Melvin (Pittsburgh, PA) [via mobile]: Why do you think Portland didn't make an effort to get Richard Jefferson? He would have definetly been a good compliment at the 3.

SportsNation John Hollinger: (3:39 PM ET ) I don't think he's much better than Outlaw at this point in their careers, so why pay four times as much money and kill your future cap flexibility? I suspect Portland only wanted to do that deal if they could steal Sessions in return for taking Jefferson.

I agree about this. I also think that Batum going out with RLEC for Wallace would have been a mistake - so the only question I have based on the rumors are the VC for RLEC+Frye - which we have no idea how correct they were.

if we make a move this summer with our 'cap space', do we have until the season begins or June 30 to make a deal?

Collin (Syracuse): Im assuming that Richard Jefferson didnt get traded so with him still being in Milwaukee will the Bucks be able to keep both Charlie V and Sessions for the future.

SportsNation John Hollinger: (3:45 PM ET ) I think that's a really huge question mark. They may have to trade Bogut to somebody under the cap in order to keep both Sessions and Charlie. The only good news is that nobody else has any money either, so they may be able to resign the two at very reasonable dollar figures.

Agree on the Bucks having problems re-signing these guys. Disagree about no-one having money. If Portland is interested in Sessions (and I think they are - I think that if there is a KP mistake to be shown from the last couple of years it was taking Kopo instead of Sessions in 2007 - because Nate was very enthusiastic about Sessions after he auditioned for Portland in a pre-draft workout) - they will be able to pay him nicely and it might not even have to be more than what the Bucks are willing to offer - one would assume that Portland is a more appealing destination for a FA than the Bucks are at this point.

New Jersey could have had a crapload of money (>$25 million) and basically could have led the off-season market. Instead, Rod Thorn lets it be known that he didn't give his franchise this flexibility so he instead could hold on to a draft pick three years down the road and keep Vince Carter on a losing team. Can you say "bungle"?

"The bottom line is that we looked at everything; this was a busy trading deadline," Pritchard said. "I can't tell you how many scenarios we went through. But at the end of the day it came down to this: We believe in this team. And I don't want to give up or give away any of our young players. And that's why we were the centerpiece of some of these trades -- because we have young, good players. We think that we can get into the playoffs and we are going to go to war with this team and we feel good with where we are."

We dont need Sessions, we have Bayless

Oh that's right: Bayless has had a 24 assist game, hasn't he?

I wonder if the team really likes what they see from Batum. I mean, the guy has rapidly improved since last summer and seems to be coming into his own recently. Perhaps the real target this summer is a PG. Perhaps someone like Sessions?

I agree with Hollinger that Jefferson doesn't really represent much upgrade on Outlaw. "Missing out" on Jefferson doesn't bother me. If Wallace could have been had for Outlaw and RLEC and taking on Mohammed's contract, I'd be disappointed in not getting that, from a basketball standpoint.

But then, that may have been an untrue rumour and second, it's easy to spend other people's money. If Allen didn't want to take on a big contract in view of the big extensions on the way, I can't blame him.

I think i'd be down with that if we could get Sessions. :)

I am not certain about that. I think this team has one acceptable PG on the roster now (Blake) and one good prospect (Bayless) - but going long-term - what happens if Bayless does not pan out? what happens if Blake is wounded or stops being effective?

The rumor was that they wanted Batum for Wallace - and I am just not sold on the idea that this is a good deal.

There were a few quoted articles last night that Charlotte wanted Portland to either throw in Batum or take back Mohammed's contract. If it really were an "or," I'd be disappointed not take back Mohammed's deal and get Wallace. But that rumour was probably untrue and it was probably "and."

:sigh:

3-4 more months of Sergio and Blake (no bayless)

3-4 more months of Travis Outlaw...

3-4 more months of terrible perimeter defense...

3-4 more months of Channing Frye...

meh, i was kinda hoping for another pritch-slap but i think GM's are wising up to the fact we often come out like bandits. like some other guy mentioned, we know next to nothing about what really goes on in these discussions so im actually happy enough to trust that KP didnt make a move as it was the best option. trading for trading's sake isnt the way to go.

Fuck.

Several options out there at small forward that would've drastically improved our team, and we couldn't get it done even with the RLEC.

Oh well.

