(CBS News) CBS News has learned that the NCAA will announce what a high-ranking association source called "unprecedented" penalties against both the Penn State University football team and the school.

"I've never seen anything like it," the source told correspondent Armen Keteyian.

NCAA President Mark Emmert will make the announcement Monday morning at 9 a.m. at the organization's headquarters in Indianapolis.

The penalties come in the wake of the independent report by former FBI Director Louis Freeh that chronicled repeated efforts by four top Penn State officials, including former football coach Joe Paterno, to conceal allegations of serial child sex abuse by Jerry Sandusky over a 14-year period.

The NCAA had been awaiting the school's response to four key questions pertaining to the sex abuse scandal, including issues involving institutional control and ethics.

I expect the penalties will actually be slight, and this is just hype to prevent a public backlash.

Of more concern to me is the lack of prosecution of the people who should be joining Sandusky in jail simply because they are 1%ers.

My guess is that the NCAA is going to move Beaver Stadium to Corvallis.

Punish "THE PROGRAM", ignore the criminals.

Apparently, they will get both wrists slapped.

I suspect the NCAA will force Penn State to post a picture of Greg Oden's cock on their page for the 2012-2013 season. I mean, nothing's worse than that.

:MARIS61:

According to Canzano, he's hearing that they are going to get something "worse" than the death penalty.

Hmm...

$60 million

4 year post season ban

70 scholarships lost

Vacated wins back to 1998, which will reflect on Jo Pas record

I get all that except the fine. The NCAA is rolling in cash.

they don't get the money. it goes to organizations that help victims of sexual abuse, or something like that. I read that they specified that the organization cannot be a part of Penn State (so if they have a similar program, which they will, it will have to get funded with additional money and not the 60M).

Goes to programs outside Penn State for sexual abuse. Also heard from someone that this will also end up in civil court now costing the university $100's of millions more for the families

To show the greatest of the coach, the sanctions only dropped Paterno to 12th all time in wins. That's still pretty damn impressive

I heard something about players that want to transfer will be able to retain their stats, can anyone confirm?

Status? Yes. They will be allowed to go right into another school and play right away

maybe he had heard status and thought stats, but he definitely said stats as in statistics.

Why wouldn't their stats go with them? It's an NCAA DIV stat, so that would seem to encompass the NCAA DIV they are playing in

How can you pass, rush or catch a winning touchdown when according to the record books the win never happened?

Just kidding, I'm sure their stats count and will transfer.

...nice knowing ya Penn State, have fun in oblivion!

And Penn State will not exactly be a beakon to the nations top recruits, even for the scholarships they do have. It sucks for the fans though. Imagine if this happened to the Ducks just because of some pervert coach.

It wasn't just because of some pervert coach. It's because the university covered up for him.

A 4-year bowl ban seems a little light to me.

Me too. The death penalty was totally called for here. Sounds like the NCAA was more interested in the money.

I know other penalties, financial and otherwise, also were handed out, but I agree with the 4 year ban seeming light. USC(yes, I'm a big USC fan, so I am biased and bitter) got a 2 year bowl ban because Reggie Bush took money not to go to USC, but for his career afterwards, to try to entice him to an agency. Had nothing at all to do with helping out USC. For that, they get 2 years. For 45 counts of sexual misconduct with a minor for Sandusky, they get 4 years. So it's about only twice as bad to touch a bunch of kids as it is to take money for a house for your parents. Makes sense I suppose. Should have just eliminated their football team. Fuck'em.

I read an article about the NCAA not wanting to ever use the death penalty again as they found it was too hard to come back from and it can be too damaging to a conference.

The money doesn't go to the NCAA. Penn State itself wanted the death penalty for 1-2 years instead of this because this is way more harsh

Interesting - yes, apparently it goes to combating child abuse. Guess I just assumed the worst about the NCAA. My bad.
