Merged: Why is Oden in Indiana?

Mike Barrett intimated during the last game that Greg gets depressed being around the team during the playoffs and not being able to contribute by playing. I don't know if that's true, but I do think that we've seen in the past that Greg can be kind of a moody guy. Part of me says that I'd love to see him on the side lines rooting for the team and soaking up the playoff atmosphere, but I know that the reality is that it's pretty uncomfortable for a 7' guy recovering from a knee injury to try to sit folded up for a couple of hours at a time. I guess bottom line, all I care about is having him healthy and in a mood to do some business by next fall. If some of mama's home cooking helps with that...who am I to question the Blazers coaching staff and Greg?

GO is still in Indy. Safe to say, he doesn't hold a candle to Brandon in the heart department. Oh, and Joel is back in PDX. He was apparently seen at Dorenbecher for a community service even last week.

• A week before the end of the regular season, Greg Oden told the media he would be traveling with the Blazers during the playoffs, and was looking forward to the experience. So where has the 7-footer been? In his hometown of Indianapolis, rehabbing.

Oden is gone with Blazer management’s blessing. The thinking was, when he is around his teammates and not playing, Oden takes it hard. He is better off being at a distance from all the action.

The Blazer center is almost six months out from December knee surgery. All indications are rehab is going well and he will be ready to go for October training camp. “I don’t think there’s a doubt,” Pritchard said. “He’s going to be fine.”

I haven't talked about Oden on this board. On my previous board, I defended him against the many trolls that this board doesn't have. When Blazer fans there ranked the most important Blazers, they said Roy, Aldridge, and maybe Pritchard. I said 1) Paul Allen, 2) Oden, and 3) McMillan. But finally my Oden support is becoming tepid.

With Oden, every excuse in the book has been used to avoid basketball. Before his true injury, he already showed a pattern of escapism. Before his first Summer League, he couldn't make it for some workouts. In Summer League, he caught a cold so he couldn't play full minutes. Then he had the tonsils and stopped playing. After a couple of weeks, the normal time to recover from a tonsillectomy (I had one in the 1st grade) he just didn't feel like playing in the US tryouts, a crucial learning experience. Then came the exhibition season and he was totally out of shape. Then he tried to play and he was always out of breath, dragging his tired body around the court. Then he got injured in the first game because he was out of shape from not playing all summer. On and on. All along, Pritchard said he'd be better later if he didn't play now. Then later, it was obvious Oden couldn't play now because he hadn't played before. Pritchard's draft choices reflect upon him, so it's in his self-interest to praise any players he decided to acquire. Most GMs are tougher on their employees.

Then an injury came not during activity, but from sitting on the couch. Early this season, I vaguely remember that he didn't want to be seen standing at a football game or some sport so he left and hid. Now he's too shy to go to Blazer games and claims his leg hurts too much to appear in public for even 5 minutes. You'd think the guy could show up at games next to the team for some minimum time. I think he's shy, unaggressive, and will never grow up until the lax Pritchard gets his own head straight on this issue so he can straighten out Oden's attendance.

I still think he will eventually be a top center. But not requiring even minimum attendance to watch tapes and practices only delays his development. If we have to pay much to sign him it will be a hard decision.

Re: Why is Oden in Indiana?

1) he has been here rehabbing for several months
2) he is just gone for a week or two
3) he was told by his doctors to take it easy and rest his knee for a while
4) he will be back for the playoffs or earlier
5) most of the games that he has missed he would have missed anyway since they were road games
6) so he did not think ahead of time about asking his mom to gets league pass. Now he has missed some games and said he will figure out how to watch. That might mean going to a friends or getting league pass. He just was not able to watch a couple games.
7) Joel has been gone for a lot longer with no complaints till this thread. Players often take time away when they are injured for extended periods of time.

These are guesses and assumptions. Joel has topped out to his ceiling and has nothing to learn. In contrast, Oden has a famously low basketball IQ holding him back. He needs to absorb information like a sponge. He should be embarrassed by his terrible reputation outside of Oregon as a lazy unmotivated Benoit Benjamin. Unlike my last board, this one doesn't have real trolls from other teams, so many here don't know of his reputation around the league.

As for Minstrel's comparison to Sheed, I don't care about nonbasketball behavior either. I was a Sheed defender. He didn't lack interest like Oden. The fiery guy was MOTIVATED and energetic.

