you have the right idea, but your numbers are way off.

chances of NJ winning a top 3 spot and us losing the pick (roughly, varies a little depending on which chart you look at):

4th 37%
5th 29%
6th 22%
7th 15%

so there's still some significant danger of losing the pick at 5-7

Odds smodge.... Just be 5th-7th and I think that's good. The odds those drop arent significant. Basically 8th-14th must win the lottery if your 7th, and so on.

WTF is this team doing? won 6 of last 10, and now up 9 on Miami going into the 4th quarter.

Deron Williams isn't going to tank going into his UFA summer, and you know the Nets want to keep him, so they won't tank as an organization, either.

Williams is a stat beast and Avery's past his prime as a coach.

Cleveland 20 39 .339
New Jersey 22 40 .355
Toronto 22 40 .355
Detroit 22 38 .367
Gold State 22 38 .367

Saw tonight that with NJ's loss they went from a 4% to 9% chance of landing in the top 3!

no they're currently tied for 6th worst which has (at least, depending on who's chart you use) a 22% chance of winning a top 3.

looks like we are pretty solidly locked into 11th, so 3% chance for us of top 3

It's a poorly written sentence, but I think what he's saying is that, as of today's standings, the Nets are tied with the Raptors for the 6th pick. The Blazers would get the Net's pick if the Nets don't have one of their number combinations come up and end up in the top 3. Since they're tied with the Raptors, it would be the 6th pick if the Nets win a coin flip with the Raptors. If they lose, it would be the 7th pick.

I believe they do the coin flips before the lottery, right?

I believe they do the coin flips before the lottery, right?

From Wikipedia:

In the event that teams finish with the same record, each tied team receives the average of the total number of combinations for the positions that they occupy. In 2007, the Minnesota Timberwolves and the Portland Trail Blazers tied for the sixth worst record. The average of the 6th and 7th positions in the lottery was taken, resulting in each team getting 53 combinations (the average of 63 and 43). Should the average number not be an integer, a coin flip is then used to determine which team or teams receive the extra combination(s). The result of the coin flip is also used to determine who receives the earlier pick in the event that neither of the tied teams wins one of the first three picks via the lottery.

Ok, so hypothetically, if Toronto and NJ both end up tied, they will most likely split the lottery balls, but each has a different combination?

That is correct. And using your hypothetical, if neither teams vaults into the top 3, then the coin flip will determine who is 6th and who is 7th.

Anyone else feel in their gut that NJ is getting into the top three? I just have no hope.

I have thought this way ever since the trade. They are moving into a brand new stadium in Brooklyn next season, and I find it hard to believe the NBA would allow them not to have a shot at one of the top three picks.

Shit, I've been saying this since the day of the trade. Still love the trade. Would love a top-6 pick from NJ this year, but I have a feeling we will be waiting until next year for the pick.

I still love the trade as well. I just don't think there is any way Brooklyn ends up out of the top 3 this year

I read they draw 4 balls, why 4 not just 3?

it's a 4 number combination, likea lottery number. So they draw 4 balls for 3rd spot, 4 for 2nd, 4 for 1st.

Doh, figured it was something simple. Thanks!

In this draft I think we could package both picks to move up into the 4-5 range (Beal) -- Fez is not worried.

Charles Barkley talked about how he would be leery if the Nets end up with the top pick for the same reasons you all have mentioned. I'm not going to hold my breath on us getting two lottery picks this year.

Can't wait to rock a Brooklyn Nets hat!

Are you guys seriously worried that we wont get that pick this year? There is no way the Nets get in the top 3.
