New owner... Tom Dundon?

You can't be done tanking if you don't have a star.

Do we have a star?

I think we have established that tanking the way some of you want does not get you a star. So whether you like it or not, they won't be tanking again for a while. I mean, look at this last season, one potential star, and he was grabbed by the team with he 11th worst record?
And as good as he is, I am not sure he can carry a team.

I feel like we've exhausted this conversation, but you can't win a championship these days without a star. Usually a top 5 player. This is Portland so we're not going to sign one. It's hard to trade for one. So the only route for our city and our team is usually drafting one.

We were one pin pong ball from Wemby. We were one Ping-Pong ball from Flagg. If we had drafted either of those players I would feel completely different but we didn't.

Locked on Blazers went over whether Deni/Scoot/Shae are THE GUY and Mike and Sprague don't feel great about them. I tend to agree with them. I'm not confident that any of those three will be the caliber of player that we need. So if we don't have a star and you can't realistically win a championship without a star, what are we doing?

well, PK offered to buy the Blazers in 2022 for over 2B when the valuation of the Blazers was 2.1B. That was before the new media deal
Eh, I think it is more because Forbes valuations were off from the market. The Suns being sold for over 4 billion really skyrocketed valuation in 2022. That's more indicative of the valuations of a team than some economist estimating what they are worth.

I kinda wonder if maybe they build a new stadium somewhere else in Portland in an area that can be developed. Diamond Project moved on from NW Portland.

It would be so much better if they tore down the Rose Garden and turned that area into a market area. Convert MC into something useful. Supposedly Dundon has invested a lot of money into developing the area around the new arena for the Canes.

Yes, we have exhausted this conversation, and yes, being in the lottery was helpful even if we did not get a star. But as discussed, there are other ways to get lucky and get that star, and that is the lane we are currently in. You will be disappointed if you are hoping to continue to tank for a top pick. It ain't happening.

Back onto the good old treadmill!

Does Portland have enough corporate support for the NBA, MLB, and the NHL? I think the NBA and MLB are the best options.
Not sure if all 3 will work.

The Process did not work. Not sure why you're so hung up on it.

Radio guys do not particularly have cred with me. Maybe some others are impressed?

Also, we have 4 lotto picks (top 9 in the draft) as what should be, our starters. Plenty of opportunity to develop a "star". btw, the 5th starter already has garnered all Defense.

No one outside of Portland thought Drexler was a "star" until the Blazers went to the WCF. I can assure you that if this team goes to the WCF, one of them will be labelled a "star", by both the national media and posters here.

If Damian Lillard returns to anything close of form, he's a star.

Can we keep this thread about the new ownership and not about tanking, if we have a star player, etc?

You don't think that a new owner is going to come in and assess the current status of the team?

The process lasted... what.... three years? That's a short process.

Honestly he sounds a bit crooked. But maybe hard to be really rich without some questionable business ethics. Capitalism.

Paul Allen was part of the community. Don't know if this guy would be. Just hope he's not a total dick head who gets rid of Pride night to make certain person happy.

How does Utah do it? They have nba and nhl with MLB probably next

I want to know how you pronounce his last name. Is it like “Done Done”?

The SBJ article I posted makes it sound like he's invested heavily in the Hurricanes community.
Do a bit of googling before you make assumptions.

And one of the Portland based investors, Sheel Tyle, his wife worked for the Biden/Harris administration

So two of that list were acquired via trade. Two are secondary stars. Two were just flat out dumb luck.

And in each of those players 3rd and 4th years, how many were thought to be stars or going to lead their teams to titles as their best players on their team?

Maybe 1?

Not sure how Paul Allen was part of the community, since he didn't live here, and never spoke publicly about things, and did a LOT more stuff in Seattle than in Portland.
