooter.

Getting rid of Meyers $10M actually solves nothing. We may as well let Aminu and Davis go and have extra $14M of space. It'd also be much easier and should probably allow us to get some second rounders back, even.

I totally get what you are saying, however, maybe this rumor tells us something new.

Just maybe NO’s plan is to take only two players out of the first round, not three. And just maybe consolidating pics to move up does not appear to be a workable option, or too costly of an option. So the third first round pick does not have much value to him, but it maybe worth something to a team that needs a pic.

It would have to be a team who wants the player regardless. Who takes a huge contract, loses their cap space, just for the 26th pick? We are not talking a 1 year
deal. it just has never made sense to me why people think one pick could sway a team. And Neil is not giving up all 3. I guess we'll find out in a few weeks.

No to dumping salaries with picks unless it's to create cap space. Don't trade a bad contract unless you'll be able to acquire a player to upgrade that position.