I really don't even want to think about Greg right now, sure he probably is the linchpin for any championship aspirations this team might have in future seasons, but for now I just want to focus on what the actual team we have is doing on the court; we'll have all summer to fret about Oden's health, conditioning, psychology and commitment.

I think it takes more than just strictly being on the floor with teammates to be a part of the team. Sure, it matters a lot more what GO does on the floor than what he does on the bench, locker room, team airplane, whatever. But there are variance to everything. There are teammates and there are good teammates. There are friends and there are good friends.

And I don't care whether he's considered a "good teammate," since I'm not on the team. His teammates can care, obviously, and that's fine. (Do any of us know whether they actually are upset by this? I think it would be pretty silly if they weren't bothered by this and fans were bothered on their behalf.)

I made the comparison before to Kobe Bryant. Leaving aside questions of whether he committed rape, if Bryant had been a Blazer and a big part of four championships, would you really care that he hasn't been a "good teammate" in terms of hanging out with the guys, slapping their backs and generally fostering camaraderie? Because, by all accounts, Bryant keeps pretty strictly to himself outside of practices and games and has generally kept himself aloof from teammates.

If that would matter to you, then you and I simply disagree at a fundamental level that probably can't be reconciled. My view is that I have no relationship with any of these guys beyond watching them play basketball. All I care about, regarding them, is their basketball performance. "Good teammate" is only relevant insofar as they play within a team concept on the floor. Whether they exhibit the requisite "team spirit" and foster good personal relationships with their teammates is 100% irrelevant to me. It may (or may not) be relevant to a player's teammates...but the final product is all I care about.

Does anyone know for sure if he is still in Indiana? I heard some reports that he is here for the playoffs and talking to teammates in the locker room.

This is the answer. Greg is a VERY sensitive and emotional person. He is also an odd duck. He's just weird man! He's an Aquarius for godsake! He will kick ass just like last year, only moreso. Just watch. My only concern with Greg has been his injuries.

Talent :check:
Size :check:
Defense :check:

People need to get over their inordinate nit picking of Greg's every move. This reminds me of Martell chatter circa 2007. We didn't get Paul, Jordan or Durant. Get the fuck over it guys!

As much as I like Greg, I think that you need to look at it as anything he gives you is a bonus at this point. Maybe if he plays 70+ games next year and has a good season (13 and 10 or better) I would change that opinion, but for now, I think that we shouldn't count on Oden to be any type of pillar or foundation for our team.

Wrepped.

Meanwhile, Durant would slit your throat to win a game. As it turns out,Oden is a very Portlandish person. Let's get him some Xanax so he can be like everybody else here.

Everyone's a Judge. It's ironic considering nobody has any clue what its like to be in his position. While there truly is only one Judge I believe its good for Greg and all the hate will fuel him to become great

Meanwhile, Durant would not kill a fly talk about nice guy

I actually agree with this in that injuries will always be a concern for me, or at least until he has 3 consecutive 72+ games played seasons. I expect 16 and 12 for averages going forward with 2.5 to 3.5 blocks and .650+ FG% I also expect ELITE defensive rating/rebound rate. Oden is what he is. He is enough to be a linch pin defensive presence. On the upside he could become an unstoppable scorer in the middle. On the downside he could be hurt every year from here on out. I'm also concerned about lazy fouls.

Truth be told we won't know until the future unfolds. What I DO know is everyone said all this same garbage last summer and he was pretty dominant when he could stay on the floor.

In the end, I don't think there is a poster on this board that will have a problem with Oden if he comes here next year and continues his play where he left off.

But it sure would be nice if he publically showed a little more interest in the team.

Yes, some of us did say such things last summer....and we were correct.

You brought up the comparison to Kobe Bryant, but I don't think that's a good example. It's easier to deal with results than it is to understand the dynamics that led to those results. We know Kobe's results have been good because he won championships. What we don't know is if he would have won more if he was a better teammate. Would Shaq have stayed and won another championship in L.A.? We obviously will never get to know the answer.

This is a major difference between me and fans like you (which I don't mean judgmentally, just noting that there are plenty of others who would agree with you). I really don't care about "what player X could have been if only." This is a major divide among Blazers fan when it comes to Rasheed Wallace. Some of us just stick to the bottom line results and say "Wallace was a good to very good player for the Blazers and helped the team win games." These fans tend to appreciate the fact that Wallace was on the team. Other fans say, "Wallace could have been great/a superstar/as good as Tim Duncan had he simply cared more." These fans generally (I can't claim anything is universal) have a great disdain for Wallace and blame him for not being what they thought he could have been.

