Will he never learn?

http://news.cincinnati.com/article/20100726/NEWS010702/7270335/Basketball-star-spared-jail-for-DUI

DOWNTOWN - A six-foot, six-inch one time basketball star stood before a judge Monday and said he made a mistake when he was drinking and then drove his car in March.

Ruben Patterson, 35, was spared any jail time after Hamilton County Municipal Court Judge Bernie Bouchard suspended a six-month sentence and ordered Patterson to pay a $500 fine and attend a three-day driving program.

Patterson also may only drive to and from his Indian Hill home to work in Mason for the next six months. Should he violate any of the terms, Bouchard told him, he would go to jail for six months.

Patterson's blood alcohol content was .117 when he was picked up in Glendale at 1:50 a.m. March 27.

Bouchard also told the former University of Cincinnati player to not drink alcohol for the next 18 months while he is on probation after pleading guilty to the charge he operated a vehicle while intoxicated.

"I am not going to drink and drive," Patterson said when asked what he had learned.

Patterson has been in trouble before.

He's a registered sex offender after he was convicted in 2001 of attempted rape when he attacked his 24-year-old nanny. At the time he played for Seattle Supersonics.

His pro career spanned 11 seasons. He began his career in 1998 with the Los Angeles Lakers and ended with the Los Angeles Clippers. In between, he played for Seattle, Portland, Denver and Milwaukee with his longest stint - five seasons - coming with the Trailblazers.

A year before leaving the L.A. team, Patterson bought a new 15-room 6,447 square foot home in Indian Hill for $3.4 million.

Well, at least he hasn't lost his house and it sounds like he has a job!

Rueben is my dawg! I miss him!

He should have bought that house when the recession hit.

Is that his only legal problem in the last decade? He's no problem. After this many years, they should drop the registration stuff.

That penalty is weak for drunk driving. No breathalizer in his car, no weekend jail time? What would happen if that was in Oregon? When I moved down to AZ 14 years ago I know that AZ was just starting to put harsher penalties in place, but that was just bringing them upto where Oregon was that many years ago.

He avoided jail for rape, wife beating, now drunk driving? Didn't he say he had quit drinking and found Jesus?

Having lost a family member to a drunk driver I don't consider it "nothing".

"Finding Jesus" isn't a cure-all for sinful behavior, nor a reason to get a reduced punishment.

These experts on Ohio law can answer this. What is the usual penalty in Ohio, the one that got reduced?

I agree, but as I said Patterson said he had "found Jesus" and stopped drinking. That the 2 were related. Obviously does not square with recent events.

as I understood it, his spousal abuse charge (which was dropped) was from him putting his wife in the hall closet after she wouldn't stop hitting him. Her cell was in the closet and she called the police... I think they're still together. If this is true do you really think he should have gone to jail or be referred to as a wife beater?

I fully agree with you here as drunk drivers have impacted my life too. I don't understand why it's treated as lightly as it is here and in society in general and wish he'd have to spend some sobering time in jail. Drunk drivers threaten the lives of the general public, it's no joke

Police spokesman Sgt. Doug Nafziger said Monday that Patterson was taken into custody after his wife, Shannon, called an emergency police number and said he assaulted her at their home.

The couple's children, ages 2 and 10, were in the house at the time, police said. The presence of the children is enough to boost the charge from a misdemeanor to a felony under Oregon law,

They have since divorced.

The most astonishing thing to me about this article is that Ruben is only 35 years old.

Interesting job of character assassination. Do you know the circumstances of the rape? It's not he's he was roaming the streets.

Oh, so rape is OK if it's inside?

News flash: It's not character assassination if it's true.

And speaking of Whoppie Goldberg, whom I usually like, I found the following:

A youthful error? Yes, perhaps.
But he's been punished for this lapse--
For decades exiled from LA
He knows, as he wakes up each day,
He'll miss the movers and the shakers.
He'll never get to see the Lakers.
For just one old and small mischance,
He has to live in Paris, France.
He's suffered slurs and other stuff.
Has he not suffered quite enough?
How can these people get so riled?
He only raped a single child.
Why make him into some Darth Vader
For sodomizing one eighth grader?
This man is brilliant, that's for sure--
Authentically, a film auteur.
He gets awards that are his due.
He knows important people, too--
Important people just like us.
And we know how to make a fuss.
Celebrities would just be fools
To play by little people's rules.
So Roman's banner we unfurl
He only raped one little girl.

