Harkless is probably the first free agent we sign (even over a big name stud) simply to lower his cap hold. If we can get him for 6.2 MIL a year for example then we do it right away. Not saying he would necessarily accept that but I think it is possible. And then we gain a MIL. Doesn't seem like much but every bit helps.
That'll be a steal if we can get him for less than his hold!

I like the guy a lot. I don't see the huge offers coming his way though even in this exploding cap. He was very up and down and I don't think teams have them that high on their wish list. All the better for us.

No way Nowitzki leaves Dallas now. He's been there forever, won the ring there, I really cannot see him at any other team even if it's certain he will not win at Dallas again.

He will get better offers in the league but if it was marginal difference (less than $1M) he would probably stay.

I don't think there's any chance Harkless signs for less than $8M/yr.

Why? What has he done this season? I understand he did well the last 15 games or so. But why would he be more expensive than that?

Because this is the most teams in "buy mode" we've ever seen in the free agency era (as far as I recall). Too many dollars chasing too little talent is going to lead to massive inflation in salaries for guys who probably don't deserve it. GMs are going to get desperate to spend their use-it-or-lose-it cap space.

Except it's not use it or lose it. The cap is going up again next year and a lot of teams can actually preserve more cap space for the better FA class next year.

Portland can't, with all its RFAs, but a lot of teams can.

Certainly some will be able to preserve their space, but imagine the pressure these front offices face from ownership and their fans to make their team more competitive now! How many clubs have the luxury (or the stones and wisdom) to keep themselves out of the scrum? A handful maybe. That's still a lot of teams in buy-now mode.

In addiion to what Nik said, Mo is also still quite young (still just 22) and athletic, and put up a decent PER (13.3) despite a very low usage rate (15.6). Basically compares to seasons put up at the same age by Ibaka, Barnes, T. Young, T. Jones. He's still a high-potential player. If we can get him for something in the neighborhood of the MLE, that'd be amazing, but with the cap jump, someone's going to offer more than that just based on the perceived potential.

At one point, that was 3 of Portland's starters that went on to beat an albeit injured Clippers squad. Since the Clips seemingly were better without Griffin, not sure I'm giving up that much for him.

Ah yes, the trade that hypothetically makes both teams worse. If you read the fine print at the bottom...

Under the Clippers:
With this trade you have decreased this team's projected wins by 2.

Under the Blazers:
With this trade you have decreased this team's projected wins by 6.

So, we get worse by 6 wins (in theory) and it costs us almost $7 million in cap space. Plus, we replace some good dudes with one of the biggest douchebags in all of sports.

Ah, but you're not the GM that drafted him.

To give some perspective, the MLE is typically for those guys 4 thru 7 on the roster. Not top starters, but solid role players. I'd consider Harkless in that range.

Last year, with a CAP of $70M, the MLE was $5.4M. That's about 7.5%.

This year, the CAP will be around $94M. 7.5% of that is $7.1M.

Next year, they expect the CAP to be close to $108M. 7.5% of that is $8.1M.

If a team thinks he's a low end starter or 6th man, he'll probably be getting offers in the $7M - $8M range.

If a team thinks he's a future solid starter (23 yrs old with upside), then he may get offers a bit higher than that.

Gag me with a molten lava rock chunk....

Not even giving up CJ straight up for him. Aminu and VOnleh? Okay.... Ill think about it...

Yeah all three is absurd. Blake is a good player, but he is not a "take over the game" whenever he wants type of player.
Not sure we have what they need besides Aminu. They don't need CJ and I prefer to keep him.

I saw where Howard officially opted out today. So the article mentioned how Portland, Charlotte, Orlando and Milwaukee were
once considered the front runners. Seems like a wild guess on someone's behalf.

Ah, but you're not the GM that drafted him.

Neither is Neil Olshey. Griffin was a Dunleavy pick. He was drafted in 2009, Neil did not become Clippers GM until 2010.

Two of the players POR would be giving up, however, were Olshey draft picks: C.J. and Aminu.

The Vertical Sources: Houston Rockets star Dwight Howard has declined his $23.2 million player option for 2016-'17, enters free agency.

Here's the article from ESPN back on April 27, 2016 -
http://espn.go.com/nba/playoffs/201...houston-rockets-face-dysfunctional-end-season

It's expected that he will become a free agent and seek a new team. Orlando, Milwaukee, Portland and Charlotte are the favorites.

Matt Moore lists the best teams for Dwight Howard, and the Blazers aren't one of them.

Charlotte, Brooklyn, Chicago, Orlando, New Orleans, Dallas.

http://www.cbssports.com/nba/news/d...re-are-five-teams-that-should-kick-the-tires/

(The title says 5 teams. The article lists 6.)
Who the fuck is matt moore and why do we care? Is he friends with dwight?

All we care about is what dwight says. And his mentor said we are a good fit. Who would have much more influence on where dwight is going.