Still a playoff team. Just much more likely to get bounced in the first round.

couldn't have said it better myself, although I think we will be fighting with Houston for the 8th seed

Dear Kevin Pritchard

You blew it. The iron was hot, and we had one of the more valuable trading "chips" in recent memory - a huge expiring contract with insurance incentives. It was the perfect storm to pull off a trade for a really good player in these tough economic times. Sure, we would also have to part with one of our young, talented but UNPROVEN players, but you have to give to get. How many chances do you get to aquire a player that could propel us into a legit playoff team, perhaps with home court advantage? Blazer Mania was that close . . . it could have been a really special season. And perhaps the beginning of many to come. It was the kind of move that could have defined your career. It didn't happen, and you'll tell us to "let the cake bake" and "these are the guys we'll go to war with", and it's just not good enough. I just heard you say on the radio that "Sometimes watching your guys grow through the tough times is just as fun and rewarding as the championship run". Well, not for me.

Our team is flawed. Perimeter defense, and a lack of a solid 2nd scoring option remain problems A stagnant half court offense that, if it weren't for Brandon Roy, would be flat out ugly. Actually, it has been ugly recently period. Many fans feel this team will not make the playoffs, that they will be the #9 seed when the smoke clears. Maybe they sneak in with the #7 or #8 seed and get whacked by LA or SA with this roster.

It's off to other things for me. Fair weather fan? Maybe. I can tell you I turned the channel last night vs Memphis to watch "Lost" - it was an easy decision. I'm tired of watching sloppy play. Travis Outlaw losing his man on the perimeter for open shots and forcing up crap at the other end, or Sergio dribbling the ball into a shot clock violation. Oh I'll tune in to watch a few games, or at least a few 4th quarters. I'm not buying any more tickets this year. Money's too hard to come by these days. I'm sure I'd feel differently if today gone the way I'd hoped.

You've done some good things since you've been here to be fair. I won't curse you or insult you like some. But I'm not buying that Raef coming off the books gives us FA flexability. What FA ever comes to Portland? Not trading RLEC is a waste. I'll be looking for your comments after the season. After these 29 games, and (perhaps) another late season melt down . . . will you admit you blew it? See you then.

Re: Dear Kevin Pritchard

But giving up Travis, Sergio, Channing, Martell, weren't options. They are his boyz.

fo sho. You don't trade your homeys even if it would make us a better team

Re: Dear Kevin Pritchard

Dear KP,

I obviously know more about what happened than you. You sir, screwed up. There is no other explanation. None. What. So. Ever.

Signed,

Phillip.

Re: Dear Kevin Pritchard

Hollinger:

They wanted either a difference maker on the wing or at the point, and the deals weren't there to be done once Washington and Charlotte wouldn't play ball. So I commend them for not forcing it.

I agree.

Yes, Vince Carter would solve all these problems. :sigh:

Re: Dear Kevin Pritchard

Hollinger:

I agree.

I agree also. The no trade is a little anticlimatic but a good thing. People here are two short sided and forcing a trade now could ruin everything we've worked for to this point. We are 4th in the WC with Martell out all season, Blake out for weeks, Roy out for a few weeks, Oden has missed about 1/3 of our games. Things are looking pretty good IMO.

Everybody keeps crying about now, the Ike trade sets us up for the summer. We are in a much better position to land a FA or make a lopsided trade at our leisure. We will be able to take in much more salary then we send out and teams will be even more desperate than they are now.

I can't believe all the cry babies turning on KP. Dont forget he is the one that got us to where we are now. In KP I trust, remember that? So if you are ready to go jump off a cliff over todays events, then please do, Im going to sit back and watch my team go to the playoffs and still be the team no one wants to play.

Kaydow: You forgot the part where you list all the amazing trades that real, forward-thinking GMs actually DID pull off. How Vince Carter was dealt for an expiring contract to Cleveland. How Gerald Wallace went to Dallas for Jerry Stackhouse and a second round pick. These are, after all, the things you need to include as evidence for the fact that KP screwed up.

NBA.com's Trade Deadline Winners and Losers

Trade winner: Portland Trail Blazers

BLAZERS

The Blazers were the team most talked about, considering they had Raef LaFrentz's expiring contract that would have paid insurance money to any team that would have acquired him. Trail Blazers GM Kevin Pritchard likes what he sees at the Rose Garden.

"I can't tell you how many scenarios we went through," Pritchard said. "But at the end of the day it came down to this: We believe in this team, and I don't want to give up or give away any of our young players."

Now, they get the LaFrentz money and he comes off the books this summer. That, and they're still a good team. Sometimes, not doing anything is doing something. At least that's the line I'm trying on my wife.
