I loved Whitsitt's teams. I only care about production on the court and he collected assets to build great teams. We got extremely close to winning it all. He didn't have all the lucky lotto draft picks that KP enjoyed yet still put talented teams together.

Sure, why not. Portland is past the point where they need a draft guy (Pritchard) and into the territory where they needs a deal maker.

Say what you want about Whittsit but that dude liked to make deals. Perhaps they could give him an assistant that would tell him things like "You realize that Shawn Kemp is a 300 pound coke-head now, right Bob?"

That's all he really needed.

He wouldn't have to take on President duties, leave those to Larry Miller. He wouldn't have to oversee the Seahawks. That guy had too much on his plate before.

Bob cut ties with Chris Dudley and Clif Robinson allowing us to get Brian Grant. Bob got quality free agents with the MLE such as Jim Jackson and Detlef Schremph. Those were players that could start on many teams and would be useful to every team, Trader Bob convinced them to sign on with Portland.

He also drafted or signed the likes of Rider, Sheed, Wells, Wingfield, QWoods, and those didn't work out very well IMO.

That's right....scraps. They did so much PUBLIC damage to the reputation of the team that we got rid of them for whatever we could get (chairs, used gum, etc.).

Bob subscribed to the "buy high, sell low" theory on assets. Bring in big names, most near the end of their careers, sign them to big contracts, and hope that they click on the court and make a run at a title. Not a bad idea when spending someone else's money. The problem for Bob was that his approach didn't even lead to an NBA Finals appearance, let alone a championship.

Made a splash in the NBA. We got past the first round of the playoffs, which I prefer over not doing so.

I could give a shit what the public thinks. Win or go home. high risk, high reward. i love those kind of teams than one that is stable and boring and slowly building up. its not beautiful to see your team getting knocked out in round one. you have to be the badass.

Bob traded Rider for Steve Smith. Rasheed was traded for the Josh Smith draft pick although the magnificent John Nash made sure some other team got it.

The Grizzlies had the lowest payroll and the OKC Thunder had less payroll than us ... I'm sure there are others, but I can't be arsed to go looking for them.

Like a lot of long time GMs Bob had his pluses and minuses in trades and signings during his tenure. Trading Rod Strictland (who he'd signed as a MLE FA) for Sheed was a good one. Getting Damon for Alvin Williams was a meh... resigning Damon to a monster contract was his worst move IMO.

I find it interesting that most of the posted comments thus far are adamantly opposed to him while most of the votes are in the absolutely! column.
