DOWNTOWN - A six-foot, six-inch one time basketball star stood before a judge Monday and said he made a mistake when he was drinking and then drove his car in March.
Ruben Patterson, 35, was spared any jail time after Hamilton County Municipal Court Judge Bernie Bouchard suspended a six-month sentence and ordered Patterson to pay a $500 fine and attend a three-day driving program.
Patterson also may only drive to and from his Indian Hill home to work in Mason for the next six months. Should he violate any of the terms, Bouchard told him, he would go to jail for six months.
Patterson's blood alcohol content was .117 when he was picked up in Glendale at 1:50 a.m. March 27.
Bouchard also told the former University of Cincinnati player to not drink alcohol for the next 18 months while he is on probation after pleading guilty to the charge he operated a vehicle while intoxicated.
"I am not going to drink and drive," Patterson said when asked what he had learned.
Patterson has been in trouble before.
He's a registered sex offender after he was convicted in 2001 of attempted rape when he attacked his 24-year-old nanny. At the time he played for Seattle Supersonics.
His pro career spanned 11 seasons. He began his career in 1998 with the Los Angeles Lakers and ended with the Los Angeles Clippers. In between, he played for Seattle, Portland, Denver and Milwaukee with his longest stint - five seasons - coming with the Trailblazers.
A year before leaving the L.A. team, Patterson bought a new 15-room 6,447 square foot home in Indian Hill for $3.4 million.
