This thread needs to be moved. Way too many people expressing feelings and trying to portray them into fact.

Who ever said this? Certainly not I or Steve Kerr. He did however say this-

He also said this-

Then there is this-

Of course he a way to be educated. But he has not done it so he isn't speaking on it. He has chosen to be educated on other issues. He speaks on those issues. Pretty sure there are very few 15 year olds that take basic classes in high school that are well versed enough to take a stand on an issue like China and or North Korea.
Trying to make this into something it isn't won't work here. He was very clear about his response.
I don't believe him at all when he says he’s not educated on it. I believe he’s doing the classic politician thing. That's not what I want to talk about but let's talk about Trump and Guns cause that's what I want to talk about and won't have any negative ramifications for me.

And wasn't his father a diplomat or something? How can he not know about China's brutality?

"Malcolm Hooper Kerr was a university professor specializing in the Middle East and the Arab world. An American citizen, he was born, raised, and died in Beirut, Lebanon. He served as president of the American University of Beirut until he was killed by gunmen in 1984."

Kerr is just a moron; a typical bubble-living elitist Liberal who has lived in a wealthy and popular celebrity class literally his entire life. He is the perfect embodiment of the privileged, entitled Bay Area mentality; people who think that the Bay Area is the center of the universe, and only they matter. Paul Joseph Watson did a great video some months back about Kerr and his hypocrisy and ignorance about gun control, as well as his insecurities about Trump, but I can't find it...which means it has likely been removed. No doubt Kerr sent a lawyer to have a word about it with YouTube.
What? You're shaming people for saying they will respond only after learning more about a situation for speaking on it?

You'd rather they be like the dumbass in the whitehouse and spout off nonsense only to be corrected 2 minutes later?

This is absolutely ON topic. It is one of the biggest NBA stories in the past decade and a billion + dollars is at stake.

What a ridiculous notion.

His father was killed by two gunmen and his team has personally been involved in multiple public barbs with Trump. He absolutely has grounds to speak upon it. And everything he has said about both issues have been absolute FACTS. And any of his opinions are justified with FACTS. Just do a tiny bit of research and you'll see that.

His brother in law is actually a professor on Chinese studies and wanted to get all sides of the story before speaking up.

Gimme a fucking break. The level of partisan discord in this country has me so worried. This is Trumpism 101 when you start shaming people for stuff like this.

I don't hate it at all. This is the embodiment of what is missing in today's sound bite social media one liner world. Speaking on an issue without ever doing a lick of research to know what you are talking about has become the norm. Kerr is absolutely right in my opinion and he is also correct that he has the right to reserve judgement until he is better educated on the issue. It is also my opinion that he not only has that right but in his position he has the responsibility to be better educated before he gives an opinion.
How does this post not have any likes while the counter has 4? Are you freaking kidding me?

I think one of the issues is that they are willing to take the check from China, yet claim they need to learn more on this situation. Hard to say you know them well enough to profit from, but not enough to comment. Not stating my opinion on anything, it's what I'm observing.

Please explain what you mean here. My point had to do with whether Kerr's statement was taken out of context or not. I think it very clearly was not out of context.

Heres your issue though, I mostly agree with Kerr on Gun Control and Trump. The problem is all that free speech he loves to tout, he seems 100% unwilling to speak out against a government who has stripped that right from 1.3 billion people. The Im not educated enough to talk about it thing just comes across as an excuse to deflect to the topics that have no ramifications for him. Your saying his Brother in law is a professor in Chinese studies works against you, as then he should KNOW about Chinese government, what excuse does he have to “not be educated on it”. I just think the NBA’s and Kerrs response rubs me the wrong way.

He literally spoke the next freaking day.

This is some kinda of dystopian reality we are living in when this kind of stuff gets shamed.

I dont believe for a second he has no idea, or no way to be educated on the subject but I can almost 100% guarantee you he wont ever say a thing negative about China. IT HAS NOTHING to do with needing to do research, literally most 15 year olds in the US have done global studies and know at least enough to form some opinions. We all know about the way they have oppressed their people, and lack of human rights. Im not buying it at all.

