SALEM, OR (KPTV) -
An Oregon state senator is proposing a bill that could put new restrictions on gun and ammo sales.

Sen. Ginny Burdick sent an email to colleagues in the House and Senate outlining her proposal in the wake of the Clackamas Town Center shooting.

She said the ability of Jacob Roberts to fire off numerous shots from his AR-15 rifle cannot be ignored.

"This terrifying situation exemplifies the danger of large capacity magazines in our community," states the email, which was forwarded to FOX 12 by Burdick. "Large capacity magazines can dramatically increase death tolls and have no legitimate place in our neighborhoods."

Burdick said even hunters are restricted from using large capacity magazines.

Her proposal, which was drafted for pre-session filing for the 2013 legislative session, creates a crime of knowingly selling or transferring large capacity magazines. Specifically, it would prohibit gun magazines with the capacity to accept more than 10 rounds of ammunition.

The concept creates and exemption for law enforcement and military personnel, according to Burdick.

The penalty for breaking the law would be $6,250 in fines, one year in prison or both.

I think it's a good idea. I believe in the right to bear arms, but have never seen why people need assault rifles and the like that can mow people down in mass numbers.

Yes, if someone is going to break into your house, you should be able to defend yourself just as well with 10 bullets as 70 bullets. If not, either A, there is a lot of people breaking in and you're probably f'ed anyway, or B, you are a bad shot and probably not going to win the gun battle.

It doesn't take very long to change magazines...

Wouldn't that suck to rapid fire 60 times and still miss. Geeze, talk about having to relinquish your man card.

is it as fast as not having to change them?

From the sounds of it the guy was jamming up his gun with whatever he was using. Changing mags might actually have given him time to refocus and find targets rather than spraying like a garden hose.

Or he let his gun jam because he's a scrub noob and doesn't know how to use it, so changing the clip would be too tough for him. We can speculate all day here. The real problem was he had access to a gun, and had some mental health problems that should have been addressed by someone. I think the real answer here is mental health awareness and more access to cheap healthcare.

Yeah. I'm not strongly pro or anti gun control. I just think people tend to get distracted in the wake of these incidents. The focus should be on the victims and investigating the crime, and trying not to give the guy the attention he craved.

I agree whole heartedly that mental health awareness should be a continuing goal of all government at every level. But to say that the answer is also "more access to cheap healthcare" confuses me a bit. I mean, even with Obamacare this stuff is going to happen. Maybe more ouot of frustration of adding a broken system on top of another and creating hatred to boot.

So what are people supposed to do with the ones they already have?

Does anyone even publish a magazine about guns in Oregon?

pure reactionary bullshit

the number of rounds in a clip does not make some wack job any kinder. The highest used rifle used by the US in WW2 was the M1, it never had a clip that could hold even ten rounds, and more people died from this gun than any single other.

Ah yes! People have a knee jerk reaction. They need time to calm down before making hasty decisions. There should be an official waiting period when someone wants to buy a gun, oops i mean post about guns!

Its not completely bullshit. It would barely slow done the experience gun owner, but could be limiter if to the crazy kid who needs a gun now because he is pissed off at the world.

The main argument I hear for keeping the current laws is that this is reactionary bullshit. Is there a better reason to having a mega clip? If not then I vote yes on this law.

Except he stole the gun from a friend, so it wouldn't have slowed him down one bit.

He's. I believe saying changing clips would not slow down someone with experience, but would slow down someone who just steals a gun from a friend, because they wouldn't have the experience of changing a clip quickly. So it would slow him down.

Forgot to address this, sorry BP. I think affordable care act will do a lot of expand cheap healthcare, but I don't know if there is or isn't an emphasis on mental health. I think a lot of people take it for granted.

yeah, I have a better reason

Freedom

This is in line with the thinking that a drink larger than 32 oz iad for you and must be outlawed

every time someone missuses something, those that would "protect" us, jumps up and adds another law that removes another freedom. The elephant is being eaten, at the rate we are going we are surrndering Our bill of rights as fast as we can

The 32 oz thing is another story, I don't think we should derail this thread.

Freedom to protect who?

man I mangled that post

not freedom to protect, rather Our personal freedoms

This was intended to be a free and democratic republic

we keep surrendering Our freedoms to the babysitters in this country

The 32 oz thing is just the same as how we have gone from seat belts to black boxes in cars tha track every move, or how tablets and cell phones are tracked..
Think about the things you could do as a kid that are no longer allowed

For me its easy..
now there are regulations on almost everything from where you can ride a dirt bike to where one can smoke, what you can eat and if you can get a brand of cold medicine in this state. Try to go fishing like you did as a kid..or even ride your bike without a helmet..meh

China's companies don't have regulations on how much they can pollute. There are an increasing number of people interested in dirt biking. Dirt bikes tear up the land. I would like to CONSERVE the land. I guess that makes me a conservative. All of these things are done because it does affect someone. I can give you specific examples to each if you want, but I'll assume you don't want a hammer over the head.

With practice? Almost. Especially if you're not worried about keeping the empty magazine. When I was in the Army, I could change mags in an M16 with less than a three-second gap between shots if I let the empty just drop to the ground. Almost every large capacity magazine I've ever used has had issues with jamming, even when they were meticulously maintained and lubricated.

This is a complete waste of legislative time.

In case of a zombie apocalypse. You would be thankful when a few thousand zombies come rushing your way.

big difference between a "normal" person, and someone with military training flipping out that magazine.

yep

Also take into account how once the gov gets their hands on something, its liike the camel getting its nose under the tent

How many shot mags does a colt 45 have? how about a 9mm of almost any make? If we let these do gooders start fucking with clip count, they will start outlawing hand guns with too many rounds....

If some shithead wants to off himself and take others with him, he does not need a gun, he can create an IED with little trouble. Or for that matter how about that 95 impalla on the sidewalk?

not trying say that this kid was on parr with someone in the military, I know for fact he was not. But most of these guys that flip out like this have had time with wat ever they end up using. odds are that this kid had "played" with the gun he stole. No one just picks up an ak or ar15 or anything like that and intuis its usage. Ad as far as "normal" well we can rule that out..

Ah yes, the tools not designed to kill being used to kill. As opposed to the tools designed to kill being used to kill!
