Trail Blazers broadcasters 'Mike & Mike' voted a top NBA TV duo
Trail Blazers television broadcasting team Mike Barrett and Mike Rice have been voted one of the NBA's best among local broadcasters,
according to a recent poll by sports media blog "Awful Announcing."
The site polled its readers for their opinions on each local broadcast team around the league, complete with weighted grades, to determine the best and worst crews the NBA has to offer.
The Mikes were voted as one of the best local broadcast teams, coming in at No. 8 out of 30:
Most popular grade: A (45.93% of voters)
Analysis: A lot of As — the third-highest raw total — for this unabashed homerific crew. Barrett and Rice, to their credit, work in top notch word play and funny anecdotes whenever possible. Blazers fans, known to poo-poo how little national media attention their team gets, showed up for their guys — good for them.
Reader comments: "I have always enjoyed the banter between Mike Barrett and Mike Rice. They have great energy together. It probably helps that they have worked with each other for a while too! They will crack jokes occasionally and i don't mind when broadcasters do that because it means that they are comfortable working together." – CUbsfan
The stylish duo of Mike Breen and Walt "Clyde" Frazier, who team up to call New York Knicks games,
earned the top spot, while the Houston Rockets broadcast crew – which includes former Blazers great Clyde Drexler – came in dead last:
Analysis: This crew's hideous marks are a reflection of their staunch homerism. According to Worrell, Drexler and Bullard, there's never been a justifiable call made against the Rockets. Ironically, the crew is anti-3-point-shot, even as Daryl Morey has grown Houston into the avatar of the analytic movement, fostering a "Get off my lawn" attitude to the entire broadcast.
