They won't.

They're terrified of pissing off their base by combatting the issues with crime/homeless camps and the riots.
There is only one option, according to the courts. We have to house them. Even nice apartments costs less than allowing them to remain homeless. The problem is that voters don't want to believe that.

It will not change until the court changes it's ruling or we offer the homeless housing they find preferable to living on the streets.

Until we do that we lose.

I have to ask, and I do not presume to know the answer: If the voters and the city decide to fund housing the homeless in Portland, will it just be the ~5000 we have presently, or will that then extend to unhoused in other cities who move here, or even those who are currently paying for their own apartments but would rather the city foot the bill?

Well, that's the thing. The way the court ruled we have to provide shelter for our local homeless population. So if we did that and others moved here we could theoretically resume our anti-homeless tactics on the new ones.

I'm not sure that we would, but we could.

No, you wouldn't be able to just stop paying for an apartment. There are many ways to avoid this. There would be case workers visiting every home regularly.

People who are capable would be obvious and would be required to pay 1/3 of their income for rent.

It would very quickly become less desirable than just having your own place and paying your own rent.

Salt Lake city virtually ended homelessness while their housing first program was running, but once the program ended the homeless problem returned. They were spending $8k per year for their homeless during the program and now it's more like $30k.

Why and how does anyone think Portland will get an expansion team?
Hasn't Selig mentioned Portland specifically before?

Why wouldn't you think we could get one? Have you been to Portland lately? We have a ton of people here now and we are one of the highest media markets without two professional teams of the big three sports.

I am in Portland often.

Homelessness
Riots

complete lack of interest

Portland took a pretty big hit in terms of perception with all the riots.
Might as well not put a team in Vegas or an NBA team in Seattle either.

Homelessness is a problem everywhere.

Lets pull up teams in California. No chance anyone will ever feel comfortable going to those games either.

Been zero movement on a stadium or site selection. This all started a few years back and I know covid, but just seems like zip synergy about bringing MLB to town?

Portland was kinda the lightning rod for all the BLM protests though. Certain news networks made it sound like the entire city was burning. I don't think that perception has left people's minds. I heard we lost a lot of conventions.

Its on the upswing since 2020.

Using the BLM riots as an excuse is sooo 2020.

That said, the grifters at the Diamond Project are running out of new things to shill.

Grifters? Huh? Mike Barrett seems like a pretty upstanding guy. Their plans seemed legit. What are you referring to?

That was years ago

They've only sold hats. Their Terminal 2 plan was an absolute joke.
