True, Joe appears to not be proactive and doesn't seem to have a plan. Maybe the owner (or Bert more likely) said no but that's why we need a full shakeup from the top down. This is not a well-ran organization. Cronin has had too many excuses of "there's nothing he could do nobody wanted his really good asset" where it comes out or appears that he wanted to actually keep said asset in the first place.

The lack of a plan is very Olshey-ish. That's the most frustrating part.

It's possible. I'm not in the meetings with Jody, Bert, Cronin, and Billups so I don't know what he is/isn't advocating for, what he's given the green light to do, etc.

I think the way the last GM and coaching searches were handled was piss poor, so the results are very much in line what my expectations. It's the same reasons I don't freak out over Billups not being great. Until things change at the very top, we won't be replacing coaches/GM's with top level candidates.

Right before the dude showed how directionless his plans are and said that at the same time he didn't want to rush things. Cronin has me worried.

I know this isn't your first trade deadline, but the way you're reacting to some of these quotes are like it's your first time. Coaches/GM's over hyping their assets, especially ones they might want to move in the future is standard operating procedure around the league. Every vet team should've called about Brogdon. What they were willing to give up is all that matters.

I agree, there was a mountain of Scoot hype before the draft. The result is many fans are disappointed in his slow development.

I am not disappointed in Scoots slow development. Because, I did not believe the hype that he was NBA ready. Neither his stats, nor eye test convienced me he was ready for the NBA.

I am not saying Scoot is a bust, just that he needs more time to develop his skills. BTW, I hated when the NBA lowered the draft age.

Watching Scoot it's easy to see there are so many things he needs to work on. Once he does, watch out.

Drafting NBA quality point guards is a tricky business. Remember the 2009 draft? 11 point guards taken in the first round. Most did not play in the NBA very many seasons.

The Timberwolves picked 3 pgs in the first round, Rubio, Flynn, and Lawson. Stephen Curry was the 4th pg picked. He turned out ok.

Ah I gotcha. Didn’t get what you were saying, but yeah Olshey would have sent out three firsts for a guy like Brogdon. lol.
But that goes to show that there might be a guy out there desperate enough to do so especially if they feel Brogdon can help them win and so they don’t value that 25-30 pick first much, so willing to give one more 1st up to make the trade happen.
obviously there was not anyone like that this year or I’m positive Joe would have made the deal.

I took his point to be that Olshey gave away Blazers picks like they were dime-store candy. He traded two mid-firsts for RoCo, who wasn't as valuable a player as Brogdon. If Olshey were with some other team, we might get three firsts for Brogdon because Olshey always undervalued his draft picks and seemingly felt he needed to overpay to get talent to come here, even in trade (and, seeing him in press conferences, maybe he did because other GMs just didn't like him).

What, like Dame forcing Joe to trade him? Or Jody Allen forcing Joe under the tax at the 2022 deadline? Or Dame securing Cronin the Grant trade? Or drafting players?

He did nothing but sell in the last three transactional periods (trade deadline, off-season, trade deadline) and the last two he didn't sign/trade for a single meaningful piece whatsoever to help a direction, whether that's trying to win or rebuild.

In a rebuild, getting worse at thee deadline by trading Brogdon for a pick/young player is beneficial to the rebuild. He's a 31-year old guard and we have three young guards. They should be stockpiling assets for the future so that we can be in the market for a star (or have enough chances to draft one) so that we don't make the same mistake with Scoot/Sharpe/Ant that we made with Dame (i.e. being stuck in the middle and being unable to get to contention).

Small ball 3 guard lineups can be high scoring basketball, but tend to get pummeled throughout the course of the year. Losing is good during a rebuild.

No TV coverage. It's too expensive. Convincing a company their logo will only be seen by Blazer fans, not on National TV, have probably been a series of unsuccessful meetings in Portland's Front Office.

I wanted to include all the players that were traded today, if those players were of value to Portland, and if the teams that traded any players that may be of value to Portland would've been interested in Brogdon. You brought up one specific trade in an attempt to dismiss the broad thought exercise.

So he is maintaining flexibility and not painting his direction in a wall for all to see and thus, taking advantage of him. Weren’t many mad at Dame for forcing a single lane Joe had to take, making it harder to get max value, and now you want him to show his cards to not maintain that cloud to not potentially get max value?

That included the trade deadline. It wasn't gonna be anything.

This is the most stress free year as a fan and I love it.

Not having all the pressure on you in your first season seems to help some athletes. You see a pattern in QBs for example, that get drafted high and have to start year 1 for their crappy team, the pressure destroys them. A lot of the good ones didn't get thrust into the fire day 1. The more minutes from starting isn't necessarily going to aid his growth curve. He even said so himself.

The broad thought exercise isn't applicable because it's all in reference to lesser assets getting traded for lesser players than Brogdon.

Washington would have been an ideal replacement for Jerami Grant. There would be 0 pressure to win, and save cap space for improvements down the road. PJ is still honing his craft towards a bright future.

The Blazers must have other windows open during this year's rebuild. Windows that seem to have a strange locking lever for my fellow assistant GM's to peer through and visualize.

The problem is that Charlotte is in the same position we are. Grant doesn't fit in their window. If it were a three-way with Dallas, however, that's another story.

That's what I'm hoping. Brogdon is a positive asset, whether it be on the court or in a trade. They've decided for the next 6-12 months it will be in the locker room and for the team.

Now we sit back and hope GS tumbles down the stretch. Then we'll be crowned summer league champs and all will be right at last.

I remember Dame saying the teammate who taught him the most was Earl Watson. Perhaps that's the role Brogdon is playing for Scoot. He's teaching him HOW to be a pro. Scoot comes with all kinds of natural ability, but he needs to learn the softer skills of being an NBA player. Furthermore, Malcolm has actually publicly lobbied to stay with us, which is baffling to me. Perhaps he's a different kind of vet (his educational accomplishments would support that fact), and he really prizes his role over being on a winning team.

If that is the case, then I'm certain the Blazers value him quite differently than do other teams.

That was my thought. That if he traded hm for a late first, then people might be able to total up the final return for Lillard and it might not look so good....

I think whether Brogdon stays or is traded for a low first or several seconds, we have won that trade handily.

Look at what Dame brought to the team. Offense. Leadership. Range. Face of the franchise. On offense, his points are being more than taken by the guards that are taking his minutes. His leadership was so dominant, everyone deferred to him, especially at the end of a game. That make us predictable. We haven't replaced his range, but that was impossible. Ant can shoot almost as far, but isn't nearly the shooter Dame is. We did lose when it comes to who people think of when they think "Blazers", but that one was always going to be a loser.

In return, we became much younger, with more cap space, much better on defense, and have much more of a team style of play. And that doesn't even count all the assets we now have that will serve as rocket fuel when we're really ready to compete. Yes, Williams is injured and his minutes will need to be managed for the rest of his career, but with he and Ayton, we have an elite center rotation. Brogdon is the perimeter defender we have needed at the point. The GS pick is going to be REALLY good. Then, in a few years, it's going to be raining lottery picks.

Bottom line, it was a trade MIL needed to make. They needed to mortgage their future to win now. We needed to have a fire sale to compete tomorrow. I absolutely love the return we got for Dame and didn't think we would get so much.
