There is nothing wrong with being loyal and not winning a ring. Stockton gets nothing but respect for a reason.

Durant... He's just another mercenary... If he goes to a team ready to win he'll win. If not, he won't.

A starting deal around 28 mil is not outrageous at all.

He'd be around the 45th highest paid player in the league. And I think his production would be in-line with that number.

Unfortunately, the issue for us would still be our lack of wing depth and depending on what we give up to land Ayton, we might not have enough assets/flexibility to land the kinda two-way swing guys we desperately need.

The 'price being outrageous' is very subjective.

I'm guessing I'll consider what Ayton gets in FA as being outrageous.
 
The 'price not being outrageous' was referring to something else. I don't like $28M for Grant in the least.
 
Portland doesn't get fancy things, so he'll end up in Detroit who will give up a truck load

Detroit can sign him outright. i don't think Phoenix can expect much in return for a S&T. And given the turmoil between the player and the coach/FO, I don't think Ayton really cares much about helping the Suns.

Detroit can only manage ~$26M in cap space if they renounce Bagley.
With a Grant to Portland trade, they would be able to get an additional ~$20M
Ayton would get ~$32M & Detroit would have ~$14M to fill out the last roster spot.

Maybe that's what we're counting on. We make him an offer that's as good as Detroits and hope that he likes us enough to go to the Suns and tell them that he'll either go to the Pistons for nothing or they can S&T him to us for something... that something wouldn't have to be too painful for us in that situation.

Max Detroit can get (even with renouncing Bagley) is ~$26M.

That may be enough, but I'm guessing Ayton is going to want something closer to the max ~$31M.
 
well maybe we would have some leverage in offering out TPE for Grant, so they get a lot more cap, works for me, offer them less than whats being tossed around

That has been my argument for a month. It is laughable to think we will give them #7. They really want that extra cap space. Sure someone could outbid us for Grant, but IMO they will take less than what has been reported.

ok then, say they pay Bagley 15M. Pistons are now at 101M in salary. The rookie scale for the 5th pick will be around 7M. So that puts the Pistons at 108M with a 121-122M cap. meaning they'd have 13-14M in space, probably half of what Ayton wants. It's not as easily done as you imagine

maybe Cronin is playing 3D chess (yeah, I know...Ha!) and the reported Blazer interest in Ayton is a leverage play by Cronin to try and convince the Pistons to trade #5 and Grant for #7 and the Milwaukee pick. Pistons would dump 23M in salary (Grant + difference between 5 & 7), still have a high lottery pick, resign Bagley, and have enough space to sign Ayton

otherwise, they have to renounce the rights to Bagley or find another avenue to cap-space

5. The Trail Blazers Want a Star
League sources say the Blazers are exploring trades for veterans who can help Damian Lillard lead the team back to the postseason. The Blazers have the seventh pick in the draft, so that’s their most obvious asset to use in potential deals. But they also have a bunch of young players that could be used in trades to accomplish the same goal. On top of that, Portland also pathways to create max space to sign a major free agent outright.

Bradley Beal and Zach LaVine are potential targets, according to sources. Lillard befriended Beal through their experience with Team USA, and the Wizards star has a player option for next season. So he could make his way to Portland either as a free agent or via trade. Though Beal and LaVine present some similar defensive issues as CJ McCollum did next to Lillard, either of them would undeniably make the Blazers better with their shot-creation.

Sources say another player to keep in mind is Hornets forward Miles Bridges. Pistons forward Jerami Grant is often mentioned as a target for the Blazers, but the same logic applies for Bridges. Much like Grant, Portland desires a wing who can provide versatility on the wing plus secondary scoring. The difference is that Bridges is a restricted free agent while Grant is under contract.

One other player frequently mentioned to be on Portland’s radar is Atlanta’s John Collins, who is a lob threat that could provide more defensive versatility than Jusuf Nurkic.

The Blazers have a surprising amount of ways to pursue big names aside from dealing their lottery pick. They have a $20.8 million trade exception, Eric Bledsoe’s lightly guaranteed contract ($3.9 million), a rising talent in Josh Hart, and future picks. There’s also a potential sign-and-trade with Nurkic, or more drastically, flipping Anfernee Simons, a 22-year-old coming off a career-best season and entering restricted free agency.

All of these players and assets could be used to acquire a star, or multiple pieces. The Blazers won only 27 games last season and Lillard is coming off abdominal surgery. But the front office is chasing big fish, so there’s at least one silver lining.

Ive felt for a while that they could move up with Detroit as the player they probably want will be there at 5. Or they could deal with Sac for 4.
I think they want Murray or Ivey at 4/5?
