No offense to you soccer guys, but i would find this a lot more interesting

According to the Portland Business Journal, grassroots efforts are "underway to attract" an NHL franchise to Portland, Ore.

Writer Andy Giegerich reported that discussions are in the "very early stages" and that organizers who hope to bring a team to the area "must convince an owner or ownership group to purchase a team and reach arena-usage terms" with the Trail Blazers, who own the Rose Garden.

Trail Blazers senior vice president and chief operating officer Sarah Mensah told the Journal, "Would it make sense to add another major sports tenant? Absolutely. The building was constructed for both basketball and hockey."

The problem is that it would adversely affect the Blazers. Sure the RG would get more usage, but the NBA and NHL seasons overlap and it's now two franchises chasing limited entertainment dollars. Also, Portland lacks the corporate support that would fill the luxury boxes and advertising boards.

There's only one way to find out for sure. I'm in favor of bringing the NHL to Portland simply because I think I would enjoy having an alternative to the Blazers. I don't think I'm the only person who feels this way. During football season I can switch back and forth between the Ducks and Niners, and then the Blazers start in November, so that's three options up until January. I think the Timbers have shown that there's a market for other pro teams in Portland, and I'm in favor of bringing hockey here.

I'd like it too, but my point is that Paul Allen--no matter his public pronouncements--is going to allow an NHL team to play at the Rose Garden. He has pretty much a monopoly on major league sports in this town, why would he give it up?

I think it's stupid. He owns the damn stadium, why wouldn't he want to make more money off it? I don't think an NHL team would adversely affect the Blazers. I think the NHL and NBA can pull from two totally different demographics.

We've both stated our positions and we still disagree. Believe me when I say I'm on your side; hockey is a terrific sport (especially live) and I'd love to have a Portland franchise. I hope you're right and I'm wrong.

NHL>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>NBA

It would be the best thing ever. I was really hoping the Penguins would come. Oh so close. Almost the Raiders, almost the Penguins, almost got serious about baseball to Portland. Instead you got soccer.
