You are fucking exhausting. Notice i said club would be for the offseason. She (his granddaughter) can play for her school during the season and do whatever club she wants in the offseason. If she’s good enough, that’ll be enough. Which it will be.

Doesn't work like that anymore. You have to find and contact the coaches yourself or pay somebody to do it.

The exception being if you're one of the top few players in the country.

But if you plan on being one of those players and don't do your work (contacting coaches) you'll almost certainly wind up in a less than great situation.

You almost have to make deals with the HS coaches now to make sure a college will see you.

Unfortunately true. Many HS coaches have their favorites (and might not even care about winning). Or they have ambitions of being higher level coaches and do all kinds of under handed shit to try and win big.

They make deals with other coaches to vote on their favorite players for conference honors, etc.

If you aren't a favorite you have to be incredibly good so that the other coaches vote for you even if your coach isn't advocating for you.

But not making deals and just playing it up front and straight up. Just trying to get by on being a good student and good teammate and good player can really bite you in the butt if you aren't kissing the coach's ass or have a deal with the coach. Depending on your coach. Teams are desperate for coaches, and that's why there are unfortunately so many of these bad coaches who stick around.

That's how my eldest became starting post for one of the most storied programs in Oregon girls basketball at 5'3 and 115 lbs. And how my three daughters were never allowed to be on the same team in HS practice. And even though they were probably three of the best six players on the team were never allowed to be on the court at the same time in a game (people would have seen how much better we were and they would have had to play them ahead of their pets).

There were kids who had been kissing up to the coach since grade school and the coach was trying to convince them they were as good as my daughters.

The one time in practice they were allowed to be on the same team was when my youngest was a freshman and they destroyed the team which had all of the other starters. I believe the score was like 36 to 10.

Though, my daughters did have the girl who should have been our starting post, who was the backup to my daughter. This girl was a legit athletic 6-footer who was nearly unstoppable going right and a rebounding machine. Coming off the bench behind a 5'3 115 lb PG who was being forced to play post.

That girl was legitimately the second best post in the conference (maybe the best on a good day). She started at post for her college team, and my daughter started as point guard for her college team. Both their freshman year.

The coach was pissed about her favorites losing to the Carns girls and backups and JV players. Chewing the other starters out for giving up because "they should know that they are every bit as good".

Even though my youngest daughter was on JV2. My middle daughter was on JV. And my eldest wasn't even good enough to play point guard for us (even though none of the other players on the team could score on her or guard her, and our offense ran far better with her at PG). And we couldn't compete unless she was on the court. Even if she were on the court as a post.

My daughters went back to watch that practice on Hudle that night. But it had strangely been deleted... Just like the video of the high school coach calling the whole team losers and storming out was immediately deleted.

Super glad we have a new coach.

The lesson has been learned, though. We need to get better at kissing ass.

Well, if you need practice, I'm sure there are plenty of posters here whose asses you could start kissing.

To be totally honest FAMS….of the main sports out there, high school coaches have no impact whatsoever in the college recruiting process other than football.

It is bullshit actually, the HS sports scene. My daughter didn’t get player of the year her senior year simply because the previous 3 girls were from our school. They got tons of heat for the 3 years in a row. So they purposely gave it to an undeserving kid. Had coaches from other HS reach out to me and out daughter to apologize. Said there was tons of politics about it. They didn’t like the club girls killing these basically recreational kids. I was HEATED. O-Live actually called out the voting process that year in a tweet. COuldn’t believe it. My bother and his son are now entering the AAU world and we went to a game and let me tell you FAMS…..SO glad we are no longer a part of that!

You are angry at me for my views on college recruiting. I hope with this mentality you aren’t trying to get somebody recruited to play at that next level. They’ll be filling my gas tank by next spring.

My sister had to deal with politics/favoritism her senior year in HS. She was the best hitter on her softball team, and iirc, won the batting title or something like that her sophomore and Jr years. All throughout playing softball, she was arguably the best player on all of her teams, both offensively and defensively.

But her senior year, the coach at her HS demoted her to JV (which was unheard of for a SR). But my sister took it in stride, and played so well that the coach had no choice but to promote her. But she relegated her to DH. She ended up winning the batting title again, and every single parent of a kid on the team (who knew my sister) was pissed at the coach.

She ended up winning some award (I don't remember, this was like 35 years ago), but it ruined my sisters love of softball. There was never a reason presented to my sister from the coach or any of the coaching staff, and my parents were both very passive about supporting my sister.

The main thing I remember from that year was that someone who was a freshman like I was, made Varsity (as a catcher). Holy shit was she a smoke show...anyways, it was kinda unheard of for a freshman to make the varsity, but she was really good.

IIRC, there was a group on FB that talked about said coach, and not a single person liked her, and in a lot of cases, said she killed their love for Softball and sports much in the same way she did to my sister.

She was my freshman math teacher, and I will say she didn't do anything for my love for math. I already hated it, but she didn't do anything to help.

Agreed. My daughter and the very good post she started ahead of both went to better, more competitive college teams than all of the players that were playing ahead of them in their same class for OCHS.

In fact in some sports, the club coaches beg the kids to not even PLAY for their high school teams.
This has been my experience with every single club coach we've played for. They have all begged us to switch away from the High School. Some even demanded it.

But we grew up here. That's our team. So we went with a different club.

I went to the park with my two year old son today and there was nobody playing hoops on the blacktop. There was a pair of kids playing catch in the big open field though. One of the kids had a pretty good arm.

Unfortunately for you, masturbation is not a collegiate sport.

Really? DAMN IT!

All this time I spent practicing, wasted. I was really, really good at it. Everyone said so.

"Wanna go to a party?" "Want to take me to the dance?"
"Nah, I gotta be in the gym, masturbating"

And all for what?

That was kind of my point. Certainly was that way with my nephew last year. The HS coach begged him to play but he wanted to get seen. So he set up a deal to make sure some coaches would see him play. Then agreed to play for the school.

So you know the Warnock girls.

I went to school with Sarah Warnock. She was a couple grades ahead of me. Very moving story. And she could hang out there. And doing it with MS was just incredible.

But no, I don't know them. Not many of the people who were part of those great teams have much to do with the team anymore.

Kristen Forristall has been around some. My daughters have coached Lindsey Yamasaki's kids at a few Brad Smith camps. And Brad is still at those camps as well. But he hasn't been around the team at all for years. About a year after our ex coach took over he stopped coming around.

I still see him around at 3x3 tournaments and stuff. But I try not to bother him unless he looks like he wants to talk to me. We know each other by name and he knows my daughters. They always run up and give him hugs and talk to him.

He's an amazing guy. He knew my name and tapped my shoulder at a 3x3 tournament before I realized he knew I existed. He's just that way.

The Warnock family are probably my closest family friends. I grew up two houses down from her father. My father had MS also and there was a bond between them. I was in her parents wedding.
Sarah and Claire went to Montana and I think Brad is up there now as well? That is a guess?

I think Brad is still in OC unless he's moved in the last few months.

I remember watching Sarah was very inspiring.

Big time. Tons of push back for my girls playing club. Even had a trainer/coach tell them they shouldn't work with anybody outside the program.

And text my wife and I later that night to admonish us for having our kids go to tryouts.
