@tlongII is basically on record as saying that baseball will never come here. Even if it somehow happens (s)he thinks it will undoubtedly fail. There has been comments like that throughout this whole thread.
He/She has that right. Maybe wants it to happen but is just afraid to jinx it in any way? Maybe just figures no and will be happy when it works?

I thought that too at first but no they are strongly opinionated that baseball will never work here in Portland.

That’s odd.. any sport will work here. Especially from the big 4 (nba, nhl, mlb, nfl)

Even freaking woman’s soccer works here. For whatever reason the northwest and sports works really well

Baseball attendance is on a down turn right now. It's a sport for old people and families......if concessions are priced ok. Attendance has either gone down or been stagnant for 11 years. Down about 4k per game since 2007. I love baseball, but I'm not sure the sport itself can thrive, much less in Portland.

Just under 30k per game for 81 games.

If you had to choose between MLB or MLS in town which would you prefer?

If you could attend one or the other on a nice July night which one would you attend, MLS or MLB game?

I'd choose MLB over MLS.
I like soccer, but would attend a MLB game first. Its as American tradition as it gets, for me. Its important we keep this traditions!

Maybe this City could support both?

I agree. I'd go MLB over MLS.

I don't think we have any questions about supporting MLS. Ya can't even get a line on season tickets for Timbers. All Baseball needs is another huge season like they had with McGuire in 98 and it becomes a big deal again. Bound to happen. The records only stand for so long and then it becomes news.

KJ, whats your feelings on if the stadium should have a retractable cover? Would it be worth the added cost?

I know I'm not KJ, but, why wouldn't you have a retractable cover?
Maybe it will, just that the plans that were shown in the paper didn't show one and I think its was addressed that they felt no need for one based on weather here.

It rains here in april and may, enough said. lol.

Barrett and Cheeks have said any Portland MLB stadium would have a retractable roof in order to ensure that games are never postponed. Which is something they feel is necessary in a small market. They even bragged that they have a never before seen retractable roof system that will be part of the project.

? first they say there will be one then brag they never seen one as part of the project?

They plan a new type of retractable roof that has never been done before. The pictures that leaked out from a private meeting showed a transparent roof or cover of some sort. Are these the same pictures that you saw? I can see how it can be missed on a first glance.

Correct. And I don't believe the money is there.

I would choose MLS. MLB plays too many games.

That's a cool looking stadium...to see Guns 'n Roses* play in!
Doesn't matter how cool it is if boring baseball is being played in it.

*Not sure why, but GnR is what immediately pops to mind when thinking about arena shows.

I would choose MLS as well. In the 18 years I have been here in Oregon/Washington, I have maybe went to three Mariner games. Have been to maybe 10-15 Beaver or Hops games. Cannot remember anything about those games. MLS has provided plenty of memories.

Apparently those photos are pics of just one of several designs.

Correct. And I don't believe the money is there.

I think too much effort had been put in and to much buy in by the right people has been exhibited for the money not to be there. The commissioner of baseball, the mayor of Portland, a handful of celebrities, and famous athletes. I have no reason to not believe they are legit. The old rumor is that it is money from Asia. I hope it's a Japanese company.

I don't know how baseball would do here really. If it was still the 80's and 90's when there was some youthful interest in the game, I could see them selling it with a successful marketting campaign. But there can't be an emerging market for baseball without widespread fan approval or or immediate success to get the butts in the seats. Plus, Portland is a trendy AF place, sports wise, and wants to be seen as such. The odds that a large amount of people here would spend money to see a sport their peers despise? (shakes head.)

In contrast, soccer is bright shiny new and (most importantly)
Ding, ding, ding..... NOT AMERICAN. No wonder it went over so well in Portland. Baseball, represents the Dodo Bird of sports entertainment. Even I've forgotten what was fun about the sport in the passage of time. And tell you the honest truth, I'd rather we tried to snag a rogue NHL franchise now that Seattle is getting one. That makes the NW a legitimate player in pro hockey.

I was thinking more of a Franklin Graham Crusade!

I want to see a Red Sea Redemption II Ad where the cowboy goes stalking through the baseball field during a game and blows it up. Make it part of the next expansion pack. Kids would be posting videos on Reddit till the cows came home.

They would need a dynamic marketing campaign focused on the family and baseball as a great form of entertainment.

Watching paint dry or grass grow.. damn that’s tough

I'd have to go back and read some of Peter Gammons old books to figure out why I used to watch baseball. For the life of me I can't remember why.
