Here's some off the top of my head:
Overrated:
Dwight Howard: He's very good. But he's being called the New Shaq. How short are people's memories? Maybe the new Shawn Kemp - another physical freak whose offense only really developed when he got fat.
Amare Stoudemire:
I think the microfracture took a lot more away from Stoudemire than people admit. He used to destroy defenders with brute strength like Howard does. But he's much more offensively varied than Howard, so he can still score and people don't seem to notice the drop off in physical talent. However he just doesn't give a shit about defense AT ALL, and he's a lockerroom cancer.
Kevin Durant: He is a great scorer - freakishly good shooting for someone so tall. But he's very skinny with very narrow shoulders and just has no clue on defense. Blocks very few shots and takes away more on defense than he adds on offense. No team with him as their star will go very far. Actually made UT worse. Tracy McGrady he ain't. Maybe Ben Gordon after he's been tortured on the rack.
Rudy Gay: Remember when people used to say he was better than Roy? Now they say he's holding OJ Mayo back. (So maybe he's only overrated for people living in the past.) I wouldn't trade Travis Outlaw for him. Talking of Mayo:
OJ Mayo: Is he really in the running for rookie of the year? I thought he was supposed to be an all-round player. He's coming across as more of a short Glenn Robinson. Old for a rookie, too.
Gerald Wallace:
I WANT to like Wallace, because he's someone who throws himself around and fills up a boxscore. But he just doesn't seem to affect the outcome of games much, and he may be a bit of a Ruben Patterson in that his defense looks a lot more impressive than it is. Shawn Marion is like this too.
Underrated:
Deron Williams:
Yes, he's not Chris Paul. But he is freakishly good. He's the New Chauncey Billups. I can't believe he hasn't been an All-Star yet. I would say he's at least equally valuable to Brandon Roy, and perhaps more valuable, (a) because he's what makes that team work, and (b) the Jazz are better than the Blazers, despite being without Boozer for so long.
Andrei Kirilenko:
People seem to have written him off, but he's still very valuable defensively. He may be more important to the Jazz than Boozer.
Shane Battier:
The New York Times may have fixed this. But most "fans" of the NBA will still never believe it.
Yao Ming:
What he does doesn't look pretty, but he does it well, and this year he's been very valuable to team that has been decimated with injuries. He tends to get forgotten in the center debate, but he's a much better basketball player than Dwight Howard. No surprise for someone whose idol was Sabonis.
Rajon Rondo:
Apparently more valuable to the Celtics than Garnett... Just because he can't shoot a lick, people think he's a bum. Jason Kidd, anyone? He's not the creator that Kidd is/was, but he's not far off, and his defense is game-changing. He may be the best non-center defender in the league. Eric Snow with freakish athleticism?
