I'm sure you all agree, since most are against subsidies, but I wanted to post this anyways.

Rep. Betty McCollum says her work could save U.S. taxpayers tens of millions of dollars. But Defense Department officials and lawmakers from NASCAR country say that the sponsorships help military recruitment and that the tax breaks could save jobs in the struggling economy.

I think it's stupid, but it's no different than TV advertisements for government programs or USPS sponsoring a cycling team.

My issue, however, is that everyone needs to tighten their belts, so I'm in favor of getting rid of anything that isn't necessary for the government.

It's actually a "Stimulus", since the sponsorship is helping to keep the NASCAR industry alive and people employed, which in turn generates tax revenue.

I'd rather government agencies spend money on private business sponsorships than bailing out state budgets, but that's JMO.

It's a tax break, extended for another 2 years by the Republicans in their December "Bloat the Budget" triumph over Obama.

Racetrack owners received tax breaks worth $45 million in 2010 and 2011, aimed at helping them make improvements to their facilities. A two-year extension of the program was included in the tax cuts compromise that President Obama forged with Congress in December.
