Just hope the greedy owners realize they can make even more money if they approve this. They say they project Seattle and Vegas to be in the top 8 money-making markets. I can't wait for the Sonics and Blazers rivalry again. My first game was in 1989 to watch Clyde and crew go against Kemp and Payton and posse.

I want to see if I can find that game or bits of if it on YouTube. Any helpers?

I'm very mehhhhh on expansion ... owners that want a short term cash infusion should be all for it but it also means more competition for winning and long term a loss in cash for each owner. If I'm Tom Dundon, I'd think I'd want to vote no on this as it keeps the Seattle market open to dangle in front of Blazer fans and the politicians to remind them there is a pretty easy move that could be made. Take Seattle off the board and that's a major chess piece gone as I doubt Kansas City or Nashville are as appealing of destinations for an NBA team.

If the new teams bring in more than 1/30th of additional revenue it won't be a loss in cash for current owners long term.

Although the NBA can only add a 31st and 32nd team once - so if they think an expansion fee would be much more years from now that would be a better reason to hold off.

I'm betting expansion gets approved - I can't imagine the NBA goes to the trouble of announcing these public votes if the plan was to not do it. Silver is competent enough to count 30 votes.

I like the idea of Durant playing his final year for the Sonics.

Yes the Portland Seattle rivalry was very cool.

Also they need to 100% remove any mention of sonics record or activities being tied to OKC. Makes me cringe whenever I heard some "franchise" OKC stat that includes games before 2008.

Dame, Sharpe, Scoot, Deni, Clingan, Camara definitely get protected.

Then it gets tough. Lotto pick if we keep it and draft someone? Grant and Jrue? Jrue and Hansen?

If they are to start playing in the 28/29 season, the expansion draft would be that 2028 offseason, prior to the draft. Camara and Sharpe are the only 2 current Blazers with contracts guaranteed that season. It's way too early to think of who's to be protected.

If I'm keeping off of this roster, It's Deni, Clingan, Camara, Sharpe, Scoot, Lillard, Sidy, Vit. Probably in that order. Maybe swap Hansen with Lillard, and have him just threaten to retire if a team picks him.
Oh yeah, I forgot about Vit. A couple weeks ago I did this and my last two were Vit and Jrue. I left Sidy, Yang and Grant unprotected.

I would love to see it. Push NOLA or Minny over to the Eastern Conference... I think NOLA is close enough to the Texas teams and OKC that it would make the most sense for the Wolves to be moved over.

Going into 2029-30 season who knows who we'll have under contract. If we have the same roster I protect Deni, Shaedon, Clingan, Toumani and Scoot first... if Dame comes back with the lack of movement that we've seen from Wes and Klay then he'll likely be out of the league after his contract ends, so I'm not including him. Just the above five and hopefully a young small ball 5... then whoever the next two best contracts are.

Dame has a no trade clause - players union is not going to allow those players to be claimed in an expansion draft.

I would tend to agree that it's probably a done deal and they've persuaded Dolan and the holdouts to come around to voting yes but I also think you have a lot more faith in Adam Silver than I do. I just don't think they add the value to make it make sense and that's why this has been rumored for close to a decade but never gone through. Sounds like they wanted international expansion but my guess is that was a nightmare logistically and was going to cost too much so the owners pivoted back to a giant infusion of cash now. Personally I think it's short sighted as there is an influx of talent right now but this is all cyclical and 10 years from now there could be another dip in talent and we've got two more teams just diluting the product. At the end of the day though, never underestimate the wants of a big pile of cash to anyone, wealthy or not.

I don't understand how you don't see the benefit and no-brainer concept of 2 more teams adding their revenue to the pot. These teams will be top 8 markets for income. Would you rather have 1/30th of 100 billion or 1/32 of 120 billion? (speaking in generic amounts just to illustrate the concept)

Damn, that means they could steal Deni!? His current contract expires in 2028 and then hes a UFA.

I think unrestricted free agents aren't protected/or at risk to be stolen, because they're not technically that teams contract. Plus, you can't buy bird rights so the expansion team would be limited on what they can offer the player (i.e., it'd be less than Portland could).

How many subscribers could Dwight really have to his substack articles? I feel bad for anyone paying money to read that fuck stick.

Thanks. That makes me feel better.

For those in this group who were converted Sonics fans, where will your allegiance be when Seattle basketball returns? I wonder if this is a real dilemma or an easy switch?

It's crazy I just saw a Yahoo article about Wedding Crashers being over 20 years ago and I was like, damn it's been that long, I remember I went to Bridgeport Village to watch that movie.

I also remember the exact intersection I was at when I first learned the Sonics would change to the Thunder. I was listening to late night sports radio (Ben Maller likely) at the Shell stoplight on 112th and 49th in Vancouver.

Two decades went by quick. When will we ever have a draft as solid as the Roy / Aldridge one.

#Tuesday morning random thoughts.

I was never a Sonics but will gladly adopt and root for them as my second team. Im now 3 years a Washingtonian (Eastern) but forever an Oregonian at heart.