Interesting job of character assassination. Do you know the circumstances of the rape? It's not he's he was roaming the streets.

The circumstances are that he told his maid to give him oral sex, standing in his kitchen. The maid, who was black and his age (I think he was 25 and she was 24, unlike Kobe, where it was a teen 5 years younger and of opposite race, and unlike Ruben, Kobe held her and there was penetration), waited a week before reporting it, convinced by a friend. Meanwhile, she acted to his wife as if nothing had happened. She continued coming to work at his house every day whether his wife was there or she was alone with him, both before she reported it and after. Only when the wife fired her did she stop coming to his house,

As in all sex cases, jail is the least of the punishments. The legal system knows this and doesn't worry about the actual prison term, but ignorants complain about the exact number of years. Ruben avoided jail, but he stopped being a Sonic (where he was the best player and spark plug, in my opinion--consensus was 2nd best), was signed as a Blazer by Whitsitt in a smart move for less than his value, never got more contracts of any size, and thus lost millions of dollars. His humiliation will continue all his life. This Cincinnati article of a routine DUI would never have seen print if not for his famed lifelong sex offender status, which hasn't ended a decade later and never will.

Interesting that certain people whose agenda is supposedly to simply defend women, and not just to join the news media in pushing the negative side of sex, haven't joined me in this thread. What a surprise that they haven't...

Yes, he might still be in the league, making big bucks, if not for this. When the Blazers got rid of him, he was at least as effective as Batum was last year, because of his physical play, which is what we have lacked for several years. Dumping him cost us wins.

But to haters, losing millions of dollars isn't enough. Some hypocrites we know too well even pretend to be on the left, but never post about the widespread use of torture by Bush and Obama.

I agree. Ruben was a very efficient and productive player.

Um, yeah. Seems like an OT issue to me.

I found Jesus one time. I was still young and my manager at McDonalds told me to go get him as he was ten minutes over on his smoke break.

I lost all respect for Whoopie after that bullshit and about half of Hollywood as well. Fucking sick society we live in. I could take this on an additional tangent here, but I won't.

What does race have to do with the Kobe case?

Don't forget the claimed right to assassinate Americans!

Yeah, that makes perfect sense.

Would you agree to plead guilty to rape and be on the sex offender/pervo list for life because you asked your maid for a blow job?

Wait, maybe you would.

Your version of what happened is pure horseshit.

From Out of Bounds by Jeff Benedict

Jenny Stevens, a white 23 yr old, was the nanny for the family. After Ruben's wife had cosmetic surgery, Jenny was staying overnight and went into his room to retrieve one of the kids. Ruben was masturbating and completely nude.

Ruben used his legs to box her in. He grabbed her head with his hands so that she could not turn her head side to side, let alone move the rest of her body. When she tried, he sqeezed harder.

Jenny cried as he put his penis in her mouth. He ejaculated into her mouth within seconds. Then he let go of her head and she fell backward. "Dont tell anyone" he said as he stood up and nonchalantly walked out of the room and went to bed.

A third party was in the room when Jenny told Ruben's wife what happened. She went crazy, beating Jenny up. But, she called Ruben's agent and told him that she was divorcing him.

You can read more in the book. Almost half of it is about former Blazers.

No dude, jlprk said she was black and Ruben only asked for a blow job. Keep your facts out of this. It's ruining his... I'm sorry, what was his point again?

Yeah, that makes perfect sense.

I looked it up yet again. I remembered it right from several years ago, except for these details. The maid lived there, and it was in the bedroom, not the kitchen. As for her race, I was sure it was black when I researched it years ago, but I can't find it now, so maybe she was white. She was 23, not 24. And people in this thread said he got no jail, but he did. Here's what the Seattle Times and P-I say.

A deal was reached with the prosecutor, but the police department didn't like it and released false information, lying in order to influence the case. They were never held accountable, of course. His lawyer described the police misconduct and the prosecutor agreed it had happened.

For 3rd degree attempted rape, Ruben got 15 days in jail plus over $10,000, the league suspended him several games without pay (that's like $300,000) and fined him over $100,000, and the woman made money off him in a civil suit.

His wife (and he) said that the sex was consensual and she was angry at the prosecutor, ready to hit her. (From what I've read of the wife she was always a very aggressive person. A few years later they divorced, but not over this.)

Sly, you post a lot of slimy sarcasm (you often sound like something related to this is your profession), but my version wasn't horseshit. My point was that he has received enormous punishment, while everyone was saying he got off so easily.
