My theory on why we sold the pick

PA has always been a pick buyer, not a seller, so why sell the pick this year?

First, no player fell that they NEEDED to grab. So, instead they sell the pick. The same offseason, Batum is a RFA and the blazers plan on matching what other teams offer. But, Allen has always been known to spend and does not want to overspend in this new CBA.

One worry is that some team will make a huge offer to batum knowing that the blazers will match and be stuck with a bad contract. by selling the pick, it signals to the rest of the league that PA is more frugle now and that they should not make an offer just to screw the blazers, because PA might just stick them with the contract.

Whatever the reason was it sounded pre-determined. Just like Mike Barrett knew we would pick Leonard, he also knew we would try to get rid of our 2nd round picks. He even mentioned dumping both. Maybe Barton being available changed that. But for what ever reason they did not want both those second round picks. I doubt PA was a factor in that strategy.

Don't forget wasted $$ in amnestying Roy. I'm not exactly sure how much $$ insurance is picking up, but I can't imagine it was free.

This used to be more common. A trade happens, and then another transaction happens post-draft to UNOFFICIALLY "complete" the trade.

This is probably what happened here. Otherwise, we would have at least gotten a future 2nd.

sold the pick b/c we didn't need it. overloaded with young, unproven talent. stashing for future draft picks is similarly worthless, the cash was probably just better to have.

Yes this is what I think. With the two euros and 3 new rookies are roster is at 13. We have tons of cap space and afterwards a room exception. There would be very little chance two second rounders could make the 15 man roster.

The Blazers have been aggressive in the past so teams might be thinking about messing with the Blazers. It might just make a GM stop and think again about the offer. Also, if roster issue was a problem, wouldn't it been much more like PA to trade the second round pick and cash for a higher second round next year?

OK . . . it's a stretch. But the way I see it, it's always good to have GOD on your side.
