Meyers Leonard, potential superstar

Meyers will make at least 2 really stupid decisions in every game he plays, but that's what folks remember..when he looks bad, it's really bad..he has improved defensively..he defended Lamarcus as good as anyone before the injury. He's got a lot of growing to do but with the right work ethic...I think he'll become a really solid player.

If Meyers is on track to be a "Superstar" then the word has ceased to hold any meaning whatsoever.

I typed something sarcastic when I first read this. Instead I'll just say that unless the Blazers use their brains and hire him a real coach to help him he will be a waste of talent.

Sabonis, Olajuwon, McHale, David Robinson or Ewing....someone like that to teach him how to use his natural talents. Pick somebody please.

You lost me at "agile defender" . He's slow and clumsy on defense and is terrible at rebounding, especially considering his size. He has pretty much no potential to be a superstar in my opinion. Mehmet Okur is his absolute best case scenario.

Okur was an All Star

well that's definitely the 'glass half full' side of things, OP

Im still on the #StartEdDavis bandwagon - Him and Plum lock things DOWN, we got more than enough scoring in 1-3 and the amount of 2nd chance options this duo gets means we get a decent amount of inside scoring as well. They put in work.

As I said in the summer, I am OK with a Plumlee/Davis starting rotation, but if you do that you need to start Crabbe over Aminu. You need 3 shooters in the game IMO.

Also I would not but too much credence in Meyers stats if he is playing the stretch PF. His stats will be skewered if he is not around the basket.

well thats the thing really isn't it. he's not going to start over Plumlee and if what we are seeing is his stretch PF game, i think we can live without it.

Interesting re Crabbe at starting SF, he's definitely getting better but there are still a ton of OMFG moments with him, but maybe they will lessen. I still think Aminu is our best bet at the moment based on all around skills.

"Superstar" and "Meyers" in the same sentence or paragraph is just wrong IMO. It'll never happen, if Meyers becomes a steady rotational player who can eventually play decent D and can rebound decently then we should be happy. Problem is I think Meyers is going to want to be paid 10-12 mil per yr this summer, I don't think he's worth that based upon what I currently see, just my opinion

Have never been able to understand why Leonard lacks a post game. What has he been doing all these years?

Just a few days ago someone was complaining that he doesn't back guys down when they put a small defender on him. Well, he did against MIN (video #3): http://on.nba.com/1TQYsD4
He continues to improve.

hard to believe we really need to point out times he has backed down a smaller defender....

Correct me if I'm wrong but wouldn't a superstar in the making usually get an immediate contract extension? Meyers didn't.

Now I didn't watch the Minnesota game, so he may have sucked. But going off the Indiana game, there's something I saw in Leonard that could in theory equate to greatness. I'll concede that it's extremely unlikely tho.

He's only 23 so he's still 3 years from being in his prime.
He has a good head on his shoulders.
He sees the floor well. You can run the offense through him.
He's a good passer, makes the right decisions most the time.
He has a great bullet pass.
He's a good shooter and a decent foul shooter. Good hands.
Agile defender, gets his hands in passing lanes.
Not a great rebounder, but good enough. I think he makes up for lack of rebounds with his quick hands.
He can shoot from anywhere around the perimeter, and he's showing improvement in the post.

The last point is the big one. If he can develop his low post game he would be a beast. I would like to see him gain about 10 pounds of muscle and practice playing physical. He's tough enough and agile enough to play a physical game. Add that to his current game and he's Aldridge 2.0, maybe better.

This post is all with my rose colored glasses on, but it's fun to think about.

I would gladly eat my words about him. A few years ago I thought he was worthless.
"Better," lol...

Leonard is a decent rebounder, he just defers to much. When Plums or Davis is playing, he gets too passive and lets them rebound. When he has played with Vonleh or Aminu (rare) he is much more aggressive at going after boards.

Overall he does need to develop a more aggressive attitude. Was it the last game or one before that he was posted up under the basket when Lillard lobbed him a pass, he pushed his defender off a little (called for offensive) and found himself all alone right under the hoop. Rather than making an easy dunk, he layed it up. That shows fundamental non-aggressiveness.

Most ppl ASSume that the "glass" is filled to whatever degree w/ water, w/ respects to this thread's topic, it's filled w/ something else:unsure:

I'm not a Meyers hater (never was & won't be; I think he's ok though ) but "Superstar...o_O"

Let's take baby steps; when/IF Meyers gets to "star," THEN we'll talk about his POTENTIAL to become a "Superstar."
