I've let this sink in over night, and it occurred to me that because I have been limited to few TV games a year, I haven't really gotten too attached to Mike and Mike. Most of the times when I DO get a chance to watch/listen to a game, it's been on the radio.

I don't like how they were let go, as like mediocre man, I'm not a real big fan of change, but I'll get over it. Hopefully they get a show locally (radio) and we can get our fix there.

Waiting for the new hires is the best way to go, imho. Although I'm hoping for the best case scenario, I'm expecting them to hire some re-tread or some schlub who isn't any good.

That's a shame. I really liked the Mikes. They were my familiar voice from home now that I no longer live in Portland.

I know that there were player coaches in the NBA in the past. Can we make CJ the first player-announcer?

Mic him up during playing time

They were let go with a year left on their contract. That was cool, actually. Gives them time to figure out rheir next step without panicking

Wow - crazy news! I haven't - and won't - read through this thread, but skimmed several posts to try to get the gist of what happened and what some general thoughts are.

I can't say I'm upset - I never particularly cared for M/M, but I never was turned off by them either...other than Rice's unwillingness to pronounce names correctly. But I am shocked. Seems like change for the sake of change, rather than something that's been well thought out and planned - but that's from the outside looking in.

One of my first thoughts for a replacement was Cool Nutz. I don't know if he has the chops to call a game, but if he did I think that'd be pretty awesome. And then I thought to pair Sheed up with him - we'd have the best duo in the league!

I wouldn't mind getting a years salary without having to do anything.

Maybe they finally realized Meyers best position.....behind a mic

Of course, instead of having home and away announcers, with Meyers there they'd need a different color guy for for defense. I can hear it now.....

play by play guy: And a tough rebound for Davis....Meyers?

Meyers: Not really sure what happened there? In my day getting pushed under the basket was usually the approach I took. Didn't like the hair to get messed up

Yeah, for everyone saying how awful it was handled, my guess is they probably wanted to make the move last summer. But with the exodus of players, recognized how badly it would be perceived. Gave them a two year extension, knowing full well they were basically paying them double for one year. But it gave them security for this season.
I still don't understand both why McGowan is awful, and how people expect to know in advance something like this is coming, but so be it. I grew to like rice. Harvey was terrible. Barrett, meh.

Of the four, the only one I would have liked to have kept was Barrett. Of course, I grew up with Schonz, so Wheeler's "fan" approach to calling the game has never sat well with me. When I can't see the game, I want someone who can paint an accurate picture of what's going on. Wheeler paints with emotion rather than fact. Harvey was a hot mess from the get-go. Besides, that guy will always be a L*ker to me. Rice was a character, but it was time for him to retire. Barrett I liked. He was certainly a homer, but also not afraid to tell us when things weren't going according to plan or who was not showing up that day.

I can't begin to guess why this move was made. I can't imagine money was an issue as I don't think those jobs pay incredibly well, so it had to be something else. I don't think it was a personal issue, because only one would have been gone rather than all three.

When you take over a team, not all the changes you want to make can be made at once. These were probably changes McGowan has wanted to make for a while, but was waiting for the right time. Of course, there is never a "right time" for these moves. It sucks for them, their families and the fans that liked them. My fear on the TV end is we'll get a ridiculous homer as the PBP guy (a Pete Pranica type) and a color guy who doesn't really understand the sport or how to translate it to those watching the game. They will view their job as selling a product rather than enlightening the viewer. As for radio, Wheeler and Harvey were tough to listen to before, like N'SYNC. As a solo act, he's going to be even worse as Justin Timberlake.

I think McGowan has a plan well in place, we just haven't been apprised of it yet. Firing those three without an idea of what or who is going to replace them seems reckless and out of character for him.

Anyway, that's my $0.02.

And for those who want Walton or Snapper, I think both are too old to keep up with the travel schedule.

im sad, but over it. Moving on. Who are the replacements? Let greet them with welcome arms please! I don't want to see the replacements get the cold shoulder because of the M's. They are not the ones responsible, so I sure hope we are kind to them.

Fuck that shit. Lets boo everyone on opening night not playing on the floor.

I may go to Summer League and hold up a Free Mike and Mike sign. :MARIS61:

I know your joking, but I really hope we don't boo the newbies the way HCP does around here. Seriously. We are looking to try to swing big in FA over the next couple years and we don't want to come off as a "hater" fan base. It will turn these guys off.
We have to take the high road and welcome the new ones with open arms.

It's been stated here a couple of times, and it makes total sense that they would target the Seattle audience, from a business sense, no matter what Portland fans think. When the Seahawks started being successful they flooded the Portland market with everything Seahawks, Paul Allen is the common denominator here. Nothing goes on without his approval, and I find it interesting that people aren't as mad at him as they are McGowan.

We get upset that we can't bring in top tier players, but get upset when it seems the team is trying to expand its brand that can change the landscape immensely. A finicky bunch we are.

I really like The Mikes, they have been here for so long that they became as important as the team itself, in a sense. But business is business, and the only constant in the universe is change. Do I agree with how it seems to have been handled? No. But being upset isn't going to change a thing, and I think once the dust settles, and we're able to look at the bigger picture, I think we're going to find that this is all happening for a good reason.

Nah, fuck that shit. its how any fan base would react. I hope McGowan addresses the fans on opening night and gets booed off the floor.

I just really hope it's not a Seattle guy. Portland is not a south Seattle suburb. I really hope the front office has enough of a clue to get the pulse of this city

Schonz was a Seattle guy. He called hockey and baseball games in Seattle for 14 years before he started calling Blazer games. I guess Harry Glickman was also clueless about the pulse of this city, too. Thank god he was.

Nah, The new guys have nothing to do with this and should not be booed. At all.

Read Red Rooster above. He is spot on. Just have to look at it with as wide angle lens and see the big picture.

Hell, Weinberg was from NY, went to school in Arizona and LA! And lived in LA before he owned the team!?

That proves it, this team has always wanted to move the team to LA AND Seattle!

But how can you say that when you dont know who the replacements are yet. Many in town I have already heard said that Barrett was too bland. The one guy that people are the most mad about is also considered the most bland when people are critics of him.

Just saying its not wise to judge without knowing the result. :)

Because I'm a dick?

They have to prove themselves, I'm not giving them any chance or leeway.
