The Portland Winterhawks announced today that the hockey team will collaborate with the Portland Trail Blazers on a plan to redevelop the Rose Quarter and the Winterhawks home stadium, Memorial Coliseum.

The junior ice hockey team has been playing at Memorial Coliseum since the late 1970s. The venue draws over 430,000 guests per year for over 150 different events.

Now, the two sports teams have a proposal to reduce seating capacity at the Coliseum by several thousand seats to make the venue more intimate, according to Charlie Burr, project communications for the Jumptown project.

“Venues that are doing well for hockey have a more intimate seat count,” Burr said. “We’re looking to build on the Coliseum’s best use as a multipurpose sports facility while being sensitive to its architecture.”

The concept would also upgrade the Coliseum with a new scoreboard, a league-regulated ice sheet upgrade and new fan amenities such as club seating and more concessions.

As far as the rest of the Rose Quarter, Burr says the teams are exploring the option of a 250-room boutique hotel.

“The district as a whole can be a force to attract additional convention center business,” Burr said.

Blazers president Larry Miller will give a presentation on the Jumptown plan today at 4 p.m. at the Oregon Association of Minority Entrepreneurs, 4134 N. Vancouver Ave.

I love the idea of the 250 room hotel, if they can get business.

I like the idea of a smaller, updated Coliseum for hockey. Mch like AAA baseball, it's a much better experience in a smaller, full venue.

All I know is that after seeing the Glass Palace with the curtains pulled back for the Phoenix game in pre-season is that they should completely remove them altogether. It looked phenomenal and actually made me think of it as a piece of architecture and not just a run down dump.

I'm not interested in public financing of any remodeling of Memorial Coliseum... I have no idea how they intend to finance it, if they want to put their own money up, go for it.

Considering the city owns the MC, I highly doubt there would be no city $, but it'd probably be urban renewal $.

Yeah, I know...just this whole idea of "revitalizing" that area into some sort of "Downtown Disney" hot spot seems idiotic... and having to renovate that piece of crap arena just because some architects got angry gets me grouchy every time I think about it.

And not a single rendering yet.

Btw, for those who don't know the history behind "jumptown" here is a link
