The thread about Mark Cuban proposing a deeper 3 got me to thinking about rule changes I would like to see.

For me, the thing I really hate is at the end of a game when a team is down by, say, 6 or so with a minute or two to go. What happens? The game slows to a crawl as the losing team fouls every time down, hoping the other team will miss a free throw. I don't think I have actually ever seen it work, but it happens like clockwork. What a bore.

I would love to see a new line, beyond the 3-point line. A 4-point line. Watching teams shoot from there would be a blast, and actually give them a chance to catch up.

Thoughts? What changes would you like to see?

The team finishing with the worst record gets the 1st pick in the draft but they have to play in the d-league the next season.

I would like to see consistent refereeing. I'm tired of seeing someone like Harden game the system. I want something that hurts in real time. Fining someone for flopping does nothing. The amount of money that Harden will get for leading the league in FTA and FTM far surpasses anything that the league is going to fine him.

The hurt needs to come in points. The hurt needs to come in losses. In hockey they pull a man off the floor and his team has to play short handed. I think the NBA should have a flop counter, similar to team fouls, and once you reach 5 for the half you have to play 2 minutes with only 4 guys. The flops are assessed by the review crew back in Secaucus.

I also would like to see something similar to what the NFL does with challenge flags. If there's an egregious mistake by the refs, and I'm talking any mistake IE ball out of bounds, offensive foul, flop, whatever. The coach can challenge the call. If they're wrong, they lose a timeout. They can only challenge a finite number of calls though.

I say get rid of fouling out. No one really wants to see the superstar foul out, and hopefully it gets rid of superstar treatment. Instead, every foul by player after 6 gets an extra FT.
I like this a lot.

Everyone knows the refs won't call the game fair.

And back to the subject: Everyone knows the refs won't foul out the star players because "the fans don't come to watch the stars sit on the bench".

I would love it if they'd take away one more reason to give the annointed ones preferential treatment. Call a foul a foul, and let's get on with it.

And yeah, if a player accumulates more than say, five or six fouls, give extra free throws.

That seems like a good idea. Then maybe they would actually call fouls on the superstars instead of letting them get away with stuff they call on younger players/rookies all the time.

I really like the idea of a 4 point line. It would add excitement to the end of games, when a team is down by more than 3 points, because they might have a greater chance of actually coming back.

Regarding a four-point line, I wouldn't want an added line (too many lines might start looking a little silly), but maybe with the three-pointer becoming so much more emphasized and so many more players shooting it well, it might make sense to just push the three-point line back and make it worth four.

This would have, perhaps, an added benefit of opening the court up more. People have over the years suggested making the court longer and/or wider to account for basketball players being longer and more athletic overall, but just forcing defenses to defend more of the court might be sufficient. A deeper 3/4-point line would stretch the court more. The court would have to widened a bit, though, I guess, otherwise there wouldn't be room for "corner fours"...so this isn't as clean as I thought when I first started typing the post.

I love the idea of no fouling out; I'd also start giving the extra FT when players get their fifth foul. I'd couple that with getting rid of the team foul penalty. That should change end of game situations!

I wish I could ban SlyPokerdog.

Er, I mean...T's given out for obvious flops. Actually, just T's given out to Chris Paul and James Harden until they stop flopping.

Hefty fines for show boating, it has no place in basketball.

...without resorting to a foul-a-thon.

I like the challenge idea; can't believe I've never heard it before.

If there is a 4 point line it needs to be way the hell back to where its not part of standard offensive sets. They could just say half court shots are 4.

That'll be great when a game is decided by displaying standard human emotion. We should have robots play with zero passion.

Might be a different thread; but I'd like to see changes with the draft order its really stupid how teams can get a bunch of #1 overall picks. Maybe if you're franchise has won the #1 pick it can't get it again for 9 years or something. If the TWolves get Simmons they will be set for a decade and it had nothing to do with good planning just pure ping pong ball luck.

Really should eliminate the balls entirely and have draft position based off both record as they do now but also to a lesser degree time in the lottery so teams don't continue to get top5 picks for repeated tanking '76ers' style.

Also change max contracts so its much higher. Every decent starter gets the max now. It should be higher which would prevent superteams. Franchises could only have 1 max player or if they have 2 only super cheap role players. Its stupid Warriors have cap room for Curry, Klay, Draymond, and can also add a max contract Durant.

I'd like to see an additional Ref on the court, making it four.

Also would like to see offensive players penalized more often for initiating contact that gives them an unfair advantage over the defending player.

A player gets an extra foul before fouling per OT. So if there's one OT, it takes 7 fouls to foul out. If there's 4 OTs it takes 10. However, once fouled out, the player can't return.

Call 3 in the key, traveling, flopping, and carrying. Call those 4 things perfectly and without any rule changes the game would change dramatically
