Gsw won 2 titles with the best player being small and defensively limited. He did have great defensive players including a defensive player of the year near him.

Best offensive player, but Iguodala won the Finals MVP one of those years. And yes, Curry won last year's Finals MVP which is very much in line with the rare exception mentioned. He is almost the exception that proves the rule and that exception happens to be the greatest 3-pt shooter in NBA history. Quite the exception indeed.

If not Wemby, the Blazers have a good chance at another Shaedon Sharpe, or at least a player with talent that would cost significantly to obtain in a trade. Or a good chance at trading the pick for a player that would be impossible to obtain otherwise.
At this point just let that person suffer through the next two days. So many people have tried to explain the very obvious logic behind what the team is doing and he chooses to be enraged. One of the longest tantrums I've seen on this forum in regards to something that is helping our team.

Of course it is. Didn't think green font was necessary.

It was a fun start, but historically, with rare exceptions, a team is led to the Title by a bigger player and one who plays defense. For as good as Dame is, he is neither of those. One of those he can't control and in some part, that affects the other. Regardless, a good friend of mine is convinced that while Dame will be the leader, he can't win a title as the best player on the team. Whether that is an unlikely trade of obtaining someone who fits that caliber, or getting lucky in the Draft, all of Dame's offensive production was almost destined to have the results that it has without a bigger, better, more defensive oriented player on this roster.

It is why I railed for years about the CJ pick from way back. Nice score, but it did NOTHING to put this team in a place where historical Finals winners have been. Dame/Ant was the same problem. At least Shaedon has more height and more defensive potential, but there still needs to be added a player of size who has MAJOR impact. Otherwise, this will just continue to be a nice little pedestrian team.

And that is sad.
Giannis Antetokounmpo rings a bell.

And what are Portland’s chances of getting Wemby after that pivot? 12%? 15%? 20%?
While i agree that tanking sucks balls. The chances are 10% better than if they had not tanked. Of that at least we can agree.

I can't see any traction with the argument you keep making, and have been making

it sure seems to be this (and also seems to be the fundamental argument of the trade Dame narrative):

'Dame isn't the kind of #1 option that can lead a team to a championship (even though it's been done before); he's a #1b not a #1a. Portland needs to find a #1a. So the Blazers should trade the #1b they already have, leaving themselves with a #3, maybe/maybe-not, and a bunch of #4's and #5's. Then go out and try to find both a #1a and #1b when it took over 20 years to find their current #1b after their last #1b; and 45 years since they had a definite #1a'

if the goal is to find a #1a to pair with a #1b, the Blazers should exhaust every opportunity to add that #1a to the #1b they actually have before discarding that #1b because some fans are impatient

I actually asked, in this forum, a big proponent of trading Dame how long he expected it would take after trading Dame before Portland was a contender. He estimated 7 years....which is 3 years after Dame's contract expires. geeeeeezuzzz

My God. Seriously? We’re throwing away the last part of the season for the second year in a row for a 10% chance of getting Wemby?? This is desperation taken to a whole new level.

Lol it's okay to use common sense. Try it.

Stick a fork in him and call it Gumbo.

Zion isn't quite into Greg Oden territory, but:

in his first 4 seasons, Bill Walton played in 230 NBA games, including 21 playoff games and had won a championship

meanwhile, in his first 4 seasons, Zion has played in 114 NBA games, less than half of Walton's number, and hasn't played in a playoff game and appears he won't

Can't win the lottery if you don't buy a ticket.
Alright sure. How many times you bought a lottery ticket and won?
The fact remains this team has been run so poorly that now they are forced to tank for a 10% chance to get better. (Which being in the position they are in i agree with)
Run the team well and don't hard cap yourself as well as trade all your assets for garbage.
They should never have been in this position to begin with. They should have traded Aldridge. They should never have traded away multiple first round picks for middling players. They should never have run soo long with CJ.
The list is long. This organization has done this to themselves.
I'm not the only one who absolutely hates the idea of losing on purpose.

This is silly; I haven't bought a ticket with a 10% chance to win before. And really, a 40% chance to win because top 4 is good enough.

When was the last time you flipped a coin? Flip it three times, get heads three times, that's about the same chance as getting the #1 pick.

How many times have you rolled two dice and gotten snake-eyes? The probability of rolling snake eyes is 1/36, or 2.777%. We have a 4x better chance of getting #1 than rolling snake-eyes on a pair of dice. We have a 15x better chance of getting 1-4.

Zion will never be healthy. It’s only going to get worse as he gets older.
I think he would be really durable if he lost a lot of weight. Every injury he has had seems directly correlated with his muscles and bones being overwhelmed by the mass that they carry. I still hold out hope that someone will say the right thing to the guy, he'll get a dietitian and get back on track because he is an absolute joy to watch play the game.

No!
What is silly is that this organization is tanking at this point.

It would be silly not to tank at this point. We have no trade prospects, no free agent prospects, and a super-duper-megastar who wants to win. We *have* to get better through the draft. Portland has *always* had to get better through the draft.

Here's the crazy one. BEN SIMMONS across the board #1 pick!
