OT MLB to PDX: We're talking baseball to PDX

Yup, born and raised. I went to Oregon State for college but other than that I've lived in the Portland Metro Area my whole life. I'm a die hard 49ers fan though. I don't know how I can just turn that off for another team. The Reds would be a little easier since they are further away and I'm not as emotionally invested with them as I am the 49ers and Blazers.

Two places have been prominently mentioned in the past, Delta Park and SE Portland. I've never seen anyone mention prime real estate on the banks of the Willamette in downtown SW Portland.

Of course, it would be primo if anyone could afford the property.

I'm an Oregon sports fan so I'd immediately defect from the Mariners. I already feel bad cheering for a Seattle team, so it'd be very easy.

Charlotte has been pushing for a team for quite a while. Montreal already has a stadium and they pull in tons of crowds for exhibitions. (Since they really kind of got screwed out of losing the Expos.) Not saying we can't beat these towns for a team, but we would have to have no roadblocks to getting a stadium in place. Then getting a team would be quite doable.

While I don’t necessarily think Portland should get a baseball team over any of these cities, some of those cities have multiple major-league sports franchises and/or are an important part of other cities’ territories (like in MLB, we are part of M’s territory, LOL). NBA and NFL are superior draws than MLB, which is still struggling with attendance in some major markets. Just the size of a city itself is not going to be the driving force in where MLB lands next.

How much of the attendance issue is because of the long schedule? It’s hard to fill a 30k+ seat venue 81 days out of the year.

That may be, but some teams struggle with attendance while others do not. Look at the A’s, Marlins, Rays, etc. there’s a reason these franchises come into mention for relocation.

It would take time for Mariners fans to jump over to a new franchise in Portland....we can fill a soccer stadium, I don't see a problem with baseball...we need a good weather sport here

I agree, which is why I think Portland would be well off to make a small ballpark if we did land a team. Something close to the size of the Ballpark in Omaha that they use for the CWS.

Let’s be honest though, the nba is fair weather as well. I remember seeing the rose garden with maybe 5000 fans in attendance when I was a kid.

Baseball is extremely popular in that part of the country. The only baseball popular in PDX is with Beaver fans and maybe a few Mariners fans.

Shit. I hear from friends and neighbors that they dont give a shit about baseball. We dont even have a Double A club in the state. I mean. It would nice if we had a team. But I am not going to pretend Portland is a prime spot for locating a franchise.
