Politics Military is coming to Portland, Trump authorizes “full force” if needed

Is there any reason why Portland police could not have arrested this woman?

Trump is setting up special National Guard units to deploy in cities. He claims, contra the law, he can send Army, Navy, Air Force and Marines to cities to, I don't know, intimidate voters on election day?

That is a single incident. Not a mob that would require being put down by the military.
But police arrested 60+. Which is it? Single incident or 60+. That also happens to be one of dozens of federal arrests/charges.

They weren’t there. That’s the point. If the police protected the property, it would be them using (or not) pepper balls and tear gas and any other riot measures.

Like I originally wrote, when governors of two states refused (and blocked) to allow integration of public schools, the feds called up the national guard. Racist a-holes didn’t like that. States rights advocates didn’t either. But when the local government won’t follow the laws (or hinder their execution), the feds have precedent to do so - and the law on their side.

I would say a governor literally standing in the doorway of a high school to block entrance by black kids is insurrection.

I would add that the police can arrest ICE officials who beat innocent bystanders. It’s assault & battery.

He likely won’t be allowed to send in federal troops. It violates the posse comatitus act.

The only rational argument for doing so is that the illegal immigrants are enemy invaders, but I don’t think the courts will buy that argument.

I have a good friend who worked 30 years in the prison system. He says a lot of those hispanic prisoners are very bad people, and dangerous.

60+ over 5 months, right? So like 1 person every few days... why would the national guard be needed to handle that kind of volume?

Create confrontation by sending federal troops against wishes of governor, mayor, police chief.
Say confrontation proves federal troops needed.

Terrible logic.

At any time, any one person can cause harm to life and property.

It’s more likely because it’s already happened.

That’s what was argued in the appeals court hearing. You might want to read the many pages, page after page, of actions that led them to feel the need for more defense.

If you want, I can paste them all here, or you can read the court ruling.

Start on page 4 and continues through page 16. Including bomb threats.

And the white prisoners are good people and not dangerous?

Why do you think 70 soldiers are needed to defend a single building? Especially given that ICE and CBP and probably other varieties of feds are already onsite and are completely happy to beat up citizens themselves.

barfo

That’s the number they determined it takes. As it is, when the protests have been unruly, they have to call in off duty personnel and assign others to defend the building and ICE guys.

I’m sure they’re only taking physical actions when there’s a real threat.
[/QUOTE]

Like when the "threat" is standing across a line, protesting as is their first amendement right, and gets pulled in by an officer? Like that?

Or when an ambulance is coming through with a person who needs to go to the hospital, and they threaten the paramedic? LIke that?

Like when NOTHING is happening for hours and hours, hell even days (which you have seen) and then the only videos of violence has NOT been because of the protestors (Which by your stance you clearly have seen, but are misguided)

Honest question: Did you think Portland was a warzone before this all happened? Did you? Did you think it was necessary BEFORE the videos of ANYTHING happened?

No, because they WANTED TO CREATE IT TO JUSTIFY IT. It never EVEN CAME CLOSE to being justified. EVER. And its bullshit if you believe it does. I fucking live here. IT WAS NEVER A FUCKING WARZONE.

Be smarter than that.

I like the website more when Denny Crane isn’t posting. When he posts, we all have to stand around explaining things to him instead of having a more interesting conversation.

Yeah that reads like a bunch of lies. It sounds like Trump is making things up in his head and his attorneys are making it sound better and writing it down.

This sounds so much like the "one death is too many" argument people make about so many things. Talk about terrible logic.

Leads to one person might kill somebody so we have to live under authoritarian rule to keep everyone safe and nobody can have any freedom. Unless they have enough money.

San Francisco man charged with felony assault on officer had case thrown out by judge when video clearly showed he wasn't the one doing assaulting.

Thank God Merkley has been stepping up and at least trying to bring receipts. Our Senator from NY (Wyden) is doing his usual whining and handwringing while doing his best not to piss off his donors. Jeff might not be the most powerful orator but he’s definitely on the right side…..

