OT: Joe Johnson a Max Contract Player

Maybe, but maybe it's better for them to do that and take the money and sign somebody else. I do not believe I am alone in my thoughts that the Atlanta team as is, has pretty much done what it can do in the season/playoffs. Does anybody honestly believe Atlanta will contend with him? The only way I see Atlanta contending, is when they decide that Josh Smith isn't a power forward, they move Horford over to PF, and go get a real center. Until then, they have no shot. Fail=Fail.

who is "somebody else"? The realistic players they can get won't measure up to Joe Johnson IMO.

They can't just arbitrarily blow the team up when they are a competitive team in the eastern conference. Losing Joe Johnson, who is their franchise player will really send the franchise into a tailspin. They are better to make the other moves with Smith/Horford than to lose JJ.

You are really making that statement in this free agent year with the biggest derth of NBA talent available for signing in the free agency period? No talent available out there aye? Ok good luck with that one.

Losing one player isn't blowing up the team.

Last I looked, the Hawks had horrible attendance, with or without Joe Johnson. So he wasn't really drawing in the crowds with his play, was he?

How realistic is LeBron or Dwayne Wade going to Atlanta going to be? If they lose Joe Johnson and sign Amare or Bosh, then they need to trade someone anyway. might as well try to work a sign and trade with Horford/Smith for a Bosh or Amare.

Joe Johnson is a top SG in the league, on par with Brandon Roy. you don't let him walk for a chance to sign Carlos Boozer and JJ Reddick.

Losing Joe Johnson IS blowing up the team. After not retaining him, everyone else is kind of irrelevant.

Maybe they should blow up the team though. That is if they can't get a real Max-contract level player.

They're not going to win a title with that core nor are they seriously in the mix. Overpaying a guy with 13.7 PER (102 offensive rating, 23.4% usage) in the playoffs is not the way to fix things.

This has been their M-O for as long as I can remember. They get rid of JJ and have nothing to show for it, they'll have zero people in their stadium again. They've been around 50-win seasons the last two years after YEARS of mediocrity. Can they get past the LeBronze-Bosh unnamed team? Probably not...

they get rid of JJ they go back to being a 30-35 win team, no playoffs for years to come.

Looks pretty comparable to me

Done deal, according to Ken Berger.

He will get $25 mil at age 35.

$120 mil for a guy that choked in the playoffs and called out the fans. Great management in ATL.

Is he really worth that much money? I think with so many teams clearing cap space there will be a lot of players signed for much more than they are worth.

And this is going to be a great thing for us down the road. We want as many teams as possible to blow as much money as possible on as many crappy-ass free agents as possible this summer.

Then when the new CBA punishes them for those contracts, we profit.

being a shooter does not have a direct coorelation to FG%. Maybe to 3P% but not FG%.... Roy gets most of his FG's at the basket

That would be a major plus in Roy's favor if true. I have no idea if it is or not, but guys who don't get to the basket are not worth more than those who can.
