OT: Omer Asik asks Rockets to trade him......Let the rumors begin... (1 Viewer)

Team chemistry is a very delicate balance. Lopez provides it, fits well with our personnel on offense and defense, and Aldridge obviously loves him. I'll stick with Lopez (and Aldridge, obviously). Now if Asik wanted to come off the bench and we could get him for backups....

Asik will definitely be traded by the deadline. As a 3rd team, maybe Olshey could grease the trade with $3 million and get us a Mo Williams/Dorrell Wright quality player.

NEW YORK – — With his starting job gone and his playing time slashed, Rockets center Omer Asik has asked to be traded, two individuals with knowledge of the request said Thursday.

Asik, who started every game after signing with the Rockets last season, came off the bench Wednesday in Philadelphia, but struggled. He played only four minutes and not at all in the second half. Asik has made his trade request within the past 48 hours, a person familiar with the conversations said.

The Rockets have no trade involving Asik in the works, with one individual saying a deal is more likely in months than in days.

Asik declined comment, referring questions to his agent, Andy Miller. Miller also would not comment on any trade request.

““I would say the situation is very frustrating right now and we’re trying to work through it,”” Miller said. ““For Omer, the objective has always been to continue to develop and grow as a player. That’’s why we came to Houston in the first place. If that objective can’’t be met, if we can’’t get the right platform to grow and contribute as a player, it’’s certainly frustrating.””

Asik, who has the longest streak of consecutive regular-season games played in the NBA, averaging 10.1 points and 11.7 rebounds last season. He is averaging just 5.6 points and 8.1 rebounds this season, with his playing time reduced to an average of just 22.7 minutes per game.

Second-year forward Terrence Jones replaced Asik to start the second half Monday against Toronto and started again on Wednesday in Philadelphia. Rockets coach Kevin McHale said the switch was largely about matchups, but in the second half against the 76ers, Jones returned to the game instead of Asik when Dwight Howard went out in the fourth quarter.

““I think the way they play and spread guys last night with Spencer Hawes and tonight with (Andrea) Bargnani and Carmelo (Anthony), it’’s just a better matchup for us,” ” McHale said. ““Last night, when they backed up, they went smaller, put Lavoy Allen in, another guy who stayed out so we went smaller, too.

““I liked a lot of stuff he and Dwight did together. They were big. They protected the rim. It’’s going to be a lot of matchups, a lot how things work. He’’s going to have to get out there and play. Will he start against some bigger teams? Possibly.””

At this point, however, Asik would rather start for someone else.

simply amazing, didn't I already start a thread like this, this morning?

^How can you call yourself a "GLOBAL MODERATOR" (whatever the hell that means) when you average like 40 posts A YEAR!!?? Are you Denny's nephew?
Something like that.

I like Lin and how he has progressed.

He's defending well and is really starting to shoot lights out.

Clutchfans are going nuts today with their lust for LMA.

Of all the threads only one poster actually stopped to look at it logically from a Portland standpoint.

The other 99.9% are full on Mags.

Or worse, BGD's!

I take offense to your comment. I may have to put your name in my mouth!

Clutch fans would love having Aldridge because that would make them instant favorites to win the west. That is their key missing piece. Either love or Aldridge. Hell even horford would work!

Unless Aldridge really wants out, I don't see the Blazers dealing for Asik. Given how well the team is playing now, I don't see why he would want out. He has a true C (as opposed to a PF playing C) to help him. The team is fairly deep. I could see how he might want to go to Houston, but why mess with a good thing?

The issue with Houston is that they don't really have the pieces for what Portland probably would want.

Chicago sorta does though

Oh I don't think he wants out or the blazers would even tender an offer. I'm just saying there is a reason why Houston fans are drooling at the possibility to obtain Aldridge.

If Asik doesn't want to be a backup in Houston I'm not sure how happy he'll be being a backup in Portland. It sucks having players on the team bitch about playing time. Right now we have the perfect blend of good bench players who can step into more minutes, but not too many bench players where guys complain. With Lopez playing well this is probably the worst timing possible of needing a center the last 4 years. I just don't see a trade happening with us, there are other teams who might use him as a starting center. Now if Houston wants to move Asik to get out of his contract and Asik's agent said he was ok with coming here I'd love to acquire him as a backup but I don't think Paul Allen would be happy paying our backup center $15million next season.

Oddly I find the Rockets very easy to root against so I kind of want to see Asik stay on the team and not play crushing his trade value and hurting the locker room.

So you think Lopez is better than Asik?

No, I’d give the edge to Asik but its really close. Lopez has looked very good on offense and has a great attitude. Lopez has a much cheaper contract. Does Asik’s defense make up for that difference? Probably, but I’m not excited about having to play 4v5 on offense again as when we had Pryzbilla. That is boring basketball. I’d refrain from us trading any starters until the offseason unless its a major upgrade.

Asik not even getting the backup minutes in Houston is a major concern, he was good but not great off the bench in Chicago. He should be able to at the least provide excellent reserve minutes as Dwights backup. It makes me wonder if last years Asik stats were inflated by Houston’s fast pace and unsung defensive teammates such as Parsons.

I think the back up minutes have more to do with the public trade request. McHale seems like the type to punish a player for keeping things about the team private.

Just sick?
NBA.com said:
It was the first DNP of Asik’s career and ended his league-leading streak of 239 consecutive games played. He was not available for comment after the game, having left the Houston locker room well before it was opened to the media. McHale said: ”He told me today he wasn’t feeling good and he didn’t know if he could play,” McHale said after the game. “I asked him, ‘Are you ready to play?’ and he said, ‘I don’t feel good.’ That’s why I went with Greg.”

Why? Historically Asik is a more mobile pick and roll defender and a better rebounder and both are pretty limited offensively.

Oh just chemistry wise, you're right though. Although I feel Lopez is progressing on offense.

I'm new to this board so still learning who everyone is.

First of all, SuperDad, I could watch that GIF all day long. Such great memories.

I like Asik but at that contract, I'm tempted to stay with Lopez if he continues his recent reincarnation of Joel with more offense. He spoke glowingly about how quickly this team is developing chemistry and although I don't expect them to play at the pace they are currently, they are looking better than I projected early on.

Given the early returns, I'm guessing NeO will sit back and watch how things develop at least until the deadline.