Confused. Why are they saying it’s ok one week, then a different court over rules and then another court changes their decision? How many times can this go to court?

Immigration officers detained a McMinnville High School student Friday off school grounds, the student’s family said.

Christian Jimenez, 17, a U.S. citizen born in Newberg and a high school senior, was driving his father’s car around 12:30 p.m. during his lunch break when U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement officers stopped his car, Jimenez’s older brother, Cesar Jimenez, said in an interview.

The teenager told the officers he was a U.S. citizen, but an officer proceeded to break the car’s driver’s side window and detain him. In a video shared by Cesar Jimenez, the boy can be heard telling an officer that he is a citizen, to which the officer replies, “Get out of the car” and “I don’t care.”

Christian Jimenez was transported to the ICE facility in South Portland and was released shortly before 7 p.m. on Friday, his brother said. Authorities are trying to charge his brother with “interference or obstruction of investigation,” Cesar Jimenez said.

Right-wing reporter preps $10M federal suit alleging ‘culture of political discrimination’ by Portland police

A right-wing independent journalist is leveraging his short-lived arrest in a bid to put the Portland Police Bureau on trial — alleging a deep-seated bias by the bureau’s top brass against conservatives.

A warning of litigation filed Thursday says the influencer, Nick Sortor, will proceed with a $10 million federal civil rights lawsuit against the city over his arrest outside a U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement field office in South Portland.

“The city of Portland and its police department maintain a long-standing pattern and practice of hostility toward conservative political viewpoints, and demonstrable tolerance, sympathy or coordination with Antifa,” the tort claim notice says.

Sortor, 27, was held in the downtown county jail overnight Oct. 2 on suspicion of second-degree disorderly conduct, a misdemeanor, after his arrest at an ICE protest.

The Multnomah County District Attorney’s Office dropped the case four days later, saying that black-clad protesters had pushed Sortor into a drainage planter during a confrontation over the influencer’s combative coverage.

The prosecutor’s memo determined Sortor was defending himself, but supported the actions of responding patrol officers, saying they were working without access to surveillance footage and had probable cause to arrest him at the time.

In a Tuesday interview, civil attorney D. Angus Lee said the suit will seek punitive damages against the city for allegedly violating Sortor’s rights under the Fourth Amendment.

Known as a Monell claim, the suit seeks damages not only for harms allegedly suffered that night, but also to punish the city for its “unspoken policy” of targeting conservatives.

“There are many frontline officers at the Portland Police Bureau who have been effectively pressured by the culture that comes from the top down,” Lee said. “When those frontline officers are under oath in depositions, they’re going to tell us the truth about what is going on.”

Police officials have repeatedly denied accusations of political discrimination, and such charges of hidden sympathies might seem risible to the crowds that made law enforcement the target of their ire during the city’s mass unrest in 2020 and 2021.

Harmeet K. Dhillon, who heads the civil rights division at the U.S. Department of Justice, vowed to launch her own investigation in the wake of Sortor’s arrest. Lee submitted a memorandum to Dhillon in November cataloging various cases of alleged viewpoint discrimination, though many of them happened years ago under different political leadership.

Sortor, who lives in Washington, D.C., has been convicted of driving under the influence in Kentucky, his home state, and was also once arrested for menacing a police officer, the Lexington Herald-Leader recently reported.

He violated the terms of probation in a criminal mischief case, the paper reported, and faces arrest if he returns home.

Lee said he was unaware of the criminal case and said it had no bearing on the matter.

Portland’s ICE protests became a national headline when President Donald Trump announced he was deploying the National Guard and authorizing “full force” in the city on Sept. 27, quickly attracting more demonstrators and dozens of influencers hoping to document chaos.

Trump’s deployment has stalled on legal fronts, while Portland’s rainy season has largely dispersed protesters from outside ICE. The livestreamers have all gone home — at least for now.

City Attorney Robert Taylor and Mike Benner, a spokesperson for the Portland Police Bureau, declined to comment.

A guy with long criminal history says he was persecuted when arrested.
Only thing stupider is federal Civil Whites division taking it seriously.
