Is the NBA starting to treat the NBA All Star Game locations like the Superbowl?

Since 2004, these are the cities that have hosted it.

LA
Denver
Houston
Las Vegas
New Orleans
Phoenix
Arlington/Dallas
LA
Orlando
Houston
New Orleans

So...since 2004 LA has had it twice, Houston has had it twice, New Orleans will have had it twice once next years game is done.

Not saying Portland should get it or whatever (that ship sailed a long long time ago), but it's pretty obvious that the ASG has become more about outright making money (LA twice in 7 years, Houston twice in 7 years, New Orleans twice in 6 years)...

Did they make an announcement that i missed that they're just going to rotate the ASG between a few cities?

I don't get the appeal of NO.

Maybe they want to keep it in a warm city?

It's a big party, certainly about making money. What else is it supposed to be about?

I don't know. They already went there to help make the city not feel bad about itself, whats the draw of the 2nd time?

Having enough hotels just gets you on the list to be considered. How they decide (when 20 of the 30 teams have enough hotel rooms) is the big question.

All star weekend is colloquially known as black thanksgiving or blacksgiving...hence the new orleans appeal.

The appeal of New Orleans is that the entire city's infrastructure is based on the tourism industry. There are very few places in the country that are better equipped to house, feed, and entertain the amount of people that an event like the All-Star game brings in.

It's funny that you say it's to "not make the city feel bad about itself," when roughly a million tourists are in the city as you post that, enjoying Mardi Gras. The city has been, and always will be about tourism.

300 years ago the French founded a tourist town. They located it at the mouth of the Mississippi so they could decorate it as a fake port.

I've never heard anyone say, "I want to vacation in Portland!"

I'm sure Portland has some charm, as does Cleveland, Minneapolis, and Charlotte.

...but make no mistake, your city is not a destination for anyone but self-righteous liberals and hipsters.

Did you seriously just fuckin compare Portland to Cleveland, Minneapolis, or Charlotte? You obviously don't know shit about our city.

I have had a chance to visit NO on several occasions since moving to Texas, and it is a blast. I can easily see the appeal

This.

And frankly I think the All-star game and the Superbowl (or any big event during the winter) should be held in warm, tourist friendly cities. It's supposed to be a reward for everyone involved.

FTFY

Cleveland, Minneapolis and Charlotte are all great. What is the problem?

not sure how my comment created this penis measuring contest between cities.

The NBA wanted to help make New Orleans recover from Katrina (and show their support for them and the franchise). No where did I make fun of New Orleans or compare it to Portland or any other city.

Too late!

It has more to do with cities the players want to visit, and the celebrities who go to the game, than it does about spreading it around.

I think they should have it in Vegas every year.

I also think that the 2005 game in Denver was a thank you present for the Pepsi Center.

New Orleans has next year's game again, so I do give the NBA credit for finally stopping the excuses for why Portland didn't get a game in the Rose Garden, and basically making it about fun cities.

I could not care less if Portland ever gets an NBA All-Star game, but I do care about another NBA Finals!

from what I recall, Vegas had a horrible time with the ASG, the people who lived there hated the gangsta/hiphop element in the city that weekend and it pretty much killed the support for any NBA team moving there.

Vegas could afford to be picky in their preferred clientele in 2007. In 2013?

Vegas is growing with a more techy/art community in the downtown area. They definitely don't want it to turn into a ghetto destination.

I don't think that an All-Star game is going to turn it into a ghetto destination. Brilliant move by Nevada to attract all of those CA businesses, though. I wish the leaders of CA Jr., er, Oregon had the foresight to become business-friendly.
