OT: Ron Artest wins NBA Citizenship Award

Amazing since this was the same guy that ran into the stands to attack a fan.

I do hate Artest. Never liked him even when he was in Indiana. But honestly, that was an awesome thing to do. In lifetimes, players may never get an opportunity to win a ring. Instead of locking it in a safe deposit box; he uses it to round up money for the fans in his area. So as much as I hate the Laker and Artest; I commend him for his unselfish act.

When Artest is in his right mind, he's a pretty good guy. It's when the squirrel breaks the wheel loose from the cogs in his mind and he flips out that he's a problem. At that point he becomes first citizen of Loonyville.

2012 is definitely going to happen, now.

I would do the same ;) But c'mon he actually deserved it..R.A played very good this season and is still showing his effort to the fans and his team..

PJax = Zen

He knows how to handle the head cases.

very cool of Ron to give back especially in an area he has issues with that carries such a negative stigma. Inspiring even.

Props to Artest for getting his act together and winning the award. Although I am a little upset since Camby was a finalist for the award and didnt win. Damn Lakers! :)

Stern's Laker storyline continues. The bad boy is now the best citizen in the NBA, and all is forgotten by the masses.

Camby had three things against him.

1) He's not a Laker
2) He didn't physically assault an innocent fan in the stands.
3) He's never beaten his wife.

I wonder if Artest's wife thought he was "classy" and a good "citizen" when he pleaded no contest to domestic violence charges in 2007?

Artest is selling his Loomis home after a series of problems there since he joined the Kings in January 2006.

Kimsha Artest told a sheriff's dispatcher on March 5 that her finger was cut and her leg scratched during an altercation with her husband. She said he shoved her to the ground, slapped her and prevented her from making a 911 call.

She also said she broke the windshield of the family's Hummer as Artest tried to drive away from the property, according to a recording of her call released by the sheriff's department.

Sheriff's deputies previously had been summoned to at least two other domestic disturbances at Artest's home, among the five times they responded to 911 calls there since last August.
Animal services officers seized Artest's Great Dane, named Socks, in February after weeks of complaints from neighbors that the dog appeared to be starving.

Congratulations, Ron. Pretty cool when you auction off your only NBA championship ring for a good cause. Classy guy.

Artest deserves his citizenship award. Mental health remains a big taboo in both our own society and around the world. For him as a professional athlete and public figure to openly speak about his own issues in addition to raising awareness and funds for such a cause is an admirable act.

Yes. Let's excuse his beating of an innocent fan, his repeated beatings of his wife, and his aggression oncourt because you think he has a mental health issue!

This is the Shining Star of the NBA!

That isn't what I said at all. For someone who often cries foul on such actions, it is curious you would use it.

The best thing about that vid of Artest clothes-lining Barea, aside from the fact he got suspended, and, well, clothes-lined Barea, is that it appears he injured Kome in the process. It keeps getting better.
