I know that Nic's agent and representatives were in town today to meet with the Blazers' brass. All quiet as of now, wonder how it went?
Nic is hardly streaky. When he gets minutes, he produces: http://sports.yahoo.com/nba/players/4487/gamelog;_ylt=AoJ4yKpIQeTpa6uCiczTjqPkPaB4
That is the markings of a starter.
When I look at this thread I cant help but wonder if Batum were on another team and about to become a free agent how many people would be all over saying we need to get this guy?

I'd like to see 5 years 37.5 million. Back loaded would be great because of our contracts. Can they even go 5 years anymore?
I think we will have to give him around 9 to keep him. Looking around the league, I think that isn't that bad. I think the team that has his Bird rights can give him 5 years. Could be totally wrong.

Teams overpay players because the chance of them obtaining a similar quality player in FA is less likely.
With someone like Batum, overpaying for his current production isn't a bad gamble.
I think giving him 9 mil is bad, IMO. I think he is a 6-8 mil per type player so far. I'm tired of our team giving money on possible talent. He may very well be a 9 mil, maybe even a 10-11 mil type player; but until he proves he can be consistent on a seasonable basis; we can't give in to high dollar demands.
Yes, for his current production I'm sure you can, but the point of paying more is that you're paying for potential. Do you want the Blazers to offer Oden a contract after this season? If yes, anything you offer is paying for production. So ask yourself, is it a better deal to overpay Nic by 1-2 million per year....or Oden for 5-6 or whatever you're going to give him (And which is sure to be over 1-2 million)? If there ever was a way to get a free agent like Batum; I don't think you have to pay 9 mil per. I think you can find someone at his talent level and even more experienced for that price.
I think it's only 4 years, but I could be wrong. I thought I remember reading they took a year off the Bird and the regular contracts. So is it 4 years Bird and 3 years reg?

Aside from the bench mob (who are basically useless right now), Nic is the only player on the team with significant room for growth.

The reason you pay Oden is because he has shown when healthy that he is a difference maker. His PER in in the mid 20's. Batum has a career high PER in the 17's