Relating this back to Oden, all I care about is what he ends up producing. If his purported lack to team spirit leads to him being a subpar player, I won't think much of him...not because of his lack of team spirit, but what it resulted in. Mediocre results. If he's a superstar without ever waving a towel in appreciation for his teammates, I'll be a big fan of his. Because, again, that's where the results lead me. And, of course, there are a whole host of possibilities in between, which will lead to varying degrees of appreciation by me.

What will never be a consideration to me is "Now what could Oden/the Blazers have been if Oden visibly cared more?" Maybe your worries are founded, maybe Oden's lack of visual interest shows a lesser dedication which leads him to be less than he could have been. Maybe even if he ends up a 25 PER player and a DPOY candidate, he could have been Shaq with great defense had he cared more. I don't care. One could always posit a player/team could have been more if only...something. It's really not of interest to me...what is of interest to me is what the player/team actually end up being/doing.

But saying results are all that matters is really not saying much at all when we're trying to figure out what will lead us to the results that we're trying to get.

Why are we trying to "figure that out?" We have no bearing on it. We're not coaches or team officials. If we were, then I would care, because my actions could change something. Since we're not part of the process, it doesn't seem relevant to me whether my attitude is conducive to problem-solving. We have no power to solve problems. Our role is to comment on what ends up happening. You can, of course, spend that commenting time on whatever you consider important...and you clearly consider this to be of some import. I just don't. I'm not really trying to convince you that it isn't important...I'm just explaining why it's not important to me.

Oden on Wheels at Work said he'll be back in Portland on Thursday.

Lets hope he gets to see some playoff games at the RG.

Does anyone know if Oden is on the playoff roster?

I don't think there are such things as "playoff rosters" any more.

Any player among the 15 can be deemed active or inactive jjust hours before tipoff.

Didn't the fact that Oden constantly apolgized to all of his teammates and the GM after both injuries indicate maybe he cares......even a little bit???? He kept saying he let everyone down, something out of his control. Seems like he cares to me. I think its funny to try and guess how much a guy cares when you don't even know him.

I gotta say it is a bit odd that hasn't been with the team. I know he's "rehabbing" at home on the couch, but damn man. Doesn't seem like he's close to anyone on the team. I guess being out of lineup 2 out of 3 years may do that to you, not really sure.

Man he's hopping around on one fucking leg up the stairs? Just what we need is him tumbling down the stairs backwards and tearing an ACL. Can anyone imagine watching a 7'0 285lb guy trying to hop up the stairs on one leg, it's ludicrous. And we think this guy is going to pick up where he left off earlier this season? He was timid as hell when he got hurt before. He probably won't trust his body again any sooner than us. Hopefully in the summer he can make some serious strides or we're screwed.

I think he would come in and out of the tunnel with the rest of his teammates. Honestly from where the players park to sitting behind the bench there are no stairs for Oden to hop up, down or fall from.

I heard Oden's interview on the The Game today on "The Greg Oden Show". He showed up late, and he had the personality of a burlap sack during his "show". As I've said earlier, get this guy some Xanax or Wellbutrin. I'm going to guess that Durant's playoff performance is putting even more pressure on this guy's apparent fragile psyche.

Informative interview. It sure is a coincidence that after all these months he will suddenly attend Game 6, barely in time before the season ends. I might think he has read criticism of his attendance, on this or another board--if I thought he ever read anything about basketball. He says he isn't doing any basketball things, and has had no communication with any of his teammates for months. He watched the game on national TV but got up while we were shooting so well in the 1st couple of minutes, spent time in the kitchen, didn't return till we were in trouble, and was surprised at how the game had turned around in the minutes he missed. He says he has no analysis to offer of the series. He is unable to refer to any specifics (of events or of what we should improve), which makes sense since he said in the previous interview that his only knowledge of games is from what his friends tell him (the ones interested enough to pay for TV, or at least to read the free boxscores and play-by-play on the internet).

I see no interest in his employer, although he gladly receives hundreds of thousands of dollars per month from Paul Allen. I have a question for you sympathizers who worry about how sweet and sensitive he is--have you ever held a job? Longer than it takes to get fired? How did you do it, with your anti-work ethic attitude?
