From ESPN:

You can already hear the snickers and jokes being whispered around the NHL in the wake of Monday's announcement that (Ilya) Kovalchuk had ended weeks of speculation by signing the longest contract in NHL history, a 17-year deal with the New Jersey Devils that sources say will pay the forward just north of $100 million.

Holy crap! Of all the things that caused the owners to cancel the whole 2004-05 NHL season, setting contract limits was not one of them? He's a 27 year old Wing.

Wasn't there another NHL player who signed an incredibly long contract recently?

Yeah, Rick Dipeitro signed a 15 year, 67.5 million dollar deal back in 2002. And the year before that, Alexei Yashin signed a 10 year one for 87.5 million.

Maybe he is sooo good that in 15 years people that aren't mentally deranged will watch hockey. It is a win in that case. Otherwise, who cares?