That sounds like you assuming his position for him. I have never found Kerr to be subversive - and I am willing to take it at his word that he has things that are important to him and he is willing to talk about them. That's absolutely fair and reasonable.

He said NOTHING about china all he said was president trump sucks and gun control issues. Go to the thing sly posted and tell me where he actually addressed China...?

It's a fact there is a mass shooting every day in America?

Yeah which is why it rubs me the wrong way he’s never been shy to say stuff on other subjects whether he’s educated or not on the subject but when theres a ton of money at stake its lets talk about these other issues instead. Now its fair to talk about issues your passionate about, and say no comment to the other stuff, but the Im not educated on the subject thing for something like this, just dont buy it. Others might and thats fine, we can agree to disagree. In fact, I’ll still watch NBA games because Im not really offended by it, I just dont believe that is why he wont address it.

“The same people who are asking me to stick to sports are also asking me to expand my horizons,” Kerr said. “I guess that’s what I’m hearing. Again, I will speak on the things I’m comfortable with. I will do things I believe are helpful for my country. I love my country, despite what President Trump said yesterday. I work really, really hard on a lot of things off the floor. One of those things is I don’t want people to feel what my family felt when my father was killed. I know what it feels like to have a family member ended by a bullet. So that’s a passionate, passionate subject for me. So I research it, I’m involved with various organizations, I’m constantly meeting with people, fundraising. It’s part of my life.”

"Generally, my feeling is the things that I'm going to comment on are the things that I feel comfortable speaking about, things I feel well versed about. I comment a lot about gun safety. It's a cause that's very near and dear to my heart. It's very crucial for our country for our future. We face mass shootings literally every day. So I'm involved with four or five different gun safety groups. It's my pet cause. So I'm going to comment on it. It's my right. That's why I love being an American and love my country. I'm able to channel my energy and my resources to places where I want it to go. I feel really comfortable with that. There are places where I don't feel as comfortable. This would be one of them."

"We can play this game all we want and go all over the map. There's this issue and that issue. The world is a complex place and there's more gray than black and white. I realize that what's popular these days is making it black and white. You're either good or you're evil. It's convenient to do things that way, but not realistic."

A lot of people in this thread basically proving Kerr's point here. This is why I refrain from talking about politics.

First off I am going to say this. If you want to blame anyone blame the UK for giving Hong Kong back to China. I mean lets be honest if Manhattan wanted to Succeed from the U.S. would we allow that to happen? Hong Kong became a dual government city in the heart of the most brutal communist country in the world. In what world did you think that one of the most oppressed countries with the largest standing army would let arguably the most lucrative financially set city in the world have its independence especially when its people are indigenous to the country that surrounds it. Ask yourself do you think that a country that routinely kills female babies at birth gives one fuck on what you type on social media? Because if you did that in their country they would just kill you and move on and have lunch. If you think protesting will help, you need to read the events of Tiananmen Square. There is no country that is going to come to the aid of Hong Kong it will remain Chinese now and forever. The only reason why its population has not been wiped out is because it is a lucrative travel/business destination for world travelers and businesses so that is why it is being handled with kid gloves but make no mistake NOTHING will change.
Trump is in the middle of trade negotiations with China and is really trying to get a deal done so the tariffs can be dropped and the farmers can sell their grain to them and trade resumes a win win for both sides. So Trump calling out China right now for handling its own countries affairs would really be stupid for negotiations especially since that if trade talks go south and tariffs stay the same China just closes its door s to the U.S. and they starve 100million people and our farmers go bankrupt I am pretty sure we lose in that deal since China has no problem with starving a 100 million people, none.
Sports is a good thing, it can bring a lot of people together, and is the leader in racial equality, but it needs to stop right there. Politics and sports teams do not mix and what the NBA did may have severe ramifications for decades to come. Just because they are right does not mean that it is a good thing. Would you rather be right and destroy thousands of families livelihood and starve millions of people and not accomplish anything? Or shut up and quietly say that it is wrong and 50 people go to jail. People need to do a little reading before opening their mouths and stick with trying to save the spotted feral hog or something.

The UK had a 99 year lease with China for Hong Kong. We didn't have a lease for Manhattan, we bought it.
