Re: What happens with Gomes?

He hasn't proven to be better than Cunningham, and they play different positions. May as well pay Cunningham 2nd round money than Gomes' deal to battle for 10th man in the rotation.

Gomes and Cunningham play the same position, IMO. Gomes played about a third of his minutes at the power forward spot and the rest at the small forward spot... on a team that lacked many good options at the 3. Cunningham played almost exclusively at the PF on a team that had a lot of swing men.

Re: What happens with Gomes?

Based on what parameters? He's a 6'9" shooter who can handle the ball if needed. We had all heard going into the draft that the Blazers wanted outside shooting. Would you instead draft a 19 year-old who can't shoot as well, and hope that he develops into a better shooter than old man Babbitt (who turned 21 5 days ago) is right now? How many 50/40/90 shooters who play SF are available at any age? If the guy becomes a poor man's Kyle Korver, I'll be thrilled, but I think his ceiling is higher due to his explosive vertical and larger size.

I don't understand how your question relates to the bolded part.

Why are you trying to argue with me when we agree? It's weirding me out.

And outside of mediocre 3 point shooting, Cunningham outplayed Gomes last year by comparison.

I think he read it as "I'm saying he's not a good prospect."

OK. That's not relevant to my point, but OK.

My point was that IF Gomes is good enough to play ahead of Cunningham, he's worth keeping. If he's not, then he won't steal minutes.

So cutting Gomes BECAUSE OF PLAYING TIME MATTERS doesn't make sense to me.

Yeah, I totally misread the part I bolded. We disagree on how much age matters, but it appears to be an issue as to what degree it matters. Probably not worth spending the rest of the afternoon debating.

I don't think Gomes will get the chance to show if he's a better option than Cunningham, but if he does get the chance, then definitely he should play if he proves to help the team win more games.

Re: What happens with Gomes?

If Blazers waive Gomez, was this move to cut salary costs?

BTW-I'm one of the few who does not like the move.

Martell disappeared against Phoenix. He failed in his biggest test. Why don't you like the deal?

Re: What happens with Gomes?

That led to another poster taking some sort of issue with that and not letting it go

Only one of us is still going on and on and on and on and on and on and on about it.

Re: What happens with Gomes?

Back to the topic for a moment......

I predict that Gomes either gets traded before next Wednesday OR will be waived by us. He is redundant. He will take minutes away from Cunningham and Babbitt if he stays.

Good call! " Team president Larry Miller said the Blazers will probably release newly acquired forward Ryan Gomes in order to avoid taking on the remaining three seasons of his contract.

The team has until Tuesday to make a decision, but Miller said he has already told Gomes' agent not to fly him to Portland."

Re: What happens with Gomes?

He will either get bought out or included in a deal.

Re: What happens with Gomes?

I think Gomes is a top rate bench player and I don't have much interest in high draft picks who fail big; they never seem to pan out no matter how many chances you give them, e.g. Kwame Brown, Darko milicic.

e.g. Greg Oden?

Re: What happens with Gomes?

e.g. Greg Oden?

I guess that depends on whether you think Greg's problem is his body or some other "intangible". I hope somehow his body can hold up and we can find out.

Re: What happens with Gomes?

Gomes for Beasley, anyone?

Troubled but very talented. Only 21, a change of scenery could do him a lot of good.

Re: What happens with Gomes?

Yes. If this becomes Webster for Beasley and Babbitt, it's a win.

I don't really see the downside, if Allen is willing to pay the money. It's either Beasley or nothing (Gomes getting waived...and even if he stayed, he doesn't really make a major difference). Beasley may or may not still have a nice NBA career ahead of him, but I'd love to take a no-risk flier to find out.

Re: What happens with Gomes?

They can't add Beasley.

In Miller's statement after the firing of KP, he said they would still maintain the type of people KP looked for. They can't say that and then bring in Beasley.

WHOA WHOA WHOA WHOA WHOA.... Lets' try and spread some of that credit around.

It wasn't JUST Pritchard who brought these guys in.

Agreed. Glad to see you finally opening your eyes

Sure they can. An organizational philosophy is not a suicide pact. ;) They can deviate from it here and there where it makes sense. Essentially a no-risk flier on Beasley, for a guy the team plans to waive anyway, makes sense IMO. Beasley would be one of the youngest players on the team...I don't think anyone believes he'll be influencing the other, more veteran players on the team. If he remains lazy and unmotivated, the team can cut him loose.

And in a year or two his Chad and Mike will be gone because KP is no longer here. Why were they hired? Because of KP.

A GM is responsible for putting the roster together. You can identify players, but someone has to fight the other teams off to get them.

Re: What happens with Gomes?

Free agency: #Blazers are targeting point guard and wing positions beginning July 1.

Who is making these decisions right now?

Why do I feel like there's a 50/50 chance Batum isn't here next year?

Unfortunately, I think there's a greater risk that Oden won't be here, either by the start of this season or by the deadline next year. New GMs seem to like to "put their stamp" on their new team.

Of course, if the new GM is a really good one and makes his mark with good/great trades, fine. I'm just worried that the new GM won't be really good and players other than Roy and Aldridge will be shipped out for lesser returns to remake the team.
