Nah, part of the Clippers value is the local TV contract. Lakers signed a TV deal worth $3 billion. Clips would be worth at least $1bill.

As for Merritt, it seems like he's done a pretty good job building a brand with the Timbers and understands sports management, so I assume some of those qualities would translate to owning an NBA team.
