Olshey interview at draft combine

they just had him on. Two things stood out

1. Inferred the combine and individual workouts are overrated; they’re much more interested in how guys play in actual games. This would add credence to the Hutchison rumors.

2. Quotes:

“This offseason we shift our focus to playoff caliber guys, guys that hit the benchmark with the body of work that can really perform come April, knowing the rebuild got done quicker than we thought. It’s time to think of playoff success rather than can we make the playoffs while retooling.”

“One of the things we were too conservative with this past off season and at the trade deadline was we were probably far too protective of our draft pick and trade exceptions, and the tools we had to build the roster long term.” (Inferred that they didn’t think they were good enough to advance far in the playoffs, hence choosing to hold onto their assets.)

What a liar. He is so full of shit. His scouts raved about Leonard after the combine leading to him drafting Meyers.

Going to get a vet....I like it...the youth movement needs a break on our roster. I expect a lot of roster shuffling with the Paul George, Lebron decisions around the corner. A lot depends on who we decide to keep ...I hope it's a 3 and D SF..

I know I have said it way to much that I don’t like NO. I honesty don’t know what to make of anything he says, as I just generally don’t “trust” his word. It seems like most of what he said I kind of agree with though... The thing is his moves this summer have to prove it. All that really matters is the results. If next year is worse or ends the same, I don’t think there will be many Blazer fans who want to give him more time...
Even though I openly don’t like him, it appears he will get at least another year and I hope he is more aggressive and takes some swings this summer. Wanting him to fail would just mean the Blazers continue to fail...

He was human in that interview. He is not perfect.
Kind of think he was pretty defensive about getting swept because he was also emotionally invested into this team.

Hell, look at the reactions from some in this forum and they aren't nearly as vested as Olshey is. That interview was done shortly after being eliminated. I think there will always be some who despise Olshey no matter what he says.

why such anger and animosity? The draft is far from an exact science and mistakes are often made. It has a lot to do with most players now being one and done so the evaluation is much tougher.

Let it go. Forum members tend to love high risk/high reward drafting, and then when it becomes Leonard, they insist the GM is an idiot.

It sounds like the Blazers will not be moving up to get Mikal Bridges.

First round picks also are absolutely no guarantee of a quality productive player any time soon. Lee produces now and pushes this team closer to where they want to be.
That's the logic that lead to Indiana trading Kawhi Leonard for George Hill.

I remember Kuzma killing it it one of the Lottery scrimmages, yet we drafted Caleb? hmmm

And Martel killed it at the individual workout so we moved down to get him.......instead of drafting a couple of All Americans options. Neil might not have been with the Blazers at the time but I prefer the BPA strategy.

I'm in 22-23 of Nba2K right now. Two seasons ago, I won lottery and traded pick for Embiid. Last season, I landed the 3rd pick in the draft and the guy projected to be #1 by everybody, Desmond Delk, was available but he was a center. I picked him. Now I have two awesome centers and we're playing great.

I'm calling my shot right now:

Courtney Lee will be a Blazer on draft day for the TPE and #24.

And no I'm not saying that I like that move but it fits as a decent vet with playoff experience.

That would be so awful.

To take on that kind of contract the sweetner should come our way. That will cost a big chunk of luxury tax.

It's actually quite simple. Nurk can get the ball at the high post. Collins can take his man (most likely a smaller guy if he's playing PF) down to the block and then seal him so Nurk can make an easy entry pass. In games where Nurk has the advantage just switch that up. Saying he wants Collins to play inside more doesn't mean he'll always be in the post.
Walton and Lucas did this all the time. Walton love playing the ball through him at high post.
But there hasn't been a a center EVER that could pass the ball like the BRH!

And he was a 15th pick so it was a crazy move for sure. They had a huge miss in having him and letting him go. But even more seems like he was the Spurs choice at 15. What a terrible draft for the Blazers too. Nolan Smith right before Faried. Hell even Jimmy Butler went at 30. Chandler Parsons taken in the second round at #38 and Isiah Thomas very last at #60
That first round though has produced some players. Just not for the Blazers.....

Yep, I can see more of Nurkic playing the high post and feeding Collins down low. If Nurkic concentrates and doesn't force it he's a pretty decent passer and Collins has some great footwork to get a shot away.
