That second pick is looking mighty good right now. Perhaps you should fake some more migraines in Texas, Ason.

I can't be happy seeing other teams player going down with injury.

I love these threads where we are supposed to just read the thread starter's mind to know what's going on.

Keep up the good work, fellas!

While I would normally agree with you, I am more happy about what an injury to Dirk could mean to the team's draft positioning this year. Especially wrt the Dallas pick. The fact that karma has come back to bite Joumanna's ex also brings a smile to the face.

<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE (THE DADDY @ Mar 23 2008, 02:05 PM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}></div><div class='quotemain'>What did he do? Can someone please expound on this?</div>

Dirk blocked Udoka on the fastbreak and landed very awkwardly. He was down for several minutes, and then taken to the locker room. No other updates.

Best case scenario. Dallas maintains their 8th spot and the Nets get two mid-round selections.

I wonder what protections are on the pick next year. Without Dirk, the Mavs are done. They have no T-Mac on their team. Their point guard isn't able to carry a team anymore and is a piss poor fit for the Mavs.

I thought first left leg, then ankle
I mean if it's knee, call it knee.

and now we lose their 1st round draft pick why you guys happy?

its protected if they miss playoffs we get nothing

they not finishing better than 7th anyway and you guys happen now it might be 8? well looks like nothing cause nuggets will pass them up

You don't lose protected picks. You lose the protection on them and get them the next year, unless there are other parameters set up. We would get an unprotected pick next year, if they make the playoffs.

ok then what about 2010, i thought you cant trade back 2 back 1st round picks would it go to 2011?

If they miss playoff, we get their pick next year no matter what. I'd prefer next year's pick because its unprotected
.

consider this scenario also: Dirk comes back from injury, Kidd has full preseason with Dallas and they go all the way to the Finals. And we're getting 29-30 pick.

we know that's not going to happen

Dallas hasn't been the same since the Miami series.

Well, they are unlikely to miss the playoffs, but their pick could certainly be in the #20-#22 range. As a Net fan, I'd be quite happy with the #11, #22, and #41 picks. Best-case scenario is probably #9, #20, and #39.

[If Dallas DOES miss the playoffs, then the Nets get unprotected picks in 2009 and 2011. Unless Dirk has a torn MCL, it's probably unlikely that the Mavs would miss the playoffs two years in a row.]

There are a LOT of options with those picks. Not just in terms of what players to select in those slots, but they are valuable enough to combine or to combine with players. The Nets need to sit down and decide what the team should look like.

Getting real

IF the Mavs don't make the playoffs--and that looked like a MINIMUM of five lost games by Dirk--here is how things change.

The Mavs retain their pick this year. It is lottery protected

The Nets would have the Mavs' UNPROTECTED first round pick in 2009 (which is supposed to be a better draft) and the Mavs' UNPROTECTED first round pick in 2011. Jason Kidd will be 38 at the time of the 2011 draft.

In terms of trade value, an unprotected pick in 2009 may be more valuable to a rebuilding team than a protected pick in 2008...a team like the Clippers for example.

well i would want them to make the playoffs with the 8th seed, if not id gladly take an 09 pick and pray they fall apart

The Mavs may be rebuilding soon. Dirk is 30, Kidd is 35 (today), Dampier is 33, Terry is 30, Stackhouse is 33. Only four Mavs will be under 30 at season's end: Josh Howard (28), Antoine Wright (24), Jose Barea (23), and Brandon Bass (22).

As Donnie Nelson said at the signing of Devin Harris, Harris, Diop, Ager and Howard represent the "future cornerstone of the franchise".

Uh oh.

well stated ^ .... nelson is a great coach... who could we replace frank with, some one with greater knowledge of the game than frank, and better use of personnell than frank, oh i got it... ANYBODY but frank

Unofficial word is that he is out two weeks...but that is unofficial.</div>

Mavs fans are ready for lottery.
well, looking at their schedule, they have only 4 games winnable out of 12, considering Dirk is of no help for quite some time. perfect time for GS and Nuggets to take advantage of Mavs.

Other than Kidd's horrid shooting, none of this is his fault.

So true. The only bright spot was Harris Diop and Howard all young players who came up in big moments but the Mavs trade for Jason Kidd will go down as one of their worst moves since not resigning Steve Nash.

The Mavs will soon realize their problem is Dirk and by the time they try to move him they will not be able to get any value for him.

I said this after the trade and will say it come playoff time. The Mavs just bought their own tombstone with the Kidd trade.

The Lakers will only get better and are still young. The Jazz are mental tougher than the Mavs.

As someone said I can see Jason turning in to Gary Payton a veteran PG going from team to team trying to search for that ring.

lol noone is blaming him. but, having seen Kidd with Mavs in couple of games I can say he is not himself or at least, he's not Kidd I've seen in Nets uniform for sure. well, he desperately wanted it, let him enjoy it.

I'd rather this years pick than next year other than the fact they may suck in 2011.
